    Conor Sammon

Sammo is a real talent he is a great player, but his only problem is not scoring enough but if he had a good strike partner do you think it would be a different scenario?? but who is there? also sammo deserves player of the year for his work rate and holding up of the ball which is excellent

haha not a hope!! it fact! he is a great player, and isolating alone upfront takes goals from his game

To be honest Sammo could have double his goal tally if he could pull the shot off right. Sometimes he seems to trip over himself or can't get his frame right in a sort off Peter Crouch-esque way. His second problem is that he misses practically every high ball. His leap is nearly always timed incorrectly. Play anything into him below his chin and his holding up play is excellent. His lay offs are usually quite intelligent too. His pace is decent and his ball control on the ground is sharp enough too. He has the makings of the great striker but he has to work hard on winning the high ball.

Him up front with Paul Byrne would be ideal. Problem is, then you have to drop either Ronan Finn or Gary Dicker to make space for Byrne...

Slightly more in touch with reality, I propose we get that machine from the film The Fly and put Sammo and Paul Byrne in together. That way, we'll get a forward who's got great strength on the ball, who can run at defences and who doesn't get injured every few games (Sammo) coupled with someone who can win a header and who can shoot straight (Byrne).

I suppose though if our players were perfect, they wouldn't be playing for us...

As someone who also can't head the ball, is knowing when to leap instinctive or can it be drilled into a player? For an example at the top end of the scale, most defenders have a height advantage on Henrik Larsson yet he scores an amazing anount of headers simply because he can leap well.

Sammo has been brilliant this season- our best player IMO. He has a great touch and good awareness of what is happening around him. We wouldn't be doing half as well without him this season.

He's had plenty of blown opportunities in front of goal this season. He should have more goals.

It's a sacrafice we have to make if we want to score goals. Personally I'd put Tony Mc CB, Dicker and Finn CM, and Byrne and Sammo up front.

The 4-4-1-1 is the best we can do. Tony Mac has to be in midfield. Even when he's at the back his absence in the centre is telling and Kenna/Ally Mac is better than Ally Mac/Tony Mac. You can't afford to drop Dicker or Finn either. It remains to be seen whether Paul Byrne is actually that damn good.

Finn on the right could be an option then, with Tony Mc staying in the middle of the park. Finn would have less influence on the game on the right, but he could cause problems if he drifted inside and it would be ideal if Mahon was overlapping.

Mahon overlapping?! That doesn't happen. I also feel a player of Finn's talents would be wasted on the right.

Sadly this season's departures may resolve this headache somewhat.

I did say it would be ideal. I agree with you re Finn but I still think it's worth a try in one of the last games.

Well Pete says he wants to improve the squad and bring in three new players so you never know what might happen.

I'm getting severely bored and frustrated going in a circle in these discussion but we can't plan until we know our fate. This next month feels like limbo.

You know there's a good rugby team playing out of Donnybrook.
Why don't you join us on the bandwaggon? UCD will still be here next season.
