Julie Kavner?
Me personally, no I just think she's 'alright'.
But the people who nominated her for 10 acting Emmys and 4 Golden Globes throughout the 70's 80's and 90's do. And so Does Woody Allen. He's cast her in most of his New York movies. I dont personally consider myself a fan of Allen, but it's generally accepted that he knows good actors.
I made enough drunken errors in my posts for you to gain the upper hand without having to say mad, groundless things. You should look out for those opportunities in the future. It'll save you being embarrassed when one unneccesary piece of rhetoric turns out to be shaky, as the example above proves.

Regarding Pacino, one that tends to be forgotten is "And Justice For all" , a tight little courtroom drama co-starring John Forsythe ( Blake Carrington out of "Dynasty" and the voice of the eponymous Charlie from "Charlie's angels")
Very 70's in tone (and synthy soundrack) focussing on a Lawyer (Pacino) & his personal dilemma when appointed to defend a corrupt Judge (Forsythe) in a Rape trial. The Judge may be innocent of THIS crime, but will Pacino's knowledge of the Judges previous actions affect his duty to the truth or his perception of the law?
While the movie itself is largely (sadly) neglected (it's one of Director Norman Jewison's best) , most film fans are at least aware of Pacino's performance in the key "Contempt" scene where an outraged Pacino prowls the court, having been told by the presiding judge that his comments were out of order, he rants "YOU'RE out of order! YOU'RE out of order! This whole damn TRIAL is out of order!" (They're aware of it primarily for it being a Joey Tribiani audition scene in "Friends".... Still, C'est la vie...)
I see your point, especially on Myers and Johannsen , but in general the "female lead" comment is a little harsh - See:
Chloe Sevigny in Melinda and Melinda
Christina Ricci in Anything Else
Helen Hunt in The Jade Scorpion
Elaine Stritch, Tracey Ullman & Elaine May in Small time Crooks
Samantha Morton in Sweet and lowdown
Judy Davis in Deconstructing Harry
Natasha Lyonne in Everyone says I love you
Mira Sorvino in Mighty Aphrodite
Diane Weist in Bullets over Broadway.
All decent actresses, and for Woody, who has tended to write more detailed male characters since the Annie Hall era, the majority are fleshy female roles (in some very dodgy movies in some cases, but fleshy & female nonetheless...)
Hunt, Morton and Davis I give you, but the rest are average actresses in average roles, the three I mentioned are good actresses in average roles.
Sevigny is the most over-rated actress of this era, famous for her dress sense and giving her boyfriend a real blowjob in a film
Different strokes I suppose.
I thought that Weist and Sorvino have never been better than in their Oscar winning roles, and having seen Elaine Strich perform in the flesh, I was left with the impression that she single handedly disproved the "women cant be funny" argument. Sevigney is , admittedly, useless to humanity, but using her as a self-obsessed porcelain waif with ideas above her station in a movie shows that Allen's casting instincts are pretty much on the money...
And Christina Ricci has capital knockers. Not a word against her will be heard. :D
If you have'nt seen 3.10 to Yuma yet then dont bother.I struggled through to the end last night.Average is being generous and some of the scenes are cringing.
I haven't seen the original 3.10 but the remake is a quality film.
As for Walk Hard, I was in stitches for large parts of it. It is a ridiculous film and don't go there looking for an intellectual feast but it is good at what it does.
anyone elses brain immediately go ..."hes a saucy one" as soon as they read saucy jacks posts?
spinal Tap....excellent film....
Walk Hard got really bad reviews........that put me off going but seems to get recommended here.....I have to say I found the song in the ads quite funny...
Life of Brian on rte tonight!!!

If you liked Anchor man you will like it. similar type of humour. And like anchor man wont do well in the cinema but DVD sales will build a cult following.
Its a strange type of humour not main stream i had no expectations so i went in there with an open mind and loved it will watch it again a few times.
Anyone that doesnt like it will prob be the kind of person that thinks will and grace is funny.
Just to give you a feeling for the type of comedy i like Life of brian spinal tap anchor man along with shows like south park family guy mighty boosh all high on my list of favourites .
Yeh Anchor man had me chuckling.Loved that bit where they were talking about their(1970s) aftershave."This one called Panther..its made from real Panther":D
Got Three Burials out last night staring Tommy Lee Jones, Good show
Why dont we just use this thread for Recommended Films only
and those who want to discuss popular actors and actresses start another off topic thread?
There is only one thread in this forum for Films and it turns the thread to treacle if we have to plough through other discussions about the merits of actors and actresses.
Saw Superbad last night for the first time.. absolutely hilarious, funniest comedy in years IMO..
I'm Not There based on part of Bob Dylan's life with him being played by a nr. of actors plus Cate Blanchett.
Some parts were very good, especially the depiction of Dylan as a teenager being played by a 12 year old precocious cocky black kid.
Overall the film focuses on a few areas of his life, much of it around Dylan's time in England in the mid sixties. The Pennebeker documentary "Don't Look Back" has already done that and much better. AFAIR the real Dylan in that Documentary (the light bulb press conference) was funnier and more coherent than Cate Blanchett's portrayal.
I wouldn´t not recommend it.
For me it doesn´t stand beside the real footage in the Scorcese /Pennebaker/Newport documentaries, even Renaldo and Clara.
Have to disagree, I thought I'm not there was a great film and Blanchett gave a great performance.
Disagree with the double negative "I wouldn't not recommend it"
or everything?
Out of interest have you seen Don't Look Back?
or the other documentaries that many of the scenes were taken from? like where Dylan sings Hattie Carroll out of the back of a truck or the Newport appearances.
massive dylan fan. thought "Im not there" was rubbish. blanchet was good but agree that the real dylan footage is way more entertaining. Best performance was the young black kid.
anybody seen very bad things or Buffalo Soldiers? Two quirky films I rate that have probably passed many people by. Went to see No Country for Old Men and it's a return to form for the Coen brothers. Moody, dark and tense - my kind of film. The first 90 minutes are outstanding but after that it goes in a reflective direction that kind of threw me. The ending especially so. Well worth a watch. Next up for me is Cloverfield and the Valley of Elah.
Buffalo Soldiers is a good one. Some excellent black humour. Very much recommended.
Hoping to see Cloverfield myself over the weekend. Haven't been to see anything in ages.
Buffalo Soldiers is good. Jarhead is worth a look too on similar theme if different war.
I recommend No Country For Old Men too. Not funny like other Coen films that I liked such as Raising Arizona or Fargo but very interesting and intriguing.
A Coen film on Sky Movies last night, Blood Simple.
It's a raw masterpiece.
The earth certainly moved :)
Saw Bobby over the weekend, based around the assasination of Robert kennedy, it focuses on the lives and the relationships of the staff of the hotel (cant remeber the name) where he was shot. Amazing cast and great inter-twining storylines.
Bobby is excellent. Had forgot about that one.
Jarhead is another one that I'd agree is very good.
saw that "walk hard" last nite. mildly amusing.
Saw a german movie today called "The tunnel", very good
It was about some west germans digging a tunnel under the berlin wall and trying to get their loved ones from the east. Brilliant acting, and good suspense. Worth a look
The Tunnel is very good, that same director did Downfall.
Fallen was on Sky M tonight. It's a very clever film.
I was trying to think of a better ending for it and I couldn't come up with one.
Usually I'd have to be nailed to the sofa to sit through a big budget special effects so called horror. I missed the first 15 minutes, I couldn't figure out why Ezabel would be so focussed on Hobbs the detective. Wouldn't you think that someone with those ambitions, (bring down Babylon) would have bigger fish to fry and the capacity to do it?
is fallen the one with Denzel Washington and John Goodman? "Time is on my side - yes it is" is that the right song they keep singing?
That's right, it annoyed me a bit that they use the Rolling Stones songs in that context, a bit of a cheap commercial trick and then what a great leap in imagination to have Sympathy for the Devil as the closing song.
Who started all that? find a classic pop tune, shovel it into the film in some context and have the audience humming it in their heads.
