Its kinda annoying that it clashes with Setanta Cup every week!! I have yet to see MNS due to it!!! Must catch it online some evening.

Saw it briefly on TV3 on Friday but the Bohs "penalty" at home to Bray a ludicrous decision. One of the worst ever?

I know someone said this before but Doolin's really on the defensive in that interview. He just won the game!

A few nice girls out in Belfield the other night...that'll get the lads in!

Also, the first two Cork goals were soft. That's the Gary Rogers I knew at Bray.

I'd let him have that.

But any pundit who uses a platform like MNS to run down the league the way he just did should be shown the door.

He can plead brutal honesty all he likes, but the domestic game is going nowhere so long as nay-sayers like him are given airtime on premium shows.

Roddy Collins (http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f352/ifgrounds/CollinsNotWanted.jpg) .... would you ever just go away ..... soon, and forever.

Can people for the love of god email the show and tell them not to have him on again, Jesus wept the damage he does is unreal.

It'll take five minutes lads, please do it.

He said the same on Newstalk last Thursday night. Didn't have a positive think to say. Meant to start a thread about it then. He said he didn't think the league had improved at all, in terms of skill, in the last 5 to 10 years.

Don't think it's the kind of thing to be saying, when you're basically supposed to be promoting the league.

Nowhere near Tom Connolly's decision with Rovers v Cork. Yes, that's how bad that decision was.

Heard that too. Ludicrous to say no improvement since 1998. He said only fitness had improved.

Got to agree with you there, I listened to the crap he was mouthng on about the league and how a Bohs fan said 'he would never go to a game again'. I just can't understand how a muppet like him is allowed to comment on the game on a show like MNS when its there to promote Irish Football. Think I will do something about this ;)

The guy is a mumbling idiot ..... if anyone wanted any logical reason for this guy not to be seen again then its this. I wouldn't mind if he had a point but he doesn't. There ARE players knocking on the door. I know it wont open but they are there. As long as they are dredging up guys from division two in england then there are definitely players here worthy of a shout.

The guy is a fool.

Is it there to 'promote' or to 'report'?

If I weren't already a regular at EL matches, i'd be more impressed by a programme that reported honestly on the game here without inflating the quality or appeal beyond what i can see with my own eyes. Part of the reason i almost never watch the Premiership anymore is that breathless 'best league in the world' stuff you get from commentators and analysts - even the supposedly great RTE panel; it's not the best league in the world and outside the top 4, you don't even get particularly good football. I'd rather not have similar guff about our league thanks.

The sensitivity of the El fan at the standard of our competition been questioned is, i think at bottom, due to the fact that most of us know that what Roddy said is true; there aren't any players in this league good enought to play at international level (and given the constraints facing national team managers, that's not a particularly high standard). Sure there's a few that wouldn't disgrace themselves in a friendly, but there isn't one who would offer the team something beyond what a dozen lower league journey men based in England could give it. Probably the only player in the league who could really shine in that context isn't qualified to play for the republic (McCourt).

Roddy may be vainglorious, and his managerial abilities may not match his own opinion of them, but he's not, in this case, bullsh!tting; he's saying what he sees and i think most of us secretly agree, which is why we protest overmuch; if it really were a ridiculous statement, then we'd be taking the p!ss, not fuming.

Slightly tangently, I read something today that set out the wage bills of all the SPL sides for last season; quite a few were lower than similar figures for one or two EL teams. Wages here are inflated by the relatively closed pool of talent; only players here already are on offer, bar one or two returnees every year, which means the slightly better can command wages at a differential well in excess of what the small increment in ability would suggest; until there's real competition from players to get into this league that will continue to be the case - teams will bankrupt themselves to get the best players who aren't good enough for Div. 2 (or even the conference) - and because we're paying them so much, well they must be good, eh?

The qualities this league has to sell to the uncommitted are the passion, inventiveness and humour of the fans, the joy of localism, the fun of away trips and the flash of the very occasional sublime moment in the largely mediocre to ridiculous norm. What has also been notable and refreshing in the first few weeks of MNS has been the honesty, intelligence and humour of players and managers; really refreshing in comparison to the doltishness of the average prem post- match 'exchange' of cliches; I don't want premiership lite, and i don't want paranoid hype - i want what i get from talking about the game at or after the game, or here or on club forums.

Are you saying the Roddy was honest in what he said, and in the way he said it?

I disagree, i definitely think that Joe Gamble would add to the Irish and have him in there over Lee Carsley any day of the week.

passinginterest
14/04/2008, 9:25 PM
I wouldn't necessarily disagree with him in the players not being full international standard. It's saying stuff like the league hasn't improved in the last 10 years that's unnecessary.

Criticism has it's place on MNS just like it should, Roddy just does it for the sake of being controversial. We all know the league is not the most technically wonderful, it's certainly improved though, and the success of players like Fahey and McCourt is proof of this.

Finding it odd every week how key moments are missed, Pats vs harps theres a lob from Quigley that produced a wonder save/lucky save from their keeper. And shortly before a Quigley howler from 8 yards out.

Should be more football on it specially when good bits are left out yet for Drogs they show a sub coming on, thought only Eurosport did that in their highlights.

Can we not start this rubbish again? Let's have a player signed from the Conference replace a player in a team pushing for Europe again. Yeah, makes sense.

Missed it tonight; thankfully I have the online to see if those two penalties in Belfield were as bad as everyone said. And I can watch Alan Mahon actually score a goal!

Did he honestly say the standard of the league hasn't improved?

Total bull**** if he thinks this is the case. From a Cork City point of view the standard of what is served up at the Cross is of a different class compared to only 5 years ago.

Total rubbish.

Glen Crowe is now an average Premier League striker now Roddy!;)

Your right, but if they showed two chances, they pretty much coved entire match from a Sligo attacking point of view.

Con Murphy knows his stuff (even if he sometimes doesn't know which camera to look at :D ).

Id like to know if he or any of the panel actually attend games every week.

Has anyone seen any of them at a game?

Does Roddy ever go to games when he's not paid by RTE do do so?
