Cork City even had a white away shirt with black shorts in 2000/2001. Disgraceful carry on.

I can imagine the board meeting now "right lads we need to close the gap on Dundalk, any ideas?". "We need to match their playing style, get the ball down and maximise the quality we have". Everyone looks over at Caulfield having an argument with a chair..... "Black and white jersey anyone?"

"Let's start a Kenny for Ireland campaign. Be subtle though, get Pats to post it online for us."

Nice away kit, but the photo would have looked so much better if they had waited for a clear blue sky in the background.

So after Cork City release an away kit in the Dundalk colours, Derry City have launched a Drogheda style kit...
It seems the LOI has run out of colours.

In fairness, for a small league we cover a broad base of colours.
Of the 92 senior clubs in England - only 2 play in green and white hoops, and none I can think of play in the blue and black stripes of Athlone. Pats have played away in the Barcelona stripes for a while now, which is a not very common colour combination either. black and red stripes aren't that common as well - yet we've got 2 clubs playing in them.
What colours do we realistically not have much - yellow/gold (e.g. Watford) ? Kilkenny City covered that base until they dropped out.

Is there much 'history' behind the choice of colours at clubs? Dundalk's original GNR colours were the colours of the GNR crest, corporate colours so to speak. When we played in white top and blue shorts ive no idea why but the black/white and often with a red trim would be the colours of the town crest.

Drums were blue and yellow, Thurles Town too?

UCD's jersey is usually St Patrick's blue. It and saffron are the college colours. Presume that's related to UCD originally being the Catholic University

I heard locally that we are changing our home kit again but keeping our away kit. We are rapidly turning into Liverpool with the amount of home jersey changes. The last time we kept the home kit the same was in 15. It wont be the first time either as from 1999-00 to 2002/03 we did the same.

Derry played in that Drogheda coloured one first, but I don't know why.
Then moved to the Wolves colours, then Sheffield United. Both because a manager brought them over with him.
Happily the Sheffield United also matched the county colours.

Love the away kit actually except for the tartan part of it which you can't really see from a distance.

one of the non league sides at conference level is wearing that exact away jersey that we have! I have being trying to get my hands on that away jersey since last season as unsurprisingly it sold out quickly!

Remember hearing that when Longford were starting out they sought help from other clubs and Bohs sent them a set of jerseys (red and black) and that they retained the colours to this day. Longford county colours are blue and yellow and are reflected in the away gear if I recall correctly ?

That’s correct on the home kit. As for the away kit we only adopted the county colors during Stephen Kenny’s reign he wanted to create a closer link with the rest of the county. It worked too. These days we wear just yellow, been a good few years since it was blue and yellow.

it must be 2005 since we had our away jersey in those colours! we had a dark away jersey in 2015 but it was a dark blue with red and black trim in the middle but that doesnt count!

What's all this "county colours" nonsense? More accurately, these are the county GAA colours that are being spoken of.

Its pretty obvious that it would be to try and connect with a broader community. Might grab some limited attention in more rural areas or counties especially where there is just the one club and carries the same name as the county eg Longford. Kilkenny City, Kildare County, Dublin City, Monaghan United were all roaring successes and dabbled in cross code colours marketing. Galway United play in the maroon of the county GAA colours, Waterford in Blue and White, Thurles Town were blue and gold. Maybe O'Neills talked clubs in to it back in the day when designs never mind colours were similar.
Didnt Tom Coghlan fly the idea of Cork City changing their main colours to red and white? If Dundalk tried it we'd be in red and white also!! An Offaly club would have an interesting kit.

Limerick wore red and white Stripes originally until Waterford went bust and they bought their kits. Limerick used to wear red and white striped away kits although recent years has seen us wear green 🙄

No. But we did wear red as the main colour back in the Dave Barry stint. Wasn't popular and we reverted quickly enough.

I like the Pats kit, massive improvement on that dreadful blue yoke of the last couple of seasons that was near identical to certain Limerick and Waterford ones.
They can absolutely g'way looking for 65 quid for it though.

It looks like they are from the same supplier as Hummel and some others.
Galway United had some custom kits for the past few season, but as with Bohs it looks like there was a much longer delay in getting them delivered. We seem to have gone with a generic maroon kit and a yellow away one, which I think may be a first for us.

Yeah, I think it looks nice. Simple and unfussy. Sticking to the red and white for the away kit. Is a good idea I think.

Like that new pats strip if I was a supporter I'd def buy it. 65 quid is alright IMO . Loi clubs struggle with minimum orders, we should all support our clubs by buying the kit and promoting the club by wearing it, IF u can afford it.

Depends on the deal.
Premier league clubs are sponsored by manufacturers in that the likes of Nike, Adidas play the clubs a set amount per year for the rights to make their kit then they get the actual proceeds from sales and not the clubs.
Then there's the possibility that clubs have a deal either with a supplier or a third party so that they buy kit at x quid per item and sell for y to make profit.
I'm not privy to the exact nature of deals clubs get here but I'd doubt brands are lining up to get to buy the rights from the likes of Longford, no offence, to produce their kit so it's likely that smaller clubs for sure and maybe even the bigger clubs unless they're with a local or small supplier use the latter method or something similar.

Can't think how, when or why that could possibly have happened. Unless they get arsey about very vocal criticism of the FAI's Supreme Leader?

Hadn't seen that before. An interesting read. I hadn't thought about the fact that junior clubs with a broad spread of age ranges would buy more kit than a lot of LOI clubs.
I'd put the list of clubs that could guarantee to sell over 150 shirts to their supporters every season as currently being : Cork, Dundalk, Bohs, Rovers and Derry. Waterford might be in there now too. Pats and Sligo could do it in a decent year, and Harps potentially in a very good season (?) - but I doubt any of them could be sure of selling that many year-in year-out. And I wonder if Dundalk would shift those sorts of numbers annually if they slipped down the table and stayed there ?
Hard to see anyone in the current First Division selling 150 shirts consistently to their supporters on an annual basis (?)

Harps find it very hard to keep any significant stock of jerseys in the club shop. Last couple of seasons in particular has seen huge sales in the club shop.
I think there was a figure of €12,000 made in profit by the club shop for last season alone.

I wouldnt be surprised if Cabo have one of the biggest profits on jerseys in the league, they have something like 60 teams and over 1000 shirt sales there before they start to kit out the LOI team.

think Bohs work on about 150-200 shirts likely to sell annually. We usually do a bit better than that but depends on style etc. Ironically our, ahem, revised away shirt for 2019 has sold 1000 so far and they are many waiting (we stopped taking orders until January). It would appear, where shirts are involved there is no such thing as bad publicity (or awful taste in style !)

Sligo Rovers have a promotion where every kid in the Super Reds (the u12 supporters club) gets a free jersey when they sign up. It's usually about 250 to 300 kids that sign up every season and costs only €50 (it used to be only €35). They will get a season ticket, free jersey and a coaching session with the players. It really is massive value and promoting the u12 Super Reds is something the club do really well. In the past the kids have gotten a free jersey like this season and one year the club gave away 300 free season tickets for the u12s. Get them at that age and you will have them for life ... hopefully.
