Given up on qualification or the team? Not the latter I hope.
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

I think that the fact that mother therese died at the same time made it a bit easier to swallow. No big deal then so is somebody desperately searching around for something to be offended about now.

How does something that didn't affect the wearing the black arms make it easier for you?

You understand incorrectly. It was 100% because of Diana, at the request of Andy Towsend

I remember hearing, that she told a friend, she felt she could help with the "Irish Problem", because she was very "good at sorting peoples heads out".

Ah dear the poor girl I can picture her stepping off the plane in Belfast , with the horrible Paul Burrell at her side, ready to make us all better with the touchy, feely bo***x that was fashionable at the time.

    Still, I would have.

All i wanted was a yes or no answer. I was not looking to be offended either. Andy Townsend was great player for Ireland who always gave his all but he has gone right down in my estimation now. Hate his smarminess on TV anyway. Right Little Englander he is now.

There was never any controversy on Di's death in Westport. People remember where they were when they heard of her passing, there was a book of condolonces in the town, people watched her funeral on tv and some people actually have Diana pictures in their houses. There was a sense of gloom at the time. I have never, ever, heard a bad word spoken about Di in Westport.

Ffs the op was about the irish team wearin black armbands. I didnt intend this thread to become a misty eyed recollection of the death of an insignificant celebrity.

I've a mental image of how the team would have lined up if they had marked the passing of Diana and Mother Theresa for the same game.

A row of solemn International Footballers, heads bowed, wearing black armbands and T-Towels on their heads.

Wolfie, your mental image has passed through the Information superhighway and into my head, and now Squire, I am laughing with the image of their solemn tribute if the Queen has popped her clogs.

Get over it lads, ffs. As someone pointed out, they were all either British or living in Britain anyway.

Waht are you on about , I watched most of the 2002 world cup in england and townsend was class , he had Sir Bobby Robson and his fellow commenators in knots and even had him referring to Ireland as we for most of the tournamanent, he got in under dodgy circumstances but relished his chance at international football and always gave 100% unlike some of our more illustrius home grown players , maybe he had a go at Di once she had a thing for sportsmen in the 90s.

I disagree, and they had an Irish jersey on at the time, so they were representing us.

Fair enough, but who cares if they did wear armbands? She never did anything against us, and she wasn't even Royalty, so whats the problem?
