I thought he was very quiet in the first half but began imposing himself in the second. He picks up awkward positions between the opposition's midfield and defence, so he tends to make space. With Zaha frequently occupying two men as well, I can see why Murray has found himself so often among the goals this season, as defenders would be getting dragged all over the place. Watford looked a shadow of the team that had been described as the most fluid and attacking in the division.

Had a good look through the Palace forums today. The vast majority were very positive about his 2 yr extension. He finished the season strongly and some reckon the premiership may well suit him better (cited the less frantic pace in comparison to the Championship). His lack of pace and inconsistency continue to be his main weaknesses. Furthermore, he had a bad knee injury this year which is concerning. Hopefully, with a good pre-season behind him, Owen will play a big part in Palace's year next season.

Indeed he was, against Colombia. Was in Trap's first Irish squad, back in the day. http://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/international/2008/0513/231786-ireland/

I actually remember bugger all other than admiring just how decrepit Dalyer had become and that over there stood our manager, Giovanni Trapattoni.

McCarthy's been injured for over a year now. Some muscle injury that won't clear up.

Just read the match preview on BBC and it says he's " back in training but is not yet fit". Is he expected to make a return to action soon?

It seems he has fully recovered but he picked up a minor strain during the week.

edit: interesting that Garvan starts ahead of the hotly-tipped Jonathan Williams, who was playing for Wales on Wednesday night. Also great to see him finally make the step up to the Premier League after all the high hopes we had for him.

Thought he did really well today, Garvan. Palace were playing pre historic football in the opening 20 minutes, but Garvan put his foot on the ball and made things happen. He really has a presence in midfield, albeit not the paciest player. But he looks extremely intelligent on the ball and turned the tide back towards the Spurs goal any time he got the ball. Got a real vote of confidence from both Peter Drury and Clive Allen on the broadcast I was watching.

I missed the start of the second half until he was substituted but he was quietly effective in the first half. Tottenham were a mess once Holloway changed the team's shape - they didn't look like they knew how to adapt their defensive system. Delaney did very well overall and could even have had a goal or two were it not for good blocks.

Have to say it was the first time, great seeing him in the Prem given how long he's been mooted.

Impressed with his comfort on the ball, and how much he demanded it. He is exceptionally slow though and was defensively caught out a couple of time when covering over at the far side in the first half (once in particularly let a through ball in for Lennon). But decent enough, hope he can keep his place.

Garvan isn't in the Palace squad at all today for their home fixture against Sunderland. Has he picked up an injury?

Delaney has started in the centre of the Palace defence, whilst O'Shea and Westwood feature in the Sunderland rear-guard.

I assume he's referring to Ian Holloway there? Was there a falling out or does Holloway simply not rate him? He started Palace's opening game of the season, so it all seems odd.

It's quite incredible that Holloway has been so quick to dispose of someone like Garvan who really contributed to the promotion success. The players he's decided to replace him with are of very, very dubious quality. Garvan is probably hoping he can get himself a loan and some regular playing time before coming back and trying to impress a new manager.

Had a quick look at their Wiki page and it appears new signings Stephen Dobbie and Florian Marange are also down in the reserve list. A very bad case of squad planning by Holloway then. As I read somewhere, he's taking the approach of throwing enough sh*t at a wall and hopping enough sticks.

Kind of brave words to say about your manager!!
However as he signed a 2 year contract at the end of May maybe not, but it is one of the problems
with having a twitter account, I don't think you can unpost what you have already posted.

Absolute disaster for the poor guy. Twitter really only serves to self destruct but I can understand his frustration. He's been waiting a long time to make it to this level and then to be cut having scored a cracker only a few days earlier, on top of a fairly impressive performance against Spurs. What was Holloway's thinking or did they have a falling out?

I wonder if our rarely seen Palace fan, Fitzy, has any inside information?

Edit: I just see it mentioned here in The Croydon Advertiser. (http://www.thisiscroydontoday.co.uk/Dobbie-Marange-Garvan-Wilbraham-omitted-Palace-25/story-19751272-detail/story.html#axzz2e1gJuvfD) Seems he wasn't happy with not playing every week... not sure that makes a huge amount of sense as he started nearly all the remaining games last season after returning from injury. He only came on with a half hour remaining against Stoke alright but he hardly threw his toys out of the pram over that, surely? If he was sick of being substituted it would make slightly more sense.

Not a great surprise, but I thought he would stay for the Arsenal game.

Watched this video yesterday and felt a bit sorry for him, he as much as admits he may have got his squad selection wrong.
However I am not sure if I understand why he has to stick with that squad, I thought you could play who ever you liked, apparently not.

http://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/346537/VIDEO-The-full-footage-of-Ian-Holloway-s-tense-Crystal-Palace-press-conference

Looks like the video is unavailable now, but he did seem a bit down but big enough, to his credit, to admit he may have got things wrong.

Had a look at Owen's twitter account but he has not posted anything yet, would not advise him posting anything undiplomatic.

As I understand he he still can't play for Palace until January?

I guess he can pass the time working as a clairvoyant, maybe he could post up his prediction for the next Euromillions lottery?

Charlie Darwin

What did he say about his squad selection?I don't think the video is available outside the UK.

Garvan can't play in the league until January, but he would have been able to play in the cup if they'd not been knocked out.

He's not on the squad list for this season and that can't be amended until January. The new manager would have to apply to have him included from January on.

This is what he said:-

"We have lost five games since we announced the 25-man squad and I feel there's something wrong there. I don't feel we've got the same spirit,"
the manager said. Maybe we changed too many, but that squad is what we have got until January, so they better buck up."

It seems Owen knew a lot of the players would not be happy with his new squad, including and probably in particular his own omission.
That's how I read it anyway.

Hadn't really expected Garvan to out-live Holloway at Palace when I first read his tweet a few months ago, but, for his sake, I'm pleased to see he was right in the end. Seems the squad selection really damaged morale at the club. Shame Garvan can't play for the club again until January, mind.

However I am not sure if I understand why he has to stick with that squad, I thought you could play who ever you liked, apparently not.

Every Premier League club has to select a 25-man squad for the season at its outset. As Charlie points out, that can be amended in January after the transfer window has re-opened. It's been that way since 2010. More info here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/8858634.stm

In and around this year's usual summer transfer gossip, you may have noticed the mention of 25-man squads and home-grown player quotas.

The 2010-11 Premier League season will see top flight clubs forced to comply with rules over the size and make-up of their squads.

The Premier League says the new rules are designed to increase the number of young 'home-grown' players in the Premier League, with a long-term aim of giving more options to the England manager.

But what will they actually mean in practice? BBC Sport explains the key points of the new system:

- Clubs register a squad of up to 25 players, which must include at least eight 'home-grown' players, at the end of each transfer window.
- Home-grown players do not have to be English; home-grown players are defined as those who "irrespective of nationality or age, have been affiliated to the FA or Welsh FA for a period of three seasons or 36 months prior to 21st birthday"
- Clubs can supplement squad with unlimited number of players under the age of 21.
- Changes can be made only during transfer windows, although in exceptional circumstances (eg goalkeeping injury crisis) moves could be allowed.
- Players loaned to Football League clubs cannot be replaced, but can regain their spot on return to parent club.
- Rules apply only to Premier League matches, not European, FA Cup or League Cup action.
- First deadline is 1700 BST on 1 September (24 hours after end of August transfer window).

In spite of that, clubs can also be punished for fielding what the league perceives to be a less than "full strength" selection (http://fclegal.blogspot.co.uk/2010/11/premier-league-rules-and-team-selection.html). I find that ridiculous since all 25 players have been registered for the season and, thus, a manager should logically be entitled to select from that squad whomever he feels is best suited to delivering the best result for his team on any particular day. Who are the Premier League to decide what constitutes a "full strength" selection? Not only should questions of team selection (within the boundaries of the squads registered with them) be outside their realm of authority, it's impossible to quantify something so subjective anyway.

The bit that confused me was Owen played the first couple of games or so, I guess that was before the transfer window closed.

It would make more sense to me have everything sorted out before the season starts.

Puzzled me too. I had Garvan in my Fantasy Premier League team and all. Was gobsmacked by his omission. Holloway had nerve!

What was the supposed nature of his "attitude problem"? Did he and Holloway fall out over something in particular?

CraftyToePoke
23/10/2013, 7:23 PM
Also, wouldn't Owen and Palace be better served by sending him on loan, then or even now, than having him disgruntled around the place sending tweets like that. Should have been in that 25 comfortably anyway.

DeLorean

"In fact if it wasn't for a conversation we had the week before, because he wasn't going to be in the starting XI, he would have been in my 25.

"He made it totally clear to me that he didn't want to be in the 25 if he wasn't starting almost every week. I couldn't guarantee him that." - Ian Holloway

Charlie Darwin
24/10/2013, 9:58 AM
That sounds like a huge cop-out. It's not Garvan's place to decide if he's in the squad or not. Sounds like Holloway got a bee in his bonnet and decided to lay the blame on the player.

DannyInvincible
24/10/2013, 11:07 AM
Exactly. If Holloway had wanted him in the squad, he could have registered him whether Garvan liked it or not. And wouldn't he have beeb obliged to play anyway, or to fulfil the duties to which he was contractually bound, in other words, even if he didn't want to?

Charlie Darwin
24/10/2013, 11:21 AM
He would have been obliged to play, and it's not like he's a star player who can afford to hold a club to ransom. He'd have done as he was told and probably would have set out to prove his manager wrong.

DannyInvincible
29/10/2013, 8:47 PM
I mentioned how English Premier League clubs can be punished for fielding sides not deemed by the authorities to be "full strength" a few posts back. Of course, both Wolves and Blackpool suffered punishment in recent seasons as a result of this dubious and inconsistently-enforced rule. I would assume that the English League Cup has a similar rule in place to which competing clubs are "supposed" to adhere, but, looking at some of the line-ups from games in that competition this evening, I'm forced to wonder how clubs can get away with fielding whole teams of players that wouldn't see first-team action otherwise were it not for the status of the game and their club's lesser opinion of the competition.
