Jayz, I don't know about that.
He was hardly a cult hero before that.
Got an inevitable boost but he's among the worlds most famous singer-songwriters for some time.
City definetly have the best bands playing at half-time.

O'Bama - "Eerah yeah, I'd say we can alright!"

    G.O'Mahoney Trapattoni'll sort ém out!!

Should point out that in my couple of years on foot.ie this is at least the third thread on 'best cover versions' ...I predict a 'worst cover versions' thread before sun up.

Off the top of my head and awarding extra points for doing something a little different to the original...

Kate Bush' Wuthering Heights covered by China Drum (N.B. NOT the clown with the acoustic guitar)

Joe Jacksons Got The Time covered by Anthrax

Julie Cruise' Falling covered by The Wedding Present

Rogers & Hammersteins 'A Few of My Favourite Things' covered by Me First & The Gimme-Gimmes
" I wish to God that someone would be able to block out the voices in my head for five minutes, the voices that scream, over and over again: "Why do they come to me to die?"

while i agree he was one of the most famous singer songwriters for soem time i think he now holds a fake cult status due to his popularity mainly from liverpool winning the CL.... as i have said i think his cover of "i see a darkness" is one of the best cover versions ever but when ever i some one elses hears it there like thats **** put on ring of fire... most of his own songs are dark. but his most famous ones are either funny or cheesy

Mojopin, you're living in a world of wrong there. Folsom Prison Blues is neither funny or cheesy.

Lionel is right, this is a recurring thread. I'll try and pick songs I haven't mentioned on the previous threads.

Paul Anka's entire new album. Special mention to Black Hole Sun.
    The Fall - Mr.Pharmacist
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Running scared

One I know I've mentioned before, but is worth repeating:
Ballboy - Born in the USA

Jogged by noby's post: The Fall's cover of The Kinks' Victoria I always loved, and isn't There's A Ghost In My House by them a cover as well?

Other faves, not already mentioned, off the top of me head:
The Futureheads - Hounds Of Love
    Soft Cell - Tainted Love
Hayseed Dixie - Highway To Hell
The Gourds - Gin And Juice
Tony Tribe - Red Red Wine
Richard X & Sugababes - Freak Like Me
Sonic Youth - Into The Groovey

Lots of good covers on The Bad Seeds' "Kicking Against the *****s." My favorites are Hey Joe and Muddy Water.

Both Minor Threat and The Sex Pistols do excellent versions of Stepping Stone.

Spizz does a good version of Kraftwerk's "The Model".

Who did the original version of Mr. Pharmacist?

It was by The Other Half, a '60s garage/psychedelic band.
The Fall have done a lot of covers. I only mention this one because I recently got a copy of the original.
Actually, they do a great version of Lost in Music.

What the hell has Johnny Cash got to do with Liverpool?

...as i have said i think his cover of "i see a darkness" is one of the best cover versions ever but when ever i some one elses hears it there like thats **** put on ring of fire... most of his own songs are dark. but his most famous ones are either funny or cheesy
And some people like the cheesy ones, be they A Boy Named Sue, or Ring of Fire or Ballad of a Teenage Queen or whatever. You don't have to like Man in Black to be a Johnny Cash fan. You sound like one of those pathetic fans who decry people who like the same things as "not real fans", pretending that they're somehow superior out of some fear that 'their' thing is being invaded.

to be fair to mojo especially in cobh any night out you will hear liverpool fans go de de de de then alrite alrite in scouse acsent, then team of crraghers then back to johnny cash it is annoying the way they think its a club song type thing. i like johnny cash myself btw, possibly the film opened my eyes to him more.

Not fond of our fans doing Ring of Fire at games either, especially when they're doing it whilst only drawing 2-2 at home to Shelbourne
