Exactly. This friendly will not be any more competitive, therefore we won't learn any more about Miller, no matter how well he plays. So it is a perfect opportunity to see what Fahey can do!

And I'm not debating how good a player Westwood is - I'm just saying that he shouldn't be considered for selection for Ireland.

Wasn't trying to change your mind about which Murphy is better. So your sarcastic reply really wan't warranted.

I rate Fahey higher than Miller, but I don't believe they're the same type of player. Fahey would play as a wide player in Trap's system.

Not saying I agree with it, but it's just the way it is, so comparing the two is pointless.

But even if they were vying for the same position, Trap is running our national team like a club. Friendlies are not merely experiments, they are trial runs for qualifying games. Players will not be dropped from our squad because there is a player who could be better, they are dropped when they don't perform, or if a player demonstrates beyond debate that he is superior at club level.

I'm not a fan of Miller, but he performed well against Nigeria, and to drop him would send the wrong message to everybody.

We all ripped into Benitez for dropping Keane after he scored two goals in the previous match while at Liverpool, and now many are upset that Miller has retained his place after an impressive performance for us?

Trap's whole message is that it doesn't matter whether you are a bench player or a starter at your club- if you're doing the business for Ireland you will keep your spot. Whelan and Folan come to mind as players who were not always figuring for their clubs, but have played important roles for us so far, and have thus kept their spots.

Club performances are important, and do tell us a certain amount about what our players are capable of, but it shouldn't be the be-all and end-all.

I doubt Fahey won't be called up as a result as he is not a direct replacement for Hunt (out and out winger). Ditto with Steven Reid. Trap has named four other wingers (cos he counts Keogh...) so I would be surprised if a replacement is called if Hunt has to pull out.

yeah i realise fahey isnt an out and out winger but in traps system thats probably where hed be played...still think its a missed opportunity to give someone else a run out in the squad

But my point is that he won't get a look in in Trap's system as he only uses out and out wingers.;)

Interestingly, Steven Reid, who is continuing his comeback from long-term injury, has been named on the standby list, but the match is expected to be a little too soon for him to be considered.

Btw Andrews has been banging in the goals for B'burn in pre-season, could be a good season for the lad.

Trap considers S.Reid a major doubt for the Cyprus game, don't mind the Socceroos so there's little chance of him being called up if Hunt pulls out

Realistically, Trapattoni conceded that Reid -- who has spent almost a year on the sidelines with his latest injury woe -- is a long shot to be even ready for the trip to Cyprus on September 5. Naming him as a back-up here only goes to show the esteem in which he is held by the Irish management.

"With his type of injury (knee) it is very dangerous to rush back too soon," Trapattoni warned.

I´m a bit surprised by a few selecting Foley for RB
Despite a poor 1st half against Bulgaria, Stephen Kelly is ahead of Foley for the RB spot.
This is a friendly to prepare the team for our last few group games.

Most here think it's a talent show to give new caps out to anyone Irish playing at a decent level. Isn't that what Stan did?

Judging by the disdain shown by many for the lack of Fahey, McCann, McCarthy, Murphy and others, yes, it looks like plenty were looking on this as a chance to look at new faces rather than what it really is - a warm up for the Cyprus game.

The team and immediate back-up is well established. Marginal squad places are up for grabs but our qualification prospects won't be affected by who's left out of the Australia squad.

The uncapped players will have the Premiership shop window to play themselves into contention for the Italy squad, maybe even Cyprus.

None of the English based players has played a competitive club game since we played Bulgaria. On what basis to people see the newcomers as being better options now than they were on the 6th June?

Players like Lawrence are probably worth an immediate look more than McCann or McCarthy. We have 4 good CM options if S. Reid is fit, but we're sparcely covered out wide. fahey may or may not be better than Miller but the fact is Miller played really well in his last game for us (mirabale visu).

Trap makes changes slowly but he does make them. Best, Nolan, St. Ledger, Folan, Westwood, Andrews, Foley and others have all played themselves into the squad. Others can do the same.

Nothing fancy, just QED or Et cetera or whatever. She asked what does that mean so he explained and she responded that only pretentious ****s drop in Latin into conversation. He replied "if that's what makes one a pretentious **** then mea culpa". To much laughter....

Barstool? You obviously have no idea but that's irrelevant to the discussion so I don't need to "prove" myself to you.

I saw the games. Overall he was good but made two basic errors for both goals which can not be overlooked. The reason why they could have been costly is because he was been looked at in those games to possibly name him in the squad. It's important to perform your best when in the spotlight.

I've seen Westwood play far more than five time this season. He's definitely going to be our future number one when Given has to retire. He also was named the best keeper in the Championship last season so I don't see how he hasn't proved himself as undoubtedly our number two keeper at the moment. Obviously people still can't make a balanced judgement of him due to his comments over a year ago.

And Brian Murphy is a League of Ireland keeper, what's your point? If you are going to judge how good players are based on what league they play in you are automatically ruling out Brian Murphy.

Joe Murphy was named League One keeper of the season so, like Westwood, he has merited his inclusion. He continued his great form when under spotlight in the playoffs and is in the squad because he is a better goalkeeper than Brian Murphy.

Was the Nigeria game more than 2 years ago?

I don't think new players should be given a chance in friendlies at this stage of the qualifying campaign. Time is limited in international football as it is and the more time the core group of the squad has together the better. Most of the players you mentioned will get a chance to show what they can do in the Premiership soon enough, as has been mentioned previously, so it's not imperative that they be seen up close as may have been the case if they were still playing in the Championship.

Firstly, I've been told that LOI is of better standard than League 1. These aren't my words but views from regular visitors to Elland Road and the Victoria Ground.

I'm sorry I didn't know you were a Coventry season ticket holder. But I notice Westwood made a mistake for one of Everton's goals on Saturday.

Liam Miller had one half decent game in two years and that makes him a world beater! Lets forget the terrible 30 odd games he had for Sunderland and QPR. If I'm not mistaken that was the first time Miller was picked to play for under Gio.

Friendlies are the perfect time to bleed in new blood. How else will uncapped players get a chances?

Liam Miller had one half decent game in two years and that makes him a world beater! Lets forget the terrible 30 odd games he had for Sunderland and QPR.Noone's said it makes him a world beater, the general consensus seems to be that the one decent performance will keep his place in the squad for the time being. Noone's calling for him to start, and the chances are that the likes of McCann or McCarthy will more than likely replace him. However, they have to prove they're worth their place first (they do, accept it, get on with it) whereas Trapattoni knows exactly what he is going to get from Miller

If I'm not mistaken that was the first time Miller was picked to play for under GioYou are, he played both games against Serbia and Colombia, and came off the bench in the away game against Georgia. He's been a mainstay in the squad under Trapattoni. Apart from the home games against Georgia and Bulgaria, he's featured in every squad to date

Friendlies are the perfect time to bleed in new blood. How else will uncapped players get a chances?
Then play them in the South Africa game, this game was only ever about preparing for the Cyprus game, and nothing else.

To be honest, considering the south africa friendly is just around the corner, this game is all about prep for cyprus, something trap has come out and said.

I would imagine the game against S.Africa will be like the nigeria game, showing new faces. I would expect to see mccarthy capped in that match, although i wouldn't expect to see mccann until the premier league season is well underway.

On the stephan ireland front, considering what happened the last time we played away against cyprus, i seriously doubt this would be the game he'd want to come back for. If he comes back it'll be for the italy match i believe, or not till after the world cup.

Kevin Doyle was here, however, with Mick McCarthy deciding that it would be worthwhile for the Wexford man to travel despite considering him doubtful for Wolves' Premier League opener this weekend. Trapattoni confirmed he had given McCarthy an assurance that he would look after the costly summer acquisition, with Doyle likely to play just 45 minutes against the Aussies.

I think the decision was a practical one from McCarthys point of view, the 45 minutes Doyle gets for us will help in his injury recovery and will be a good thing for Wolves
