Precedent, or more likely selective use of a black armband for dead royal from every royal family in the world.
Oh and Townsend is 100% British. He's spoke about wanting England to beat Ireland in euro 88.
Professional pride made him an excellent player for this country, and he's obviously still fond of the country. But he's still considers himself British. I've no problem with this.

I'm not saying they're similar in any way except that there was a massive media circus, an outpouring of grief be it misplaced or not, effected somewhere else and we commemorated them in some token way.
The squad wearing armbands was a gesture on the part of the squad, not the Irish nation. A lot of them were subjects of hers and others would've had the sort of affection seen for her in the days after her death. If it gave the lads an extra bit to play for, bravo Andy Townsend. Did we win that day?

They won 4-2 away from home and then went to Lithiania and won again to make the playoffs where we lost to Belgium on a refereeing error. They weren't muppets.
Lady Di RIP may have had no connection with this country but she was certainly hugely popular. No interest myself but she was an incredibly popular figure who did a lot of good work and was part of the Royal family of our nearest neighbour where most of our squad earned their living.
did we wear armbands after the WTC attacks then? i think that the league had a minutes silence... again, i would have more sympathy for the people who died on Sept. 11 than a princess who died on the N11...
furthermore there were irish people who died in the Sept. 11 attacks. 2 who worked in the towers and 1 lady on one of the flights. Reason enough in my opinion.
