Perfectly reasonable for there to be consequences for bookings and sending-offs in the following years comp or whenever if that is the next time the player competes in a match in that comp.

The FAI's over-zealous disciplinary rules are another matter.

There should be an amnesty for finals, but if Rovers or Linfield players have overhanging suspensions there's nothing wrong with that.

Crusaders had a player sent off in lasy yrs final that would deserve a suspension for game following season. My point is that if you get to the final you will play more matches hence have the bigger chance of picking up bookings. In the europa league or champions league a player isnt suspened the following season for picking up 2 bookings. The rule is ridiculous and laughable

I'm almost 100% positive that a suspension in one year's Champions/Europa League carries over to the following season, but it sometimes gets eaten up by qualification rounds. If Crusaders had a player sent off in the final, he has to miss the next game, simple as. If it was for accumulated yellows, I think it should only count up until the second semi-final, then an amnesty for the final.

I don't think that's taken as a factor in disciplinary procedures though.

The attitude of governing bodies is that yes, if you get through rounds in a cup you have more games, but that's not an excuse for bad discipline, and the punishment is still there.

Setanta Cup Preview: Cork City v Crusaders
    By Brian Fitzgerald

    CORK CITY
While some League of Ireland clubs are still in pre-season, Cork City will play their fourth competitive game of 2013 on Tuesday night when they entertain last year’s Setanta Sports Cup winners Crusaders in the first leg of this year’s quarter final. Kick off at Turner’s Cross is at 7:45pm.

Having emphatically marked their return to the competition with a 4-0 win against Crusaders’ rivals Cliftonville in the first leg at Turner’s Cross, the Rebel Army saw out the tie courtesy of a 2-2 draw last week in Solitude.

Many have been impressed with Cork City’s performances against the Danske Bank Premiership highflyers, but speaking to CorkCityFC.ie, City manager Tommy Dunne says he expects another tough test:

“Crusaders are in second place in the Irish League and they will be tough opposition. They are the holders of the competition and they are going very well again this season.

“I remember facing them on a number of occasions throughout my playing career, and they are a club with history and a good tradition.”

“They will be a tough, strong team, and they will have no fear at all coming down here. I would imagine they will be favourites over the two legs, considering they are the holders and the fact that they have the majority of their season behind them, so we know we are in for a good test.

“We are representing our league, as well as our city and our club, and I think it will be a game worth watching.”

The Leesiders have almost a full squad to choose from with although John Dunleavy is still ruled out following tonsillitis, and Brian Lenihan is continuing his recovery from a groin injury. Kalen Spillane also misses out through suspension following his sending off in the second leg against Cliftonville.

    CRUSADERS
Last year’s champions Crusaders begin the defence of their Setanta Sports Cup crown tomorrow night as they make the long trek to Turner’s Cross. In doing so, they will be hoping to avoid a similar result to the one their neighbours and rivals Cliftonville suffered when they visited Leeside earlier this month.

Crusaders are currently in second place in the Danske Bank Premiership, 14 points behind Cliftonville (albeit with a game in hand). Last month they were beaten finalists in the Irn Bru League Cup final, again only to be bettered by Cliftonville.

The “Hatchetmen” will be without several key players for tomorrow night’s first leg, with as many as six first team players carrying over suspensions from last year. Amongst them are influential captain Colin Coates and their top scorer in the league this season – Timmy Adamson.

Stephen Baxter’s men could only manage a one all draw on Saturday in their league encounter with Dungannon Swifts and while that result saw them fall further behind Cliftonville in the race for the league title, a similar result tomorrow night would no doubt be better received and would give them a great chance of progressing to the semi final.

    Referee: Alan Kelly

    MATCH STATS
Cork City have won all of their last nine home ties against Northern Irish opposition in the Setanta Sports Cup.

While they won the Setanta Sports Cup last year, Crusaders could only manage to win two of their five games in 90 minutes.

Cork City striker Denis Behan is the joint all time top scorer in the Setanta Sports Cup with Peter Thompson. Both have scored 11 times since the tournament’s inception in 2005.

Think you are correct CD RE Euro bans carrying over as I seem to recall John Terrys ban for red against Barca last year ruling him out of first game this year (along with last seasons final).
Unless it carrys forward there is a risk of GAA style chaos where players exiting Championship could use volence at will safe in the knowledge that the seaon was over and the 1/2/3 month ban they would incur was not going to make the blindest bit of difference

It is going to be very difficult for Crusaders with all those players missing. I hope a good crowd turn up for the game in Cork as I am one of the minority that think this is a very useful competition to have. An attendance of over 2k would be encouraging.

If anybody should be used to dealing with suspensions it's Crusaders. They seem to pick up a lot of red cards.

Only red card suspensions, and it last until the next time the player is registered to play in a European game (ie the suspension could last for 5-10 years if tht stthe next time the player is involved in Europe). I think it happened someone like Colm Tresson with Bray who missed a game 9/10 years after his sending off

I'm glad someone did that. I was thinking about doing it every time I logged on today.

I noticed this too, They deserved a number of cards in the cross too but the ref: Alan Kelly was keeping the cards in his pocket. He did not want to give any decisions our way as it would seem like a home town ref situation but we were kicked and shoved a good bit and should have had a few more free kicks in good spots & maybe a Penalty. Not going to change, hopefully the ref in the 2nd leg try's to keep it as a cleaner game.
