On the show, it definitely had worse analysis of games than MNS used to. Only one panelist being asked a question about each game means there's absolutely no debate or discussion about the games.
One positive, if they keep it up, was the man Tony O'Donoghue being at a number of the games to get match day footage. More of that would be good.

That was only ever bluffing anyway. They'd ave 2 panelists who may/may not have been at 2 games total and then they'd analyse a game based on 3 minutes highlights.

It really is going to be a Jack of all Trades show. They'll be hoping to get viewers interested in CL/PL watching the show.
On a side note, do Limerick and Athlone not have Sponsors yet?

The Robbie Fowler segment today was bizarre but I suppose it's what "the fans" want. I suppose we can only hope LOI can benefit by the proximity to the football the public actually cares about.

That show is diabolical. Only around 15mins allocated to the loi and the rest I spent fast forwarding past champions league goals, analysis of a man united game 2 weeks ago, Robbie fowler talking about Liverpool and then the panel talking about their title chances, and that 6 questions thing is ridiculous. Id prefer 60 seconds with Jackie and Thunderstrike anyday. Bring back MNS!!

I learned my lesson. That is the last time, I watch the whole show live.
Next week, I'll record it and fast forward to the 10-15 minutes of LOI coverage.

The Analysis on the Derry City - Cork City game was actually quite impressive. If they could replicate that for the other games they would be onto a winner.

18/03/2014, 8:51 AM
I think the problem with that is there's only 1 game (the live match) with enough cameras at it for that type of analysis.
If you tried that with a single camera view of everything it could look a bit shabby.
Having said that, there won't be a live game every week so I dunno what they'll do then.

Pure rubbish of a show. Why show CL goals from last week & analysis a Man U game from 3 weeks ago. No talk back about the LOI goals only talk about a game that was shown live.
It will be interesting to see the viewing figures for this show as I'm sure they will drop as the weeks go on.

Trying to be all things to all people.
Spot on. That's the crux of it.
The show doesn't satisfy LOI fans because there isn't enough content, yet nor does it satisfy the EPL/CL fans, as the information is outdated and they can get volumes more content elsewhere.
Shame really as if viewership figures drop, the you'd fear it might get the chop and take LOI coverage with it.
Sheridan

Don't get the RTÉ apologetics. Seems to be the worst of both worlds; highlights shunted into a graveyard slot and LOI content watered down. In other words, after five years on the national broadcaster, we're getting a sub-eircom League Weekly product, designed to appeal to a casual, non-LOI fan who has no incentive to tune in at that hour anyway.
Another great shout, Sheridan.
Thanks!

Can't say I'm bothered if the show gets dropped. I'm sure LoI highlights will be available through some platform be it club websites or YouTube.

Thankfully I don't watch this show live.
I just zip through it a few days later to get the League of Ireland stuff.
This show is only useful to a casual viewer with a general interest in Soccer & who may have been on Mars for the week preceding it & missed any Soccer they might be interested in.

I don't know why you'd presume this. Clubs can put highlights on their websites/media channels now and don't. I'd guess maybe half the top divison would

Unless you're a Galway FC fan - manager has banned any game footage from being uploaded by club on to YouTube. Go figure

Haven't heard anything official, but guessing he doesn't want anyone to know our tactics or set-piece moves. Which so far consist of, wait for it, crossing ball into penalty area. Trailblazing stuff

It's a bit odd that RTE are showing Pats v Limerick next weekend, because you'd expect a routine enough win for Pats there.. although you never know.
I'd have thought one of the Rovers/Bohs or Sligo/Dundalk games would be on.

Was it RTE that picked the 3.15 Saturday kick off ? Pat's will lose a lot of gate money on this and no compensation.

Desperate show. Desperately backed up on twitter with "Just to clarify, this is a FOOTBALL show, and we look at football from across Europe and not just in Ireland. #soccerrepublic"
Their shambolic replies to anyone who points out how poor it is on their Twitter page is even more desperate. Wholly unprofessional behaviour. I'd love to know who is behind their twitter page.
As stated in this article;
http://www.rte.ie/presspack/2014/02/26/soccer-republic-the-new-irish-soccer-show-starts-monday-10th-march-on-rte-two/
"Soccer Republic, the new Irish soccer show"
and,
"Soccer Republic will be the place to see all the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division goals every week with the best analysis using the latest technology, on all the major talking points in the League."
I've yet to see any sort of 'best analysis using the latest technology', aside from about twenty seconds on one match.
I kept a close eye on MNS the past few years. I've absolutely zero interest in this feeble attempt at a football show.

I like Jimmy McGees piece on all time loi teams and I think the analysis on the main game is superb. But for the rest of it it is shockin.. I found it hard watchin the rest of the non loi segments and like others will skip through the rest.

I think it was a case of them feeling like they had to show Pats as champions. Cork wouldn't budge for 1st game, UCD aren't going to be shown, so Limerick was next available game
Agree that Sligo/Dundalk and Bohs/Rovers would have more intrigue for most

That's almost certainly true, and I guess when they were scheduling no-one would have suspected that Limerick would look quite this toothless. They may confound that of course.

We don't have a choice in terms of not budging. The club was trying to get confirmation for weeks from the FAI and RTÉ as to whether that game was going to be moved or no so they could go ahead with the billboard campaign.

It's probably going to hit travelling fans as well. We have a train carriage organised to go up but outside of that a lot that would normally drive will just watch it on telly. Bit of novelty in it for Limerick fans to be actually able to sit at home and watch an away match on the box.

Just got around to watching it now. If they are going to add in the champions league and English football that's fine but Jesus the structure is awful. Derry vs Cork, followed by Liverpools chances at the premiership, followed by champions league and then back to LOI. All over the place.
Goal cam is actually pretty good. You could nearly stick a go pro on each goal for all games and clubs could have something similar for their own highlights if they where to do it.

Dont think its that bad, not great either though, enjoy the Jimmy Magee segment, but as mentioned dont know why they had an interview with Robbie Fowler and I fast forward the awful highlights of the CL. Forde was a bit dull too, wonder if Pat Dolan be making an appearance this season.

A few of us have said ex-LoI players playing for Ireland could be used to promote the league. David Forde in fairness was a good guest in that respect. I think they showed action from both halves of all games last night unlike last week? It they did, that's an improvement of sorts. The gap between Derry v Cork and the rest of the LoI action was too long. In the first week all the LoI action was done in the first half hour. Watching Against the Head, they do go a bit all over the place there as well. The gap in the show with no LoI coverage one of the big flaws. Each of the three parts of the show should have some LoI coverage in my opinion.

Just had a gander at their Twitter account after reading this. Someone says "The national broadcaster should be obliged to promote the Irish game." The reply: "you could claim obliged to show but not promote the game, that's a job for the professional organisation and clubs that run it."
I suppose he's right, but something about that answer just seems to speak volumes about how RTE approaches LOI. Just some annoying necessity they have to show, and put a really bare amount of work into in the process.

Not sure about the first part. People involved with Cork reckon they were all set to show the Pats game but weren't getting any reply from RTE or the FAI. I suppose that's not necessarily inconsistent with Stuey's info, but RTE were showing the Under 20s 6 Nations on the Friday night, which would have clashed with the LOI game. RTE head of sport Ryle Nugent is a rugby commentator and fan, so I'd be inclined to think they were the reason for the Sunday kick-off.

I posted a comment on that article that I doubt the FAI wanted the match televised on Sunday and it was down to RTE showing the U20 games. Whoever Stuey Byrne was talking to was spinning him a yarn!

To be fair, I'd say the people Stuey talks to are full of yarns. If the FAI wanted the Rovers game shown, they'd have done it on Friday night. He seems to be working on the assumption the Rovers game could only happen on Sunday, when in fact we had to move the Glentoran game back a week to accommodate TV.

To be clear, I wasn't having a go at Cork for not "budging".

There was a couple of issues at play for Glentoran too. They had an irish cup replay on Monday March 10 and that possibility was known when the TV game was annnounced. Even if the Rovers game wasn't moved to Sunday, the Setanta game was still to be moved to the 17th.
In this case, it worked OK for RTE as they could get a game on the Sunday and the rest of the schedule wasn't inconvenienced too much

I'm surprised he's not on it more.
The panelists have been OK, nothing earth shattering. Brian Kerr is alright, nothing against the guy, but he's a bit bland. Someone like Dolan at least brings personality.
