Would disagree having seen him play every game he played for Rovers. He was probably our best player for a while there and we were the best team in the league. His worst performances came after the deal was done which coincided with Europe and our half our team being crocked as well so wouldn't judge him much on those. Not saying he's a guaranteed Celtic starter but he's above LoI level.
Have a Celtic season ticket holder friend who rates him and thinks he just needs to learn positional discipline in somewhat of a strange system. That's what I've seen. Caught out here and there but physically up to it and calm on the ball.
A bit early to be writing a fella off and anyway there are plenty that did not make it at Celtic for what-ever reason and went on to have good careers elsewhere.

I don't watch every game so that's interesting to hear. Reports seem to have been positive outside of last night. Sutton raves about him everytime I watch.....not saying Sutton is a reliable judge now! But generally the reporting has been favourable.
Last games he played were in the cup no? Did well in both and was named in the SPFL team of the week after Alloa. Are you talking about SPL games only? Hard to judge any player when the entire team falls apart over two legs as Celtic did against Bodo.
From what I've seen he's done well but probably isn't ready to step up to Celtics important games yet. Plenty of time for him to do so.
He was poor against Dundee United in the league and hooked at half time. Poor against Bodo. He's put in some passable performances against Alloa and Raith in the cup but as someone who watches Celtic every week he's not at the level to improve Celtic and push them forward and they'll need to go and sign an LB in the summer as it's a clear weak link in the team. As a UCD supporter I'd love to see him make the grade but given his age and what he has demonstrated thus far it's looking increasingly unlikely.

Again as someone who watches Celtic every week I agree with all of this. Scales has seen more first team action than I would have envisaged but it is highly unlikely to see him make any significant impact at Celtic, and it should be said, he plays in Celtics weakest position and one in which the first choice player was out for several weeks injured. Scales got a few games but often a RB was moved across instead.
I’ve also just finished watching the Hibs game and again it showed Greg Taylor is also not good enough and it is the first position I expect to see Celtic make a significant signing for in the summer which would push Scales further down the pecking order and make it tricky to see where games come for him next year. He could be moved on himself.
This is not to be critical though his involvement to date is a fair bit more than I would have expected after he signed and he could be kept as cover for the backline.

I think he is good, but rotation is not good for defenders. For me I want him to start on the left side of a back 3 . he can cross the ball too.

Didn’t Luca Connell play LB at some point at Bolton? Just thought I’d throw that in as he is still at Celtic, nominally at least.

Linked with a move to Aberdeen. Seems to have no future at Celtic unfortunately

no surprise, miles off the level celtic want/need. at least he'll have a better chance of minutes if he moves.

Yes needs to move and find his level. It can’t be said that he didn’t get his chance at Celtic. He just doesn’t seem to be good enough at that level

I knew this move wouldn't work out couldn't understand what celtic saw in him around the games before the move. He was very poor in Europe at a level lower than celtic

Who’s the last Irish player to do well at Celtic? McGeady?
Eirambler

I don't think it's a huge stretch to suggest that the move may have been more to do with a bit of financial redistribution between two clubs owned by the same man than anything else.

McGeady was the last Irish player to really star there I'd say.
Although you'd forget that Stokes played nearly 200 games for Celtic after McGeady left and scored a lot of goals too. The SPL seemed to suit him but he couldn't step up to a higher level.
Jonny Hayes had a few decent years at the club more recently, but he was more of a regularly used squad player.

Forgot about Stokes, always remember him at Hibs because of that cup final!

Just looking at Stokes record there, he had over 150 goal contributions in 209 Scottish Premiership appearances for his various clubs (Celtic, Hibs and Falkirk). He was incredibly successful at that level, just was never able to step up to a better league or to international football.

Desmond won't mind too much as it provided some nice funds for his other club. Hopefully a move to Aberdeen happens and can help him kick start his career under Goodwin. They've got interest in Jamie McGrath too who definitely needs to kick start his career to get his Ireland place back and Connor Ronan. Though some talk that he'll likely be signing for Hearts if he's going back to Scotland next season.

Reports saying they are looking to use him as a left centre half in a 3. Seems better suited to that than left wingback I think

Playing him left centre back makes sense I think. Although if he's going to progress as a centre back, even a left footed one, that will pretty much mean the end of his international hopes I think. There's just too many better options at centre back. It's left wing back where we needed someone like him to come good.

agree with that. lets see how he does. hopefully able to eek out a career with a 'best of the rest' club in spl. i never fancied him lwb with rovers tbh was surprised at how well he did. lcb should suit him better imo. he is a good footballer, a bit too good for loi i think but just not at the level of a celtic/rangers player.

Playing well so far for Aberdeen. Haven't been watching but scanned their forum and they seem very happy with him even if they generally don't like taking loans from Celtic. There was a lot of negativity around him (or the idea of a loan moreso) but he looks to have won them over on the field. Seems to be playing mainly as a left sided centre half but also had a game at left back I think. "Effortlessly solid" "just a really good defender" "sign him up" etc.

Had to go 9 pages back to find this thread. Passed James McCarthy, Darragh Burns and a few players I've never heard of to get here!
For a lad who is still in and around squads Scales obviously hasn't captured the foot.ie imagination but he's back playing well for Aberdeen who are on a bit of a roll.
Looks like he's lining out as the left sided centre back for the most part.

Why didn't you use the search option? Click "Advanced Search" -> "Search Single Content Type" -> Enter "Scales" as the keyword, then click "Search Entire Post" and change it to "Search Title Only"
You can change the "Show Results As" option to Threads as well, but it's not necessary.

"At some point in recent weeks Liam Scales must have jumped through one of those portals you see in Marvel movies and entered the multiverse of footballing madness.
The haunted Aberdeen defender of before has been left behind amid the smouldering embers of all those losses under Jim Goodwin - the 4-0 at Tannadice, the 5-0 at Hearts, the 6-0 at Hibernian and the catastrophe that was Darvel, a loss that only feels like it happened in another lifetime.
Scales played in all of those. He bore the scars. He got sent off at 4-0 at Easter Road and as he made his way off he would have given Goodwin and owner Dave Cormack an almighty run for their money as the nation's most miserable man. He could not have looked more at sea had he hired a boat and sailed off into the distance, back to his homeland on Ireland's south-east coast.
That was then. This is now. The Scales we see now, alongside Angus MacDonald and Mattie Pollock, is a different person; utterly comfortable in a reconstituted defensive line that has not conceded a goal in an age, a trio that had the presence of nightclub doormen turning away Rangers players at every turn with a 'not tonight lads' vibe."

Played the second half of Celtic's 1-0 win over Osaka in Japan today (as did Lawal and Vata)
Though Celtic linked with a defender from Legia Warsaw, which would be bad news. Still not yet clear what his role for the coming season is likely to be

tetsujin1979

He's still at Celtic, if that's what you mean. Rodgers was asked about him recently
https://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/brendan-rodgers-gives-clean-slate-to-irish-bhoys-ahead-of-celtic-return/a860200931.html
Former Ireland man McCarthy (32) has not played for Celtic since October and made just one league appearance last term but has two years left on his Parkhead contract. He has been linked with a summer move to the MLS as he had appeared to have played his last game for Celtic in a dismal spell there, but Rodgers says he will assess the former Everton man.
“I’ve known since he was a young player at Hamilton. At this moment I’m assessing the squad to see where they all fit, and where it’s at. I’m taking the chance to see the squad up close,” he said.

How is McCarthy still only 32?! It feels like he should be 36 or 37 somehow.
Looking at his stats, he was pretty much done as a top level footballer by 29. Had an odd career, over 250 Premier League appearances yet it doesn't feel like he ever really established himself as a standout player at that level or for his country. He's as well to just sit out his last two years at Celtic now and call it a day after that. Beyond belief that they gave him that contract.
Trequartista20
13/08/2023, 8:13 PM
Similar to Harry Arter, really. Given an insanely long and lucrative contract in spite of their limitations and highly questionable fitness history.
It wouldn't sit easily with me, but I suppose they're perfectly within their rights to continue to swing the lead and pick up the pay-cheque, despite doing absolutely nothing to deserve the money.
More fool those who gave them the deal in the first place, I guess.
I hope he buys his agent a good Christmas gift each year because only God knows how he got him that four year contract.
