Fingal is not an area or a community it is an electoral area or CC area encompassing a huge amount of North Dublin Suburbs, I live in Fingal and the fact of this rarely enters my head, I'm a Dub thats it, same way as someone who lives in the Dunlaoire/Rathdown or South Dublin CC areas are dubs
Fingal will struggle to get any kind of Local Community Identity
I think block has hit the nail on the head if there is no local indenty then it will be near impossible to build a fan base, at best it would take many years to do so and the question is will the finances there for a long haul.
I dont think ive ever heard of someone discribe themselves as a fingalian

Add to that the fact that Dublin teams struggle to tap into the sort of local/community identity that regional clubs can when they're doing well (e.g. Derry, Cork, Sligo, Galway), and I just can't see how a brand new team plopped by magic into an area with no coherent identity in a city that already has too many teams - most of whom have struggled to expand their occassional fan-base - and I just can't see how Fungus will succeed ?
Plus 'SFFC' is a sh!t acronym....... :D

Thats fair enough I suppose. I don't know a lot about the area so I was just assuming.
When the GAA were considering breaking up the Dublin County team into 2 teams. Were Fingal going to be one half or what? It obviously didn't go ahead. Were the reasons above something to do with the fact that it didn't go ahead?

Correct! that was the plan. but on the contrary the reason's above were why they were trying to do it in the first place
the counselors in fingal have had a hairbrained scheme to make Fingal the official 33rd county of Ireland for some years now and the GAA team split was just another step on the way to an official split from Dublin in their eye's

It's not even a pipe dream it's about as likely as any given Bond Villan's attempt at world Domination it is a ridiculous idea thought up by ridiculous people like this (http://www.labour.ie/michaelodonovan/) and this (http://www.fingalcoco.ie/YourLocalCouncil/Councillors/Mulhuddart/)

There are no communist councillors on Fingal CC, but the Fingal Uber Alles march has been led for some time by FF, FG and senior 'county' employees.

I was gonna say that the SP aren't commies, but anyway.. how much support and backing are they getting from FCC? Is there a website that outlines their ideas and plans at all?
Oh, and Drogheda aren't a Dublin team.. sure didn't they beat us in the final;)

How can you support a team that still doesn't actually exist and was only schedule for birth in March 2008 ??
Seriously - who's they're starting 11 ? What's their home and away colours ? Where can you buy a scarf or replica top ?
And does anyone really care...?

Good man John - you're now founder memebr of the official No.1 Spouting Fungus Supporter's Club ! :D
By the way - can you order a load of kit and some scarves as your first duty in the role ? Including enough for the team across c. 32 games. Maybe have a word with Carrolls and see if they've got a gap in their range for Dublin soccer attire. There's a good man...

I see they are advertising for someone to run the club. Looks like they will be employed by FCC, thats interesting.

Very hard to make a comprehensive argument on their boards using words of less than 5 letters and ending every sentance with 'boy'. Anyway, I think they are fed up with me now. (But I'll be back!);)

I think you'll find they've no problem with outsiders. Plenty of soccer and rugby fans post on an fear rua. However you started talking about the grab all association in your very first post so what did you expect? Didn't really seem like you were that interested in discussing the issue the thread was about. As someone not in possession of the full facts at present I'll keep my own counsel, however it does seem at first glance that the Sporting Fingal concept is somewhat of a new departure for Irish soccer. If there is a precedent for a county council becoming involved with an individual sports club in this fashion I'd be very interested to hear about it.

I find it very hard to understand how some people on this forum imply -- or even suggest -- that GAA followers are narrow-minded and introverted when statements like that are dished out.
I'll probably be chastised now, but I sometimes find it ironic, to say the least, when people are falling over themselves to crassly generalise the GAA as 'bigots' without really understanding why.

Does anybody know what day of the week SF will be playing because as far as I'm aware the floodlights in Morton Stadium are not up to ELOI standard.

No fans, no place, no history, no reason.
The game is trying to widen its appeal and, arguably, has started to turn things round from an absolutely disastrous position. Now this.
The public has a choice between genuine, historic clubs, like Bohs, Pats, Rovers and Shels, and the makey-uppy, Mickey Mouse projects of people who should be providing education, health services, and answers to climate change.
My hope is that people, confronted with and provoked by something as falsely based and ludicrously titled as 'Sporting Fingal', are spurred on to seek out the real deal in their football heritage.
100% agree.
From an outsider's perspective it doesn't seem right that an artificially-created plastic club with a ludicrous name should be picked from the ether and given a place in the LOI.
Surely there are other clubs around the country with a bit of tradition and a bit of support that would bring more to the league?
Will the coaching and administration staff of Sporting Fingal be employed by the council?

If so there initials should be CCFC (as in County Council Football Club)
don't how that suggestion will go down with posters on here from the other CCFC though

Look up my post and point out examples where I specifically accused you of it. What I actually accused you of was making an ill-informed, narrow-minded outburst.

As far as I know, No, Letterkenny did not apply.
They originally applied, but withdrew their application. Fanad United applied but were turned down.

I kind of agree. I've only skimmed the thread linked to above, but there seemed to be a fairly reasonable reaction of "why is council money backing a pro club?"

Jinxy: what's your problem? Fingal are offering employment opportunities that the GAA can't match as they are an amateur body - unless the taxpayer throws a few bob their players' way.
Besides, organised football was a part of Irish sporting culture before the GAA was invented so the reality is that football is more 'Irish' than all GAA games.
Get used to it: football is the Irish sport, it's what the kids want to play, especially as we become a more multicultural society.
Besides, how many counties play hurling with any seriousness? And what about handball? If the GAA are serious about promoting gaelic games why are they letting their best two activities die a slow death? Hurling and handball are great games that are uniquely Irish yet they're allowed to wallow while gaelic football - which is a poor mix of rugby and football and has more to do with handbags outside the chipper on a Saturday night - gets promoted to the hilt.

:( What a frighteningly terrible and irrelevant post!
The issue is that a local council is embarking on a fantastical self-serving crusade. By all means build masses of facilities to encourage sport in the community, but why the need to start a senior club before all that is done, a stadium built, or public demand for it?
You'd think they'd know to put the horse before the cart out Fingal way. :D

It seems to me that the FAI could be playing a very intelligent game. If they have engaged with the local councils with the view to providing modern sports facilities for the public while promoting Eircom league clubs as anchor tenants using these facilities then I do not see very much wrong with it. The facilities at the Regional Sports Centre in Waterford will improve dramatically this year while the facilities being proposed in Tallaght, Fingal and Limerick all sound promising and have all been earmarked for use by Eircom league cubs.

Easy tiger! It's a legitimate question. If there's a legitimate answer by all means fill me in. No need to go off on a tangent about the GAA. Close your eyes and imagine another poster asked the question if it makes it easier for you. Would your response still start with the words "Whats your problem?"
