The new season for Irish players based in England and Scotland starts tonight with Aberdeen FC's Irish contingent Willo Flood, Adam Rooney, Jonathan Hayes, Joe Shaughnessy and Danny Rogers taking on FC Daugava Riga in the Europa League First Qualifying Round.
The live blog will be back tonight with the lineups here: http://irish-abroad.appspot.com/Live

Cieron Keane (yep, that's the correct spelling!) has signed for Notts County from Wolves - http://www.nottscountyfc.co.uk/news/article/jeremy-balmy-renews-cieron-keane-signs-up-for-notts-county-1715043.aspx - he played for the U16's a few years ago, but I can't find any mention of him since.
Anyone know if he's still eligible?
Have to imagine if he was with Wolves he'd have been involved more than that?

Two goals for Adam Rooney in that game - worth our while considering him as a back-up striker? He seems to be in a rich vein of form, ever since moving to Aberdeen.

It is Aberdeen, though. They got outplayed by a scratch Pats team a couple of weeks back.

Jutkiewicz has shown interest in playing for us and is now a 25 year old forward about to play in the Premiership. Might be worth looking at him again.

With the standard of players Burnley are signing - Kightly, Reid, Sordell, Matty Taylor, I wouldn't be surprised if they are planning for a quick return to The Championship; even so the signing of Jutkiewicz surprises me.
I would wait until I see him play in the Premiership before making a call on him. I don't think he's the answer to our problems. I have never been impressed with him; he has a goalscoring record of something like in 1 in 7, which is Simon Cox territory. In that case, I would rather have Cox over Jutkiewicz; and though Jutkiewicz's recent form has been impressive enough, if we were calling someone up on goalscoring form, we could call up David McGoldrick or Leon Best.
As I says, until I'm pleasantly surprised, I would have about ten players in front of him.

Good to see a bit of Irish involvement in Blackburn's pre season games. Hopefully, Lenihan, O'Connor and O'Sullivan can make the breakthrough this coming season. Best getting a game too, and was disappointed to find out that O'Connell is English.

Few young irish lads in pre season action:
mclaughlin played left full for forest in their pre season game would be great if he developed in that position
bolger played centre half for bolton
Corry played for shefff wed so hopefully he is back in picture at wenesday after bad last 18 months
O brien has been playing for derby hopefully this is the year he gets a good injury free run to see if he is international potential as it seemed he might be 3 years ago
hoban and murray have been involved for watford

Anthony Forde doesn't appear to have kicked on, does he? It was 2011 that he was making PL appearances under Mick McCarthy. Only made 3 league appearances in 2013/2014- has made none since October 2013.

I was thinking the same thing, mad to think he was starting against Arsenal in the Premier League under McCarthy and not looking too bad. Apparently Wolves are looking to send him out to League Two on loan, but it sounds like that might be the last of him at Wolves: http://www.expressandstar.com/sport/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2014/07/02/wolves-to-run-rule-over-loans-for-zeli-ismail-and-anthony-forde/

was set to go on loan to Hibs last season, before a foot injury cancelled it
supposedly Jackett doesn't like him, or doesn't rate him, and he's signed Tommy Rowe and Rajiv van La Parra (both wingers) already this summer, so that's going to cut his chances of a first team appearance again

Time for a where are they now?
Aaron McCarey- Then: Wolves, Now: Wolves
Matthew Doherty- Then: Wolves, Now: Wolves
Derrick Williams- Aston Villa, Bristol City
John Egan- Sunderland, Gillingham
Anthony O'Connor- Blackburn, Blackburn
Jeff Hendrick- Derby, Derby- Only senior cap in the squad
Samir Carruthers- Aston Villa, Aston Villa
John O'Sullivan- Blackburn, Blackburn
Kevin Knight- Had been released by Leicester, Shamrock Rovers B
Conor Murphy- Bray Wanderers, Shelbourne
Anthony Forde- Wolves, Wolves
Kane Ferdinand- Southend, Peterborough
Eoin Wearen- West Ham, Bohs
Sean Murray- Watford, Watford
Sean McDermott- Arsenal, Sandnes Ulf
Declan Walker- Wrexham, Bangor City
Joe Shaughnessy- Aberdeen, Aberdeen
Connor Smith- Watford, Watford
All very differing circumstances. There are some at the same club and have broken through (Hendrick, Murray, Doherty, Shaughnessy). Those at the same club but still haven't broken through (Smith, Carruthers, Forde, O'Sullivan, O'Connor, McCarey) and those that have moved on to try establish themselves at lesser sides (Egan, Walker, McDermott, Wearen, Knight, Williams). Ferdinand the only player that has moved upwards, but his progress has seemingly stalled having been loaned out by Peterborough during last season.
Hendrick does appear to stand apart from the rest by a combination of having a senior cap and having accumulated more games at club level than the rest (Murray has recovered from a season or two stuck in neutral).

Only thing is, worst case scenario they'll all stay in the Championship. Fingers crossed, though, that Doyle and Hoolahan make a jump to PL level. Both could be integral in the 2016 qualifying campaign on the basis of the system O'Neill appears intent on implementing (Hoolahan seems first choice at 10, Doyle could be a viable option as lone striker).
Hoolahan is the man I'd be most anxious to see get a move to PL level as he might not even feature that regularly if he stays at Norwich in the Championship. It could be possible that his previous suitors (WBA, Villa) are waiting until later in the transfer window to force Norwich's hand, rather than having to pay fees in excess of £1m right now. I'm sure most here would argue his value in excess of this figure and would represent value for two sides who struggled to hold onto the ball last year but we're not paying the money.

Very good move. Did we have any confirmation of his eligibility other than Pádraig Amond's article in the Carlow Nationalist? Amond claimed Hogan had been called up to our under 21 side in the same article and there has been no squad announcement to show same.

It's a pity that a player like Elliott is struggling to find a club. You'd wonder whether a short summer stint in the LoI might have helped him prove his fitness. I imagine his wage demands wouldn't be excessive for putting himself in the shop window, and Pats, Dundalk, Derry and Sligo could have benefitted from someone with his instinct and experience in their European ties.
Some very decent players in Tets list.

Just read about that Robertson chap signing for Hull and stumbled across a piece about a signing made by Dundee United during the summer- former Ireland under 21 player Callum Morris.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/27893153
Morris went off the radar after being released by Newcastle (being released/rejected by non-league sides and signing for the Glenn Hoddle academy) but rebuilt his career in a big way over the past two seasons at Dunfermline Athletic and he's done enough to impress Jack McNamara.

Although born in Birkenhead, Callum represented the Republic of Ireland at U19 and U21 level but any future representative honours will be for Northern Ireland. He explained:-
"My mother is from Liverpool and all her family are from Waterford, my father and his family are from Belfast in Northern Ireland so I got to choose which to play for. I went for the Republic but it turned out when I left Newcastle I was left out of the Republic squad and when Northern Ireland showed an interest I was happy to opt to play for them. That was probably eight or nine months ago but the international clearance only came through a month ago. If I play well you never know. It would be a bonus to play at international level again."

Fair play, well spotted. That's one that went under my radar in terms of switches from FAI to IFA. He's actually jumped from League One to SPL with that move. Spare a thought for poor Liam McAlinden, Alex Bruce, Alex Pearce, Adam Barton, Johnny Gorman, Callum Morris, Carl Magnay and Alan Kernaghan. They don't know whether they are Irish, Northern Irish, Scottish or English. Though their existential crisis about dual-identity invariably comes in handy when they don't get a call up for their first and/or second choice countries.
