“I’d always play Pirlo but Trapatoni says his first concern is to avoid losing goals. The truth is that we didn’t know what we were doing out there" Gennaro Gattuso, June 2004.
The more I see of John O'Shea, the more impressed I am with him both on and off the field.
He has come under a lot of criticism both from United and Ireland fans over the years, but he always plays with a smile on his face and really stuck it out at United when a lot of other players would have left to get more playing time. He fought for his place, and last season he played more minutes than any other player in the United team during their title winning season.
He's clearly a smart guy as well, and I think he could go on to be a top level manager at some stage in the Premier League.
In Portugal last year I met a good few of the Waterford Hurling panel who knew O'Shea and they said he had time for everyone and was well respected.
For him to stay the duration of that interview is remarkable, I don't think I would have stuck it out in his position!
the "some would say you have two left feet" jibe was pure Alan Partridge. Surprised he didn't walk after that question.
He's obviously not going to answer certain questions and get himself into trouble e.g. suggesting that Finnan should play left back instead of Kilbane etc.
Have to agree that he seems to have bulked out and got stronger and his form is more consistent. Playing better for us too.
If only he had scored that goal in Paris though ...
Thought O'Shea was outstanding for Man Utd against Moscow playing in a holding central midfield position. It raises the question whether given our dire resources in this department this is not his best position for us? It would be quite interesting to make a player for player comparison between the UTD team the other night and what might (if I were to replace Trapp) to be one possible Ireland team
Van de - Saar Given
Neville - Finnan
Vidic - Dunne
Ferdinand - St Ledger
De Silva - Duff
O'Shea - O'Shea
Anderson - S.Reid
Valencia - McGeady
Scoles - Keane
Nani - A.Reid
Berbatov - Doyle
Maybe we are not necessarily as mediocre as some people assume we are?
PS - I cringe every time I see the O'Shea miss on YouTube as that is me swearing audibly on the clip!
Is O'Shea injured at the moment?
No he's on holiday!![]()
LESS OF THE BULL NOW!
Injured vs france. Out for a few weeks yet. Groin i think.
LESS OF THE BULL NOW!
confirmed, O'Shea out for the rest of the season: http://www.manutd.com/default.sps?pa...newsid=6645445
Interestingly a Manure supporti work colleague asked me today where there any rumours circulating on this site about O Shea's injury. Tells me that Utd supporteres are speculating that he has been given leave by the club to deal with personal problems and the injury is a cover story as it was for Lee Sharpe. No evidence to substantiate this and I see he has been attending games at Old Trafford, so I would imagineit's a load of rubbish.
Too much partying and perhaps 'drug' usageGiven some time to sort his head out, never really happened and he never really became what he should have done.
Remember seeing one of his very early games for Utd v Sunderland I think (maybe Southampton) and he was breathtaking - all the comparisons to Georgie Best you could think of were coming out that day.
I thought you were off the drink Ronnie?
"No, I drink to help me mind my own business....can I get you one? (c) Ronnie Drew
Spanish newspaper Sport: Barcelona interested in Manchester United's O'Shea:
http://www.imscouting.com/global-new...ds-OShea/5873/
The guardian ain't that optimistic about his chances of actually ending up there:
Football transfer rumours: John O'Shea to Barcelona?
The Mill has laughed a lot over the years. At the bad times and the good. With Paul Merson and at Dean Windass. At life's vicissitudes and those times when businessmen galloping in the camp style to make their train fall and rip their double-breasted Ciro Citterio.
But, with the possible exception of the moment Jim Robinson bit the big one in Neighbours, we've never laughed at quite the same incredulous pitch as we did this morning when we heard a whisper that Barcelona are after John O'Shea. Yep. Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, O'Shea is right up there with Milligan, Cleese, Everett, Sessions, or Chimay, Laphroaig, Ouzo, Strathmore.
If John O Shea was english the media over there would be raving about how good he is. I know who I would rather have in my team between John O Shea and Glen Johnson
Its really not that complicated!!!
