Keane seems confident about Baines & we've been linked with Bobo Balde. By the sound of things we look certain to get Balde. Plus Evans & Simpson have linked with a loan move back to us. McShane's last medical didn't go so well. A lot of doubt over the transfer now. Wouldn't be surprise if it doesn't happen.

One of the more reliable lads on Readytogo.net reckons they Sunderland went back with a different offer based on appearences after there were questions raised during the medical. They've yet to hear back from WBA!!

Plus Evans [has been] linked with a loan move back to us. McShane's last medical didn't go so well. A lot of doubt over the transfer now. Wouldn't be surprise if it doesn't happen.

Keane asked Ferguson for Evans for another year; Ferguson made it clear he couldn't since MU had plans for Evans. Interestingly, MU having started their Asian game yesterday morning with almost their starting XI, Evans came on as sub some stage during the second half.

As for McShane, I'd agree it doesn't look too good for him at Sunderland, since very soon after the medical, Keane agreed to pay Southampton £3m for Chris Baird, a centre back who can also play right back (or even defensive midfielder).

The fact that he didn't sign him was only due to his being "gazumped" by Lawrie Sanchez at the very last minute, Sanchez having somehow found an extra £1/2 million to add to an earlier (rejected) bid.

In the end, clubs are very reluctant to take a chance on a player about whom there may be a doubt, especially when they're risking a fair bit of money, and insurance may be a problem.

Consequently, it is more common than we might think for players to fail a medical. Often the selling club tries to keep it quiet, so a statement is put out about "failing to agree personal terms" etc, so that the player can be shipped out elsewhere.

In any case, if the buying club is being too cautious, it is open to the player concerned to prove them wrong by playing 40-odd games the following season, without a problem. If that's the case with McShane, and he's the talent people think he is, then his hopes of the Premiership will merely be delayed, not ended.

He failed his first medical & his second wasn't that great either. That's according to ready to go. Anyway, good news from wearside Graham Kavanagh made his comeback & looked sharp.

Not good news for Ireland if we are reduced to selecting this journeyman for our first team.

Good news for Ireland if a journeyman, who's always performed well for us, in a position we're weak, and short numbers in, comes back from injury and is looking good.

Never sure why Kav gets any abuse . Quality player who will play a big part in Sunderlands season and hopefully back for Ireland

Paddy Garcia

Nothing personal against Kav, I'm sure he is a decent guy. But he is far far from quality. If he was he would have had more than one full season in the top league. Half decent cover but nothing more. He is not going to stand up against any reasonable midfield. We will not win against competitive teams if reliant on Kav.

We have been fortunate for 20 odd years in the centre of midfield and I guess Kav is the biggest indicator of the scarcity of quality available.

Hopefully McShane can put fitness doubts behind him and develop his game further in the Prem.Sunderland fans rave about Evans, seems to be an incredible talent.

Kavangh is fine at Championship or League 1 where he has spent most of his career. Good player and leader but he hasn't done much for the Ireland team when it comes down to it. Pity really but I think he is back up and nothing more at this point.

Is this authoritative info or just speculation?

I really hope this move goes through, i think it would really benefit all parties, sunderland, mcshane and ireland

What do you reckon lads, did West Brom hold up the move until they signed Paul's replacement (your man Barnett from Luton??), now is the time maybe??

Barnett's a replacement for Curtis Davies who'll be off for silly money in the next few days. Hope McShane goes for the same daft money as Davies and Kamara (£6m!!! :D )

Carl Hoefkens form Stoke will replace McShane. And there's a Portugeezer left back on trial in case Paul Robinson goes to Wigwam.

That's all your West Brom news for now, you may now carry on over-hyping McShane. ;)

Just saw keano on sky sports news. He said something along the following lines:

'we are in talks with west brom about paul and, although i dont like talking about players that are under contract at different clubs, i would hope a deal will go through in the next two days. Paul is obviously a player i know and he has a good attitude, thats what i want at this football club, but we'll wait and see'

given the failure of his recent moves for nugent, gordon and baines, im hesitant to think this is a done deal until i see him in a sunderland jersey. tis looking good though!

McShane has definitely spoken to Keane. The 2 clubs now have to agree a fee, best of luck Roy.....

Bit of both really. Great potential and will definitely get better with experience. The Baggies fans don't really rate him that highly and I've a feeling that Keane will pay too much for him. So yes, a bit of both. Best of luck to him.

Didn't the supporters rated him high enough to be voted their player of the year? Maybe that doesn't say much but considering they were a top 6 side, nr of games he played and quite a few of them played through injuries it looks to be a favourable award.

West Brom have already signed a replacement of sorts, a young Luton player (player of the year) for £2.5m+
It does look like Sunderland got McShane at bargain price.

Does seem like a very low price for an international defender given the amount of money Keane has been throwing around the place....I wonder if the previous failed fitness test has anything to do with it? Has McShane got a problem that will eventualy affect him in the long-term??

WeAreRovers
27/07/2007, 11:26 AM
Barnett is a replacement for Davies when he goes. Lad from Stoke coming plus signed the Portugese left-back plus there'll be another centre-half I'd imagine. McShane fee could rise to £2.5m with add-ons. All profit for West Brom.

Here's what www.wbaunofficial.com thinks of McShane, very fair assessment I reckon.

"McShane apparently was keen to move once an offer from the Prem came in and I'd say most Albion fans will be sad to see him go. He isn't the most gifted of footballers technically but his workrate and attitude make up for that. He has disadvantages as both a centre half (his height) and as a full back (distribution), but he does give the side what a lot of players never do and that's some balls"

i have to say from the few matches ive seen of him i would have to agree with that, he is nothing like mcgrath when it comes to reading a game, but has some determination to get across and get in a tackle, which somewhat makes up for it, and makes it harder to spot is lack of perception/reading of a game etc.

We are Rovers: That assessment of McShane is from a survey of one - not the general consensus of all baggies fans and even at that, I for one would never take footballing advice from a bloke called Sid.

McShane was voted fans player of the year and did so well alonside Kiely that the albion fans all wore green for one match as a tribute.

Slightly worried about the low fee - it has long term injury risk written all over it. Especially worrying , as McShane has been a breath of fresh air for us recently and it could be argued that Keano put club before country. Hope to God he doesn't try to persuade McShane to limit his international campaign at expense of Sund-Ireland. I don't care how many Oirish connections they have - I hope that McShane agrees that the green jersey comes before anything - even his long term career.

I used the quote as it was there and it's a fair summary of any Baggies I know. West Brom fans are a contrary lot which is why McShane won POTY ahead of 23 goal Kamara and Championship POTY Koumas - not that I disagree about those two.

Point being that McShane is a) limited b) injury prone and c) signed because of his nationality. That said, he has bags of potential and a good manager.

Personality wise i see a lot of Roy Keane in McShane. Plus wasnt McShane the first first person to hand a transfer request in to Alex Ferguson since Kanchelskis did so some 10 years earlier, that takes balls. I wish him all the best and i really feel he will take to Premiership well

WAR, you had stated that WB fans don't rate him that highly. Now you say that because they are a contrary lot is the reason why he is POTY.
Football supporters are a contrary lot, full stop.
It is considerably more likely that McShane got the most votes from the fans who watched him game in game out, because in their mind he was the POTY on merit.

I can't agree with that. It's McShane's reading of the game that I'm most impressed with. For a 21 year old he plays like he has years of experience. He reminds me of Cannavaro in every aspect of the game, although he's obviously not at his level.

Saw McShane in training in Malahide yday and the lad takes no prisoners even in training. Stern John knocked him over early on in game and Mc Shane preceded to clatter through John and the ball on about 4 occasions .. Stern John was disgusted but he better get used to the lad... On another note Kavanagh sadly has been allowed to talk to other clubs.. Would have been good experienced player in the prem and we have very lightweight centre midfield at the mo.

With Barnett moving on from Luton, it could mean O'Cearuill gets a contract there, he's been on trial there and played against Dagenham during the week.

True - but if he's worth £9m you'd think some proper big clubs would be interested in him. (No disrespect to all the nouveau Irish bandwagonjumpers who now follow Sunderland).
