I'm not so sure. They'd probably come out of the woodwork for a home cup final. Plus, you probably see relatively good interest from Cork City fans too who would see it as a chance to take in a final on their door step with good transport links to Cobh.

All true, but also all relative.

What is Cobh's record attendance for any fixture over the last decade or so ? Even if they were to beat that with a home LC Final, it would still most probably be less than the likely turnout at the Brandywell.

Cobh have had a few 5,000+ crowds over the years when as a Munster Senior League team for Intermediate Cup Finals and home FAI Cup games. I remember a home FAI Cup Quarter Final win over Dundalk with an estimated 6,000+ all ticket game and some National Newspaper journalist staking to eat his hat if Cobh won to get to this round.
I believe he was paraded on to the pitch at half time, where he ate a cake that looked like his hat, some sort of charity event he supported.

Maybe some of the soccer historians may have better detail!

In 1983, Cobh Ramblers as a Munster Senior League side met Sligo Rovers in the semi-final that year and captured the imagination of the Irish footballing public, drawing crowds of over 20,000 to Flower Lodge, Cork for the home games as St Colmans Park was too small. There were 3 replays until Sligo finally won 3–2 and went on to win the Cup.

I think it was 4,200 for a premier Division game with Cork city in or around march 2008, don't think you'd be allowed fit that amount in nowadays though.

Hi all,

Anyone with attendance for the FAI Cup games over the weekend,

Bray v Finn Harps 410
Dundalk v Cobh 2214
Inchicore v St.Pats 1000
Home Farm v Cork City 600
Drogheda 1 Shamrocks 0 1000
UCD V Pike Rovers 150

If you were at one of the games maybe you could give an estimate!

Thanks in advance

I don't think one-off examples of games from 1983 - when Cobh weren't even in the league, so there was huge novelty around it all - is relevant to the club's crowd potential in 2018. If it was, Cobh wouldn't have had to drop out of the league in recent years. That's why I asked over the last decade, as it feels a more realistic time scale. Otherwise you could use the fact Derry were drawing crowds of 10,000 to the Brandywell for every match in the late 80s to argue they would do the same now (they won't).

Apart from that famous Cobh cup run from over a generation ago, were any of those other fixtures you mentioned in recent times ?

Worth noting there was no Cork team at all in the league in 1983, so I wonder did Cobh's Cup run become a de facto Cork City/United/Hibs/whatever cup run?

The town would have really come out for a final in Cobh.... Lots of people from the city mixed in and you would have 3k.

What does the Brandywell hold? Would imagine away club would get a fair share but not sure how many will make the trip.

It's got 3,900 odd seats, though I don't know what the official capacity is. There's certainly an area for standing, and people go there, but they don't sell tickets for that area.

I remember in 07 when cobh won the league in Athlone hundreds of Cobh fans travelled up. I would be confident in a lot of them attending it in the Brandywell maybe not with these numbers.

Fair enough, you would imagine Derry would get a handy crowd but hardly be a sell out?

Was about 500 estimated to Athlone, things have changed at the club since then but still should have a handy contingent.

I think you're on the wrong thread, but Maynooth v Leeds attendance was about 80 (no charge).

Looks like this game will be close to a sell out. Mark Farren stand is already sold out and tickets are flying out for the Southend stand.

This is a really good interview with Cobh Ramblers captain Shane O'Connor.

Derry would need to be wary playing against someone/a team with a lot to prove to themselves.

That's a great piece. Very open about his difficulties. Football is a fickle business.

Match looking like it'll be a sellout, which is great to see. No online tickets left.

Cobh have sold 250 odd, we hear. Cracking number considering the distance and the fact that that's higher than their average attendance this season.

I think the 4pm ko put a good few more off, still that many on a Sunday afternoon to travel to the other side of the country is not bad at all. Looking forward to it.

Agreed. Though it's an ideal time for Derry people, I think it should have been on earlier, or even played tonight.

Would be very difficult - if not impossible - to have played it tonight, given Institute had a fixture there this afternoon.

Any links to the game aside from watching it on TV with Eir Sport 1? All the usual online suspects seem to show a blank for this fixture.

Give up. It is nonexistent as a link on all streaming sites. All of them. Radio Foyle has good coverage. Better than nothing. 1-1 close to half time now

Thought Cobh gave a good account of themselves, just ran out of steam and Derry did enough, didn't look great though. Decent auld final, just a shame it wasn't in Cobh as would have done a lot for the club and the town if it was.

Also whats the story with the new Brandywell not having a press box? Saw a few of the journos on twitter saying it and sat in the stand hotspotting off their phones to do up match reports etc! Mad considering the place is only rebuilt!

Thought Derry were fairly poor, just had more fire power when needed. Won’t beat Bohs or Dundalk playing like that. Did anyone else think the bounce of the ball was ridiculously high at times?

Comic Book Guy

Glad someone else saw that, it looked to me that both teams struggled to cope with the bounce, not using that as an excuse though, congrats to Derry.

The pitch did not appear to play as well as earlier in the season. Have they added more rubber infill?

I look forward to Brian Kerr's opinion during the next televised game on RTE.

Kenny Shiels spoke out about the pitch today said it wasn’t watered and that it made the ball stick and slow down his teams style of play

I was going to say that it was more likely not to have been watered enough rather than additional infill so soon after installation. Strange that it wasnt considering that Derry were hosting the match albeit under the FAI. Can one side or the other request a pitch not to be watered in a 'neutral' game? Surely Derry could have done what suits them best. Kerr's bleating on the Derry pitch started when commentating on a Dundalk game and he was moaning about the artificial surface being installed so he'd have had a field day if ye pardon the pun. It played a lot better than the previous Oriel pitch even when it was new. They were both the same pitch but installed by different contractors which obviously made a difference.
