Hopefully this isn't his goalscoring run for the season & that he goes on to prove that his performance tonight wasn't a flash in the pan. Fair play to him though.

Well, they signed Ben Arfa today, who looks a player, Carroll is a bit tricky to drop, but after that, Ameobi is decent but not a fixture either and Best was selected ahead of Ranger tonight, with Pardew saying Best is the better option as a player. Pardew also said in post match he had pushed for a start, got one and nailed a hat trick, so hopefully its the start of him becoming an established Prem srtiker.

But we will see.

Apparently Chris Hughton took a lot of stick from the board for signing him.

The Newcastle fans I know absolutely hated him before today. I guess because he's not a high profile player it wasn't properly communicated that he'd been recovering from a long-term injury, and people figured he was just cashing his cheque. Gibson's in a similar situation at Man United. Judging by the standing ovation he got tonight I'd wager they've changed their tune.

scored one in the championship (then division one) VS Stockport: http://www.soccerbase.com/results3.sd?gameid=249457
Was looking through my vids of him and can confirm he scored one for Man City against Crystal Palace on April 1st, 1991 in the top flight, obviously pre-Premier League though. Can't remember what its called but he got one with his left, one with his right, and one with his head.

Fair play to him. Hopefully he can kick on and keep scoring.
Well taken hatrick, though the most skillful thing he did was that header in the build-up to the last goal.
Similar type player to Walters. It'll be interesting to see the two of them battle for a place in Irish line-up if/when Doyle gets injured. Long is more in the Keane role I think

Didn't there used to be a lad on here

Changed their toon, surely?

Think our Leon dodged a bullet coming off at half-time today. Newcastle are 2-0 down and reduced to 10 men at Stevenage.

Ah I didn't realise he came off at half-time.
Smart move. :)
Bit of a feather in his cap really.
Shrewd move by Pardew though. ;)

I was 'watching the match' and I wondered why I didn't see anything of him - lol.

I though Stevenage looked pretty good from what I saw of them, the looked well above the league they were in.
Looked like a top side in fact. Ie passing it around a bit.

delighted he got the 3 goals, I think I've said for years that he had the potential...very few Irish players have scored 3 in a game! Lets hope he can keep it up, still much more in him I'm telling you.

You said at some stage that McGugans father was Irish as well, livehead, is that definitely the case? There is no mention of his availability anywhere other than on here, strange for a player having a decent season at a good level.

With Andy Carroll now almost certainly going to Liverpool for a ridiculous sum of money, opportunities knocks for Leon Best to push on become their main striker. To date, Pardew appears to have confidence in the lad.

CraftyToePoke

True, but maybe Carrols move depends on Newcastle getting a replacement also, but it does look like Leon Best will have his shot at being a prem striker, and good luck to him, it will be intersting to watch how he does.

Ameobi is favored over Best as the main striker, but the two will probably play together barring Pardew bringing in another striker. Neither has the greatest scoring record, but Ameobi is better winning balls in the air and holding it up. Then again Shola is injury prone and Pardew isn't too happy about him deciding to play for Nigeria, so you never know, especially if Best finds a good run of form. Personally, I hope they forge a good parternship because I'm a fan of both.

EDIT: If they bring in Carlton Cole (as it seems they may) they'll have three strikers (four if you count Nile Ranger, though he is built somewhat more on pace) that play very similar games.

was he injured or just exhausted?
Phil Thompson said he'd put in a good shift, but his fitness wasn't up to a full match just yet

according to the live text commentary, it was just cramp

I could not believe the score last time I looked it was 4-0 and it ends up 4-4.
That is some turn around.
Lots of goals scored in the PL today, it's a record apparently, the lowest scoring game had 3 goals and there are two 8's and a 7
with Wolves v Man U to come. I must see if I can get a stream for that, will probably end up 0-0 though. :p

It looked like he was suffering from cramp. What a match. I thought Best played well even when Newcastle were down 4-0. Never hid and kept plugging away. Needs to stop straying offside but good shift today.

Ya, Andy Keogh called up in his place. Funny though as Keogh wasn't on the standby list and Stokes who was, was not called in.

just got Newcastle's 2nd against Brum tonight.

Newcastle goal: Jonas Gutierrez is the provider again. This time he delivers the ball to the far post for Leon Best who out-jumps Roger Johnson to nod in from three yards.

Don't think that's his fault. He plays effectively as a lone striker for Newcastle, players in that position are more likely than anyone to be subbed. He's done brilliantly since January, has taken his chance to shine after being ignored for a long time, and long may this form continue.

paul_oshea
17/02/2011, 2:22 PM
Ah in fairness I dont think it has anything to do with Shane in fairness SF.

I hope it isn't a 5 month period of form though. From the amount I have seen of him, granted its clips, he has shown strenght , tenacity, agility and power in the air, and a good finish. This is the old fashioned English Division 1 striker. If you get the ball to him in a good position he will more often than not finish. I hope he can keep his performance at 100%.

From what i have seen about best is he is a very good finisher in the air and on the ground, and he has got chances with newcastle.

However I don't really see us as the team that create the chances for the out and out striker like leon. So i dont really think he fits our system as is, which is a shame.

6 goals in his first proper season in the premiership so far without really featuring before christmas is a great achievement
