A lot of comments about Towell (and not just here) focus exclusively on getting in the Ireland team.. but I would be amazed if better money and prospects weren't a huge part of the move.

Towell's main motivations for moving
1) money
2) better standard of football/training
3) prove himself after problems in Scotland
4) wants to have better platform to impress Ireland manager
I'd say it's that order too.

If Dundalk offered more money than Brighton I'm sure he still would have went across.

You swear he was trying to further his career or something crazy like that.

And would thus become the first footballer in history, to play for less money then he could possibility have earned.

Yeah. you're probably right. Let no one think that we can compete financially though so its not like tht was an option for him

I don't think anyone has said anything contrary to that?

It is disappointing that a player of Richie's talent and dedication is forced to play for an English club in order to have any chance of playing for Ireland.
Even if he became the outstanding player in the Championship with 15 goals from January and was a Premier players by Euro 16, I still feel he would miss out - settled squad, not enough time to assess him properly, doesnt fit in the system etc rolled out when in fact it would boil down to be that a LoI player has turned out to be good enough for an international call up so soon after a move. Rather than it being used as promotional of LoI in some way any possible call up would cause terror and panic around the corridors of Abbotstown!

Or it could be that he'll go straight into the next squad as has happened previously with players who have gone across the water. What you're describing is probably what should happen but sure ye know yerself!
Are there actually people that believe that there are some in the FAI actively worried that an LOI player might make the Ireland squad? Why?
And it makes perfect sense to me that players in the Championship are ranked ahead of those here. Even if in a full time team here, many opponents they face aren't.

Championship is miles ahead of our level I don't like this rating us to a English division lark anyway there are different dynamics , conditions etc many teams in the English championship would hockey our teams out of it but wouldn't get through several rounds in Europe like our teams have done over the years I don't find the standards that comparable.

Shane Duggan already did it this off-season.

Nesta. Your being a bit silly with your comments here. No matter what happened during any game we've played you in..... I think to a man we have all said that towell is a serious talent. The sad part is dundalk won't receive a cent. Maybe a promise of a friendly.

You are re-writing history a bit there. Quite of number of Cork fans were very dismissive of Towell over the last three years. Whether they really thought it or it was just verbal diarrhoea, I don't know.
The sad part is dundalk won't receive a cent. Maybe a promise of a friendly.
There is nothing we can do about that.
We are currently negotiating a deal with Daryl Horgan. He is in the same position as Towell was last year. He had a really good season but no Championship club have come in with a good offer for him. If one were to sign him they would have to pay Dundalk compensation as he is is 23 (or under).
Like Towell, we will offer him a 2 year deal but if he stays he will insist on it being a one year deal. In that way, if he has another great (or better) season) like Towell, he is free to move without compensation to Dundalk.
Top players in the league want to be out of contract when they hit 24.

As I & many others have said many times "Towell is a fine footballer" but that doesn't mean we have to like him
After all he's damaged us more than once in the past few years.

Pat's announce a few signings.
We have agreed to terms for 2016 with Brendan Clarke, Michael Barker and David Cawley. Brendan has won multiple trophies in his 169 appearances for the club while Michael and David join from Bray Wanderers and Sligo Rovers respectively

If Barker and Cawley are typical of the players St Pats recruit for 2016, a title challenge will certainly not be part of the expectations

Cawley is a good addition to Pats. He won leagues and cups with Sligo when they were good. He's probably a direct replacement for Bolger. One bad season with a club who underachieved greatly shouldn't define him. Barker wouldn't pull up any trees but I doubt he will be any more than backup for Bermingham.

Funny! I couldnt be bothered searching through match night threads to dig up the moaning about Towell falling over all the time, or the perplexed observations of Cork fans as to why when they dont make any challanges (both on the field and in competition in general) albeit tongue in cheek with the tackles not being made the moaning about Towell was far from irony and entirely critical. The subsequent comments were that maybe Cork have to throw off the sportsmanship to succeed...

Cabo have signed two 'keepers, Shane Fagan a quality goalie who was with them last season for one match and picked up an injury that saw him out for the season, and a big 6' 5 goalie from the old Rovers B side Mick Kelly, who in fairness while lacking in many attributes is indeed BIG

Ach its hard to dislike also-rans! But it is always fun to read Cork fans faux outrage at biased refereeing and Dublin media reporting, not to mention all that travelling that is needed on this massive island of ours. Its a pity the Setanta Cup went on a hiatus as Irish League clubs were to be compensated for travel south but LoI clubs' travel north being overlooked, the moaning from the southernmost club would have been epic:P

With Peter Cherrie having signed a 2 year deal? That's already looking like a very solid squad Bray have now for 2016, they look like they will be set up for a very comfortable league season.
