FC Utrecht advise Maguire to fight for his place in the first team Thursday, 21 January 2010 for 12:47 |

FC Utrecht do not want to loan out Barry Maguire. The midfielder let the governing board of FC Utrecht know that he wanted to be loanded out. Foeke Booy, director of football matters, does not agree. " He has had a difficult period, but I find, looking at his age that he must fight for his place in the first team ." " You don’t just get trust, you have to fight for it" , says the football director in the Dutch newspaper Algemene Dagblad.

There were periods that we thought that he would manifest himself in the first team, but that did not succeed at the time. Its not that he will not get a chance, nothing is impossible. But at the moment, Maguire feels that everything is impossible."

Maguire (20) has played in four games so far, last season he played 28. Former employer Bosch showed interest in the Utrech player. " But we don’t think it’s a good idea" , Booy said in the Algemende Dagblad

The level of our training lies much higher than at Den Bosch. Barry has played already in the first division, a step back will only do harm to his development at the moment.

Slightly off topic but Denmark's U-19 player of the year for 2009 was a lad called Thomas Delaney who's a midfielder with FC Copenhagen. This award's been won before by Jesper Gronkjaer (remember him?), Jon Dahl Tomasson and Peter Lovenkrands, so he's in good company. Anyone know anything about him?

Barry Maguire was an unused sub tonight in a 2-0 loss away to Roda JC.

Nothing there about him having Irish parents (despite his name) and he's played underage for Denmark already.

He can also declare for USA if he wants. As that is his second nationality.

Doesnt seem to have any Irish in him

Barry Maguire scored Utrecht's 4th goal tonight against Celtic.

Chaos reigns in the Celtic defence in Utrecht. They are surely down and out of Europe now as substitute Barry Maguire drills a crisp low shot from about 20 yards beyond Zaluska's reach. The rampant Dutch now lead 4-2 on aggregate and look hungry for more.
I like high energy football. A little bit rock and roll. Many finishes instead of waiting for the perfect one.

Anyone know what the story with Maguire is now on the international front? Is he still in the Dutch youth set-up and does he look like he'll have a future in their senior squad? Could he have a future with us?

According to some Dutch friends of mine (and they know their football), Maguire won't get within an asses roar of the Dutch national team. One of them is an Utrecht fan and he seemed quite nonplussed when I mentioned Maguire.
Also, in an interview in the last week or two in The Star, I remember reading a quote from Tardelli where he said he was going to watch a player in Holland. I'll post quote if I can dig it out.
Cant think of anybody other than Maguire that this could be.

David Connolly, between 9 and 13 years ago?

seriously though, I had a look at the squads of the Eredivisie teams linked from the main wikipedia article - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eredivisie - and there are no English/Scottish/Welsh/Irish born players in the top division, so it must be Maguire

From page 95 of The Star on 15th of August.

Tardelli: "...we have more options now, and we are always looking for them. We even have a player in Holland who I will go to watch."

As Tetsujin says, it can't really be anybody else. Although I'm not holding my breath. Going on Trap's insinuations over the past year, I was expecting that Jamie O'Hara and Kyle Naughton would be lining up for us against Armenia at this stage!

I've just encountered the following: http://www.irishtimes.com/sports/soc...277683720.html

Former Republic of Ireland under-15 midfielder Barry Maguire then completed the rout on the night as Celtic’s dismal away record in Europe continued, with just one win in 28 games on the road now.
That's not correct, is it? If it were, wouldn't FIFA's article 18 on eligibility rule him out of re-declaring for us?

Edit: Sorry, it is right. Was just a matter of checking the first page of the thread... Ho hum. Anyway, my second question still stands.

In any case, the one game Maguire played at U-15 level was a friendly (against Northern Ireland), so it really shouldn't count towards present eligibility.

I don't think it matters if it's a friendly or not.

    Shouldn't or doesn't? Hmm...

I'm not sure about this one.

    18: Change of Association

    1. If a Player has more than one nationality, or if a Player acquires a new nationality, or if a Player is eligible to play for several representative teams due to nationality, he may, only once, request to change the Association for which he is eligible to play international matches to the Association of another country of which he holds nationality, subject to the following conditions:
    (a) He has not played a match (either in full or in part) in an official competition at "A" international level for his current Association, and at the time of his first full or partial appearance in an international match in an official competition for his current Association, he already had the nationality of the representative team for which he wishes to play.

    ...

    3. Any Player who has the right to change Associations in accordance with par. 1 and 2 above shall submit a written, substantiated request to the FIFA general secretariat. The Players’ Status Committee shall decide on the request. The procedure will be in accordance with the Rules Governing the Procedures of the Players’ Status Committee and the Dispute Resolution Chamber. Once the Player has filed his request, he is not eligible to play for any representative team until his request has been processed.
Wouldn't Maguire have had to go through this process the once already in switching from the FAI to the Dutch association after, in effect, temporarily declaring for us to play in an under-15 friendly? Unless under-15 friendly games aren't sanctioned by FIFA and he didn't need to officially register with the FAI or whatever in the first place? The simple act of having registered with the FAI, if he did so, and later making his switch to the Netherlands, whether he played any game for Ireland or not while he was with us, is the crux of the issue, as far as I can make out, but I'd be glad if someone could clear it up a bit as it would be unfortunate to lose out on a player that has been talked about quite highly due to him having played a friendly for us at under-15 level.

Take Shane Duffy, for example. He hasn't represented us yet at any level, but I believe that the simple fact of him having registered with the FAI and received his clearance documentation from FIFA to play for us rules him out from ever playing for Northern Ireland again whether he plays a game for us or not. Or am I mistaken?

I can't think of any test cases for it so I imagine if he decided to switch back they'd just have to submit it to FIFA and await the results.

In any case, he scored against Celtic so he's not Irish anymore in my book. (Celtic being a paragon of Irishness, of course, unlike those nasty League of Ireland clubs).

His development stagnated a bit last year, because of injuries. I hope he gets back on track this year.
As far as playing for Holland, he's not even playing for the u21's.
