‪Ireland will qualify tonight. Here’s why; we qualified for our first World Cup in 1990. Then we qualified 4 years later in ‘94. Then we had to wait double that time and qualified 8 years later in ‘02. Now it’ll be 16 years since the last one. Unfortunately the next time we qualify will be in 32 years’ time

but we don't have to lose, to not go through.

And that's currently what? we played iran away 2nd leg, lost to them, still went through. We lost to Belgium away and drew with Turkey but still went out.
That leaves bosnia and Estonia, where we had scored away and subsequently went through.

But its not wholly only on away games first. as pointed out by iran games. So its just a pointless stat, like many other stats :)
That totally fckd up, perhaps you don't understand the difference between a tie and a leg.

The stat is, we have not lost a play off tie when playing the 2nd leg at home

According to Danish TV, they're making two changes tonight.
Christensen in for Ankersen & Poulsen for Jorgensen.

Think O'Neill will play for penalties. They score in the 70th minute and we push everyone up, including McShane and a late Doherty call-up. Get an equaliser and we go out on away goals. A glorious Irish result.

Not had much of a chance to post over the past few days but I envisage us keeping it very tight again tonight. I don't see us ever really going for it unless they score, as O'Neill will see it as too risky. O'Neill will happily take it to penalties.

I'd be surprised if Wes makes an appearance at all whilst the score is still 0-0 or if we somehow manage to get a goal. It will be utterly nerve-wracking, even if we go 1-0 up, given the fact an away goal for them would effectively put them ahead.

I'm both relishing and dreading the next few hours simultaneously, if that's even possible. I suppose that seeming contradiction sums up being an Ireland supporter!

Anyway, this it it. COYBIG!

Meyler in for O'Dowda is the only change, as expected. Murphy given the nod up front again.

It's going to come down to who has more energy. Nervous that the Danes are going to get one early.

Been there, done it. Got the shirt!

I’d love us to win, but it’s a poor team and squad.

We just defended over there, if we come out and play they will pick us off and expose our poor defence!

I’d have Long in for Murphy. Would’ve liked Hoolahan to start but need him to come on not too late at least. O’Neill possibly retiring him tonight

Not a great team at all is it? Trying to get into Martin's head, which isn't easy at the best of times, it looks like he's going to hoof it long to Murphy for the first half and hope the game is scoreless at the break. Then, one would hope, he'll spring Hoolahan, O'dowda, and Long for the second 45. That's the only thing that would make sense to me

Keep it tight for 60mins, then enter Wes & Long to send us to Russia.

What is the problem with scoring first and having Denmark have to adjust...feel like the whole "Wes will score in the 88th minute and we win 1-0" thing is playing with FIRE. Big time fire lads. Which ever version you like, Springsteen or the Pointer Sisters.

Horrible feeling it’s going to be glorious failure. We score in the first 10mins and concede an injury time away goal. 80 odd mins of torturous hope then pain. It’s the Irish way.

Holohan, oDowda and Long off the bench if chasing it.

Whelan and the two Longs if we’re defending a lead.

There's no way Wes will come on if it's still 0-0 after 60 minutes. In fact, I can envisage us getting more compact and primitive the closer we get to 90 minutes. O'Neill will see it as too risky throwing on creative players late on when a goal for Denmark would all but kill us off.

KrisLetang
14/11/2017, 6:34 PM
How could we possibly get MORE primitive?

Would agree, but for the fact that Denmark will overrun us in ET. Think we win this in 90 or don't win it at all, and i think MON and Keane know that.

Dam so disappointed the scored before I could get a bet on lol.. maybe it was better I didn't knowing my luck.

But a long was to go... don't think we can defend so early, more of the same is best plan.

Oh what a poxy goal to concede. Christie at fault again.

And Christie’s poor game compounded with the O.G. On the plus side we’re creating chances too.

The second the ball was switched across to Ward, I knew it was only going back towards our goal. Hardest task of MON's tenure now.

Time and again, Christie is being caught out of position.

Christie needs to come off, Hoolahan on, Meyler to right back for the second half.

Ward had a complete mare there but Brady’s pass was short.

The curse of the early goal

NeverFeltBetter
14/11/2017, 7:32 PM
Denmark happy to sit back a bit, wait to hit us on the counter. Players sniping at each other, crowd falling out of it...

What does MON say in the dressing room? Hoolohan, Long on of course, but how do you turn this around mentally?

osarusan
14/11/2017, 7:34 PM
Christie is having an awful game. He has no attacking or positional sense at all.

Now that we are chasing it, we'll probably see Hoolahan and Long sooner rather than later, but we are not a team that is good at chasing a game.

If anything, the early goal forced the Danes to get off the pot, compared to 0-0.

NeverFeltBetter
14/11/2017, 7:36 PM
Do want to say, spectacular finish from Erikson. A lot of other players would sky it, or hesitate and take a touch. But he placed it perfectly first time.

Very very attacking subs

This could end 3 or 4-1 as easily as 2-2 and a grandstand finish
