He had more or less agreed to sign back but if things don't work out for him there I reckon we might have a full squad by the way things are going. I think we're on an upward slope again slowly but surely, things are under control at the moment. Yeah Neil Mckenna played for us for a while, he was fairly poor, got sent off v. Galway in the cup.

neil mckenna must be back with carbury so.. agree with longfordian he was **** poor with us..

I f any club can clear a profit from friendlies with cross-channel kids or reserve teams, whats the problem.? We should all be happy enough that the Drogs were ableto lighten the pockets of those who wouldn`t normally set foot inside United Park

Yeah, as much as we'd like to take the moral high ground. Not a single club can afford to

"Celtic's current first team squad includes Robbie Keane and Pat McCourt"

Are they actually going to be playing though? That article's bordering on false advertising if not.

It doesnt actually say that they will be playing but Keane is coming over in the next week or two for a competition presentation. My wee brother won something in it and he gets to meet Keane in Tallaght and get presented with a pair of Umbro boots.

Rovers are being pretty careful about advertising it as a Celtic XI, although it is taking a bit of a liberty putting Robbie Keane on the poster without an assurance he will play. There's strong word that he'll at least be travelling over though, and unlike a lot of the other games played by Celtic XI's this one is a few days after one league fixture and four or five before the next so there's a decent possibility of a strong squad.

i wonder will things kick off against the Celtic fans like they did with the Shels fans over the weekend?

Sounds like it was a horrible incident for those caught up in it but it's a little disingenous to suggest that things "kicked off with the Shels fans". For a start it sounds like the Shels fans were entirely innocent and were assaulted on the Luas a good distance away from the ground, there's a good chance that those resposnsible will be identified and hopefully prosecuted as the Luas has CCTV on board and at stops and the Shels board has taken the incident very seriously. Hopefully the scum responsible won't be allowed darken the door of a football ground again if they can be identified as Rovers "fans". It sounds like the Gardai were asleep on the night as it was pretty obvious even in the ground that a small group of 14-15 year old Burberry heards were intent on having some sort of go at the Shels fans (although reports suggest an older group was involved in the Luas incidents), it's sad that there's a need for a Garda presence even for a friendly but sadly there's a good few idiots and scumbags looking for any chance of a row around Tallaght.

never seems to bother clubs I remember shels had larsson on the programme cover when they had been told that he would not travel to Dublin and the game wasnt even down a celtic XI just Celtic. These games arent for week in week out LOI fans they are just cashing in on barstoolers imo.

Does anyone know how much one of these games costs the loi club involved?Be interesting to see some figures. I can't imagine it being a huge money spinner.

We had them over in 2007 and made something around 70k profit from the game, not to mention the money we made on extra gate receipts for the previous game where tickets were on sale in the ground (Shels game I think, which we won), about 1000 extra came in for tickets, paid into the game, bought the tickets for Celtic game and left.
For the game itself, Gordan Strachan wasn't even there and it was a complete reserve side.
If it's promoted right, you can make good money off Celtic.

Hmmmmmm, "Celtic X1" would suggest not PS but cant blame Shams for trying to sell the game, at least until they are told the players concerned will/wont be appearing. Sure if a few Irish celtic fans are left feeling ripped off its just a bonus:D

I've no problems ripping off Irish Celtic fans for a friendly.

However, if Keane does play - as others are suggesting he might - it'd be a great coup. Could probably fill Tallaght again for that.

Our game against Sporting Fingal went well on Saturday. Nil all and a good work out for the boys in the beautiful surroundings of Portmarnock. Fingal put a lot of effort into the friendly with 2 mini games on the pitch at half time and massive flags and banners up. Also had their cup with them and try as I did, they wouldnt fill it with coffee for me. When one of our players got injured their physio helped ours out and was an absolute star. Good crowd for a pre-season too and all organised really well. Fair play to them and best of luck to them for 2010.

Celtic play Rangers on the 28th. Absolutely no way any first team players involved in this friendly

As long as Rovers say its a Celtic XI there's no problem IMO. Might get them their first bit of negative sentiment locally though if they start building up the Robbie Keane angle and a bunch of nobodies turn up. Think Bohs got a bit of stick for something similar with Everton a couple of years ago.

On the basis that Rovers got well over 2,000 in for a friendly against first division opposition over the weekend, its hard to see how Rovers won't get a bumper crowd and make a few quid. Also the Keane angle will help.

All the new rovers fans in tallaght will fall for it id say they will get at least 4k for the game, cant knock rovers for making a few quid if they can

Talking to a mate who was in Terryland - the '30' figure is just mischief making, he said he counted at least 34 there ;-0). On serious note, he said Barry Ryan and Derek O'Brien only first-teamers from last season who played. Lot of trialists, some good, some not so good. Still that is 4-1 and 3-0 losses in preseason, not the greatest preparations

gufct
09/02/2010, 10:38 PM
Hardly shocking id say maybe 100 max it was a nothing friendly we had 9 trialists and it was absolutely Baltic. We are going to struggle with the squad we have at the moment with only 8 signes nearly all midfielders and 2 of them injured at the moment. Our budget is about a third of sligos and a quarter of the likes of Bohs and Rovers so Sean Connor has to wheel and deal like never before.

Against the Galway Oscar Traynor team (I think?) and Mervue United though; that's seriously worrying.

Triallists are all well and good, but if it's the case that many of the first team haven't played yet, it's a curious pre-season.

yeah losing to a galway junior select team and mervue (2nd from bottom in 1st div) is a terrinble start, losing both games by 3 goals is even worse.

it's not that last seasons players haven't played - its that they all have left. fair enough only 2 regulars played last night but all we have left from last season is 4 or 5 regulars anyway! we've lost the rest or else they haven't committed (in the case of conneely). worrying times unless SC can pull some rabbitts out of the hat. nb - the rabbitts on show so far have all by and large got caught in the headlights....

That's what I was thinking alright. Ouchee.

(I hope you don't mind a lack of sympathy from me though as I sense one club we can be looking to finish ahead of this season. :) )

I'll refer you to the earlier comment about people daring to make comments based on what teams look like less than a month before the first game.

(And does every one of your posts have to be condescendingly snotty, by the way?)

WoodquayBoy

It does, yeah, are you new to this forum or wha??
As for United, with so many trialists coming and going, not surprised there is no cohesion on the pitch and so the losses, while disappointing, are not surprising - the Oscar Traynor side are a well-oiled machine at this stage as they are so far into their season.
However, we need to start playing - well, at least signing - a starting 11 with the new season less than 3 weeks away. I've heard COnneely has been offered terms but he wants to see what kind of squad is assembled before committing. Classy guy.
