Coleraine have just become the favourite N.I. Team of many LOI fans.

I don't bet and I don't have a time machine.
If I did and I had would have put money on West Brom and Coleraine tonight.

We have them just where we want them now.
That made me laugh an unreasonable amount.
Watched some of the Pats game and I have to say they played some really tasty football. Richmond will be a nice place for a game when they have a few games behind them. Or when we play ye and we bore the tits of ye.
The (non) penalty decision was shocking. Lovely movement leading to it though. Glens can feel lucky overall to get away with a 0-0.

It was an interesting game in Tallaght last night. Rovers set up with almost a 4-2-4 formation, Chambers and Rice sitting deep in the middle with Finn getting close to Quigley and O'Connor and Sheppard pushed high up the wings. Coleraine were 4-5-1 and content to put 9 men behind the ball for the majority of the game. Rovers dominated possession but rarely broke the well organised Coleraine defensive lines. At times they almost seemed too intent on trying to play one touch balls around the Coleraine area, when it seemed it might have been better to try and take control and beat a man. Quigley in particular looked intent on getting rid of the ball as quickly as possible at all times. After about 35 minutes the effects of pre-season appeared to hit the Rovers players as they dropped the tempo and started to give the ball away more cheaply, Coleraine punished this with a lovely finish from the final kick before the break and the their only chance in the half.
Second half was a similar enough affair, Rovers started to dribble the ball a bit more and the introduction of McCabe for Quigley made them look more dangerous almost immediately. Coleraine also started to look more threatening on the counter attack as Rovers left men forward more often and there were a few more chances at both ends throughout the second half. The closest Rovers came was from a couple of Sean O'Connor free kicks, the first well saved and the second just wide, they never managed to create much in the way of clear chances against a defence that held it's shape extremely well in the face of Rovers often rotating front four. Coleraine actually had the best chance of them all to extend their lead in the last few minutes, when they broke away only for their striker to volley over from about eight yards out.
Rovers will likely face similar blanket defences on a regular basis in Tallaght and they will have to be a bit craftier if they want to break them down. There were flashes of brilliance at times and if they keep faith with that formation and get confidence up Rovers could be very good to watch this season. On the other hand it won't be long until the crowd starts getting restless if the wins are not flowing and Croly will be facing the same problems Kenny had in motivating the team and making them believe in his system.

Thanks. Hard to estimate the crowd in Tallaght with just the one stand open. I'd say 1,200 - 1,500 would be a reasonable guess.

At the lower end of that to be fair. I wasn't expacting that many seeing as its the Setanta, the weather was poxy and Liverpool on Sky.
Poor enough game after a bright opening. Very heavy pitch didn't help. Showed how badly we rely on fagan too

Watched a bit of the Pats v Glentoran game on telly. Pats have a decent squad and Russell and Fagan should improve them next day. If there was 200 visiting fans there the home support was very poor even if Liverpool were on the box. Also noticed that Pats are without a main shirt sponsor, which indicates that the economy is still in the doldrums I suppose. As someone who think that a united league between north and south is the way to go last nights attendance figures is very dissappointing (apart from Cork).

Wasnt happy with the crowd last night. All Ireland League is not going to happen for a long time but merging both league cups and instead have a cross border competition for all league clubs on the Island, just regionalize the early rounds, No point having Cobh playing Ballymena on a Tuesday night

Nissan. They decided not to renew their contract with us for next season. I think the club are hoping to have one sorted very soon.

I wondered the same myself. Apparently Nissan only pulled out on Friday. It might have been a case that they said they would continue to sponsor us then changed their mind.

That's very shabby. The club should have had them put pen to paper a month ago or else they'd be threatening to find an alternative. Your stock must surely be up from last year.

The same happened to Waterford United last year with the main sponsor pulling out at the last moment. They eventually rescinded their decision, but I wonder if it was at a much reduced level of financial input. Given the relative weakness of LOI clubs in the market, I wonder if this is a planned strategy...

Does anyone know if there are any highlights of the first few games anywhere? Do Setanta do a highlight clip or anything?

13/02/2013, 10:51 AM
There was no cameras in Tallaght. I think Setanta only sent cameras to the live game and may have told clubs not to produce highlights themselves.

Not 100% but got the impression from the Rovers forum that they may not have been allowed to record it. Unusual for SRFCTV not to have a camera there if that wasn't the case. I might be reading too much into.

No, or at least i don't think it was, i thought it was the FAI laying down the law so RTE had exclusivity on footage so as not to compromise their agreement. It was never driven by RTE afaik

Ah right. Typical Irish laying down the law on behalf of people who may or may not want the law laid down, but we certainly won't go to the trouble of asking them.

DFCTV recorded the Linfield v Dundalk game @ Windsor Park back in Feb 2011(exactly 2 years ago) but they(Setanta) have never allowed them to be shown even though Setanta themselves didnt show a live game that night.Strange.

No, the SRFCTV lads still do live commentary and show their own highlights after MNS has finished on Mondays. Setanta told them no footage to be recorded or shown at a later date.

Rovers v Coleraine and quarter final draw on telly tomorrow.
COLERAINE FC has been informed that the second leg of their Setanta Sports Cup tie with Shamrock Rovers will be televised...
The Bannsiders travelled to the Tallaght Stadium, Dublin in the first round, first leg fixture and recorded a battling 1-0 victory against the League Of Ireland outfit. Winger David Scullion was the man of the moment as he notched the winning goal in first half injury time.
Setanta have now decided to televise the return leg of the fixture, thus kick-off for the Monday 18th February game will now switch to 7.30pm to facilitate the Setanta Ireland TV schedules.
Following the match the draw for the next round of the Setanta Sports Cup will take place live from the Coleraine Showgrounds.

How does this draw work does anyone know?
I realise it's seeded vs unseeded, but is it open apart from that? Or do they wait to see if there are an even number of northern and southern teams?

Yeah they wait to see if it's an even number from each league and then split them up if there is. Personally if Pats go through I want the 3 IL teams to go through as well (obviously Cliftonville wont).
