A Roy O'Donovan strike on the stroke of half time was enough to seal all three points for Cork City in a very poor tie in Belfield Park tonight.

Pete Mahon went for a more attacking team than that which started in Drogheda last week, with Paul Byrne returning in place of Brian King and Evan McMillan coming in for his debut at centre-back, with Conor Kenna returned to left-back and Killian Gallagher dropped to the bench.

The first chance of the match came from UCD, with Conor Sammon heading just wide from a good cross from Conan Byrne. However, Cork had the better chances of the opening period, with Darren Quigley making a superb stop with his feet shortly before the half hour, while Billy Woods skied over from 12 yards after a decent set-up. For UCD, Shane McFaul set up Conan Byrne, whose shot from 25 yards was narrowly over, while McFaul himself tried his luck shortly afterwards from distance, but was just wide.

The only goal of the game came on the stroke of half-time - Roy O'Donovan was played through on the left side of the box, and he advanced to slot past the advacing Quigley.

UCD came more into the game a second half chacterised all too often by slack passing and needless concession of possession from both teams. For the second home game in succession, Alan Mahon nearly notched his first league goal for the club with a 25-yard free kick, but this time Mick Devine punched clear. A minute later, Conor Sammon got his head to a Conan Byrne cross, but could only direct straight at Devine.

UCD's best chance came on 53 minutes, when a free from the right was superbly controlled by Alan McNally only for him to skew horribly right across goal.

The game petered out after that, with the only real chances of the remainder of the game coming Cork's way - a bad miss from John O'Flynn with a back-post header and a fumbled cross from Darren Quigley ultimately being deflected over for a corner.

A poor performance then from both teams, and UCD will hope a trip to Sligo Rovers next weekend gives its usual returns in order to get their 2007 season off to a belated start.

UCD - Quigley; Mahon, Kenna, McMillan, McNally; McFaul (Gallagher 87), C Byrne, Finn (Bolger 87), Doyle; Sammon, Byrne (Bogdan 79). Subs not used - Gregg, King.

      560?
      Is that correct?
City definetly have the best bands playing at half-time.

O'Bama - "Eerah yeah, I'd say we can alright!"

      G.O'Mahoney Trapattoni'll sort ém out!!

        Give or take.

Seemed a fair few more in the first half than in the second.

I thought it was a bigger crowd than usual for the game, to be honest, but it's about par for the course for the past couple of years

I never knew your crowds were so poor.
Thought ye'd attract a load of undergraduates from the bog who were mad to see LOI footie.

There's been an attendances thread here for the past four years for a start! You not been in Belfield ever?

              Nope.
"We skip college/work and head to UCD Friday?" just doesn't have that Dalymount/ Tolka ring to it.
Will try make the next one.

I'm furious about the goal we conceded. It was a free kick 30-40 yards out near the left sideline. We should have tossed it into the box as the large group of our players up forward in and around the box were expecting. Instead we passed it infield and between Finn and McFaul (not sure who was really at fault) we lost the ball around the middle, Cork broke well and scored. There was a touch of arrogance and naivete to their play sometimes last night. They've got the ability but they need to concentrate a bit more. That said, they are both very young.

Thought Alan Mahon had a much more solid game that his last two. I also have to commend whatever he's up to on the training ground as he seems intent on breaking his scoring duck with a cracking free kick.

I'm still not too convinced about Conan on the right wing but when he does get the space he whips in some great crosses.

Cork deteriorate more and more every year I see them.
