Hunt is doing commentary for NewsTalk today, he referred to McGoldrick as part of an Irish striking trio for Ipswich - McGoldrick, Sammon, Murphy

McGoldrick takes a decent free-kick:

That was against Blackburn last week.

Very good free kick. Was it a foul in the first place? I'd say the defender was harsh done by.

Ipswich's David McGoldrick and Derby's Cyrus Christie are interested and could be added if paperwork comes through. Christie, a right back, is well regarded.

"He's very strong and he gets forward, a bit like Seamus in that sense although I don't think anyone is like Seamus at the moment," smiled O'Neill.

O'Neill with a brief word on McGoldrick and Christie: http://www.twtd.co.uk/ipswich-town-news/26078/mcgoldrick-could-be-added-to-ireland-squad

[The paperwork] does seem to take an eternity to sort out but I don't think there's any real serious issues outstanding so there is the possibility of those two being available. I've watched David a few times and seen an awful lot of Cyrus, who has been doing exceptionally well.

Fifth (I think?) of the season to put Ipswich 1-0 up in Blackpool.

And "everything we need to know" about McGoldrick: http://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/international-soccer/everything-you-need-to-know-about-ireland-newbies-cyrus-christie-and-david-mcgoldrick-30732828.html

Name: David McGoldrick

Club: Ipswich Town

Age: 26 (Born November 29, 1987)

Weight: 11st 9lb (73.92kg)

Height: 6ft (1.83m)

In 2014, McGoldrick – who is adopted – discovered that he was eligible to play for Ireland after researching his family tree and finding his birth grandmother was born in Ireland.

He turned down an approach from Gordon Strachan to play for Scotland.

The striker has five championship goals to his credit this season, five fewer than Ireland and Ipswich team mate Daryl Murphy.

McGoldrick began his football career as a trainee with Notts County and made his senior debut in 2004.

He was signed by Southampton a year later for an undisclosed fee but his first team opportunities were scarce and he was loaned out to Notts county, Bournemouth and Port Vale before being sold to Nottingham Forest in £1m in 2009.

He joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan in September 2011, and was loaned out to Coventry City in August 2012. After a successful spell at Coventry he was then loaned to Ipswich Town during the 2013 January transfer window with a view to a permanent deal in the summer.

He has formed a very strong partnership with Daryl Murphy with the Tractor Boys.

He was also the subject of a £5m bid from Leicester City during the summer but Ipswich wanted £8m and the deal fell through.

'He turned down an approach from Gordon Strachan to play for Scotland.'

i suppose Strachan's approach did leave him a bit puzzled, "I’m not really worried if you declare for us or not. We’re okay without you".

The Daily Record guy might see it as turning down Scotland in favour of an inferior option, as many footballers do.

McGoldrick says in the interview above there that he's wanted to play for Ireland since he's been a kid, but he says something like, "at the back of all the programmes, I've always had the Irish sign"... Am I picking that up correctly and, if so, what does he mean exactly?

Charlie Darwin

Think he means he always went to the Irish players to sign his programme at games.

Hold on a second. I thought he only discovered that he was eligible for Ireland/had any links to Ireland through his birth mother a year or two ago? I find what he's saying incredibly hard to believe in fairness unless something was lost in translation.

From my understanding, he grew up in an Irish family but, being adopted, didn't think he qualified. He recently looked into his birth parents and found out one of them had Irish nationality.

geysir might know better than me on this score, but I believe - like Cascarino - McGoldrick would have been eligible anyway as he would be eligible through his adoptive parents.

Stuttgart88

Is he not saying he is from an Irish family but did not know he was eligible because of the adoption thing?

You're a tough nut. One Irish grandparent but no faffing about once the call came. Not good enough. Dual Irish / English but unsure. Not good enough. Very obviously 1G Irish but you don't like as a player. No comment when he says how Irish he is. English born but says he only ever wanted to play for Ireland. Sceptical.

White Irish family, black kid. I can understand where he is coming from. Dave Chapelle.

But if he is adopted and its an Irish family surely he could play once he had been legally adopted - assuming they were an Irish family and they had actually passports or could apply for them.

Has anyone any of his programmes available there handy to see if fixer and stutts are right and cd is wrong.

Think he means he always went to the Irish players to sign his programme at games.
He talks in short phrases which may or may not be connected.
"Ive, wanted to be playing for ireland since I was a kid ... on the back of the program.... i've always had the irish sign .... but to actually get the confirmation ... I'm delighted etc"
Means he always had the irish sign, the sign is in the mudra from St Patrick.
it's a calling, a vocation. David had visions of the sign.

Was it sign meaning flag? I'm not even convinced myself. Still, always happy to be shown to be right, especially when it shows CD wrong. :)

My guess is that once legally adopted the adopted parents'lineage can count. In Cas's case there was controversy over the FBR though, if I recall right ( a post from Geysir).

A child that is legally adopted has the exact same rights as a birth child. Just think about it for a minute.

There is no way legally that a child can be treated differently in any shape or form, once legally adopted.

I like his attitude in that video.
Humble and confident and hard-working it seems.
Wish him all the best and welcome him to the fold.

Seems to be in a similar mould to Leon Best (whatever happened to him? He was doing well at Newcastle a while back)

Stuttgart88

Best is at Blackburn I think. Never really liked Best, a schoolmate of Tricky's. He always looked narky at something, as if the world owed him something. He was very unlucky with injury. In a parallel universe he could have 60 caps and 15 or more goals for us.

Fixer82

Is he scoring?

It's close to that, I did a search for the story (http://www.eadt.co.uk/sport/ipswich-town/republic_of_ireland_should_come_calling_for_red_ho t_david_mcgoldrick_so_says_ipswich_town_team_mate_ stephen_hunt_1_3273292)that I had read, from when he first came on our radar.
He told how he got in contact with his birth mother and she told him her father was Irish.

At least some of what you say is true, as far as I know. The McGoldricks also have an Irish connection/heritage, but possibly a bit further back than what would entitle him to play for Ireland. I'm pretty sure the article in which David himself mentioned this is in this thread somewhere.

Edit: And I see geysir has posted a link to it again above. :)

Up into second spot in the Championship, there is a very Irish look about Ipswich
6 Irish taking part, starting with 4 and finishing with 5, both Hunt brother playing
but not at the same time, Noel Hunt getting the winner.

Anyone know of a team in the English leagues fielding more Irish?

Also St Ledger on the bench meaning all the 7 Irish at Ipswich were in the matchday squad.

Oh and I almost forgot, managed by Mick McCarthy!!

Ipswich Town

33 Bialkowski
02 Parr
04 Chambers
05 Smith
03 Mings
08 Skuse
18 Tabb
12 Hunt (Sammon - 76' )
11 Anderson (Hunt - 83' )
10 McGoldrick
09 Murphy

Substitutes

01 Gerken
14 Bajner
16 Hunt
23 Henshall
24 St Ledger
28 Clarke
32 Sammon

Would add that McGoldrick did the work down the right wing and put the ball in which was deflected into the path of Noel
hunt for him to score.

Mick is doing a good job at Ipswich.

Roy Keane should ask him for a job as an assistant.

He would be on a good learning curve and also working with lots of Irish players.

What could possibly go wrong.

Watched the Ipswich game yesterday. He's a talented player but f*** me if he isn't nonchalant. He would want to improve his workrate a bit if he wants to make the step up. Maybe he's still feeling his way back after injury.

Stephen Hunt was a calming influence; Murphy kept himself busy winning headers and bullying defenders, and he carved a few good chances for himself; Sammon had a great chance to score before Noel Hunt's goal but, as usual, took an eternity to pull the trigger and the chance was lost. I'm getting tired of defending him at this stage.
