April 2010 is handover date ( project is currently 4 weeks ahead).Italy Scotland and Wales will be final 6 nations games in Croker next year.Montenegro will, barring a play-off be final competitive football fixture.Personally, I can't wait to get back.

i agree, looking at the most recent photos, it seems as though the stands will be right on top of the pitch, perfect for great atmosphere.

I see on that RTE Capital D programme one of the leaders of local residents was saying that their fears of the new stadium had turned out to be unforunded & that it was looking much nicer than old stadium - glass panels as opposed to corrugated iron sheets.

Seen that. The new stadium will blend in more(as much as a stadium can) than the old one did. Looks like it will be a stadium to be proud of.

Seen that too. Hopefully the stand with one tier (north stand?) will be built up to a 3 tier eventually.

Not being smart but like that was always gonna be the case based on the final drawings for the stadium, the old stadium was an eyesore from the local residents point of view.

I work in one of the gov buildings on kildare st, and from the canteen on the top floor we've a perfect view of Lansdowne.
Have to say got a lump in the throat looking at it this avo. Looks brilliant, you can see the concrete shell where the steps will go on the East Upper tier.

Can't wait for normality to resume, Ireland winning games in Lansdowne, and Kerry winning games in Croker.
Can't wait.

I saw it from the Grand Canal Dock the other day (was doing my driver's Theory Test in Barrow St.) and it looks quite spectacular even from distance. It'll look a peach when done, I just hope it doesn't end up like the O'Connell spire and become filthy after a few months. Shiny surfaces are all well and good, but only if you make they stay shiny :)

Ah man getting excited looking at those pictures, cant wait untill we're back home. Have the feeling though that we are going to be looking at the havelock square end and saying isnt a pity that they couldnt finish it off and make it two tier as well (similar to how i feel when i see Hill 16, makes the ground look unfinished).

with a roof over it the north terrace end will look far more finished than hill 16. what would concern me more is the possibility of those roof beams blocking your view if you are in the last few rows of the stand..

Major problem alright, spectators should be able to see the pitch but not anytime it goes above head height, rugby fans won't be happy. However developers aren't sure they will sell tickets for those seats yet.

It won't be the last we've heard of this one.

A slot on Joe Duffy in a years time beckons.

Caution: Mass use of the phrase "Its all a bit Irish, Joe" may feature.

i went for a tour on friday (who you know, not what you know :p) and it looks good. 8 months to handover apparently. the low roof should ensure a great atmosphere and the fact it is largely enclosed should keep the sound in. that was a design consideration, clearly not something done at croker. the roof steel is all finished and the support cranes are coming down soon. still a lot to do, but a lot done too. if it was in south africa, i would be confident of its readiness for the world cup. loads of workers about and loads of work being done.

gets a thumbs up from me.

They saved £2 million by not putting a proper roof on Croke Park. Funny the media never re-visit that decision.

Not sure where the Ireland v England thread went I cant find it when i search. I searched for Ireland V England and yet it didnt come up anyway, point is would people now still want england over. Yesterday proved that things haven't really moved on that much, they are just better policed now than they were. These guys would get over to Ireland no problem.

thats not really correct. the cost of extending the roof was £2m (in 1992 prices) for every extra metre of roof cantilever over and above whats there now. it would need a lot more than a 1 metre extension to be a full roof

So much for the media conspiracy :)
The Cusack stand was finished first and after complaints about it, they adjusted the plans and extended the Hogan stand roof out by an extra 14m.
But imo no matter if the Cusack roof was extended by the same, it would not do much difference to keeping in the noise of the crowd.
The stadium functions fine for GAA crowds and their type of atmosphere but falls way short with the Ireland soccer games.
This new Lansdowne rd looks to be an acoustic peach of a stadium and tailor made for purpose.

Just back from a tour. Took lots of photos which I hope to post shorty. April finishing date is on schedule. Block bookers, clubs etc get the bottom and very top tiers (33,000 of them). Very few tickets will be on public sale.

Met Giovanni and Marco at a reception afterwards. Just before he headed off to announce the squad.

were you up at the back of the very top top tier and if so were the roof beams blocking the view at all? looks a littel dodgy from some photos ive seen

No, we were just being shown the "corporate boxes" ;) The guy on the tour was asked about this and he said that's the concern of the builders. Not a great answer.

Apparently there is going to be some major announcement today at 4 which John Delaney said would be significant.

Meant to update this earlier but actually forgot what thread it was on.

I spoke to my source again a few weeks ago. He is adamant that the cost was £2 million although it was to put in a full roof not to extend the roof at the planning stage. It may have gone up to £2 million a metre to extend the roof. Seems strange that the same figure applied though.

Anyway hope the Aviva has a proper roof that covers all the fans.

Yes, it's most unlikely that those not already on a list for tickets will get any.

The away fans will be seated to the right behind the goal in the lowest part of the stadium.

It's looking fantastic, but I still can't warm to that awful little terrace on the Havelock side; it looks so daft against the rest of the stadium. Plus as a spectator you'd feel so much more ... exposed?
