I have to disagree about Evans. Houllier brought them up a notch. Although they were consistenly up near the top of the table in Evans' time, they never really threatened Man Utd. In 96/97 they were never going to catch Man Utd, much like Houllier's team in 01/02 despite the fact that they finished with 80 points.
I've used stats to show they did in fact threaten United - leading the table in February, having pretty much a one off showdown for the title with four games to go (which they lost). Houllier brought Liverpool a huge step back in his first season (seventh), then back to where Evans had them (seven points off the title), then another huge step back.
Houllier had the advantage that fourth in his time was enough for Champions' League money; Evans never finished below fourth but second was the target then. With that money, he could have done even better.

Houllier was more or less responsible for restructering French youth football and setting up the academy at Clarefontain, was he not? That produced the players who won in 98 and 2000. England tried to copy it with Lilleshall (sp?) but i'm not sure it worked so well.
You are correct about Clairefontain, Houllier was instrumental in the development of Henry, Trezequet et al.
However Lilleshall was set up in the early 80s. The first England u21s to come out of there were hammered 4-1 in Cork with Quinner getting a hat-trick.
If we cant get Mourinho, Scolari or Capello (which we wont) its Houllier for me. Million miles ahead of O'Leary, Aldridge, Brady, Kinnear (FFS).

What about Houllier with Liam Brady as his number 2? It seems crazy to me that someone with Bradys knowledge of the game has no job in Irish football.

Someone like Houllier wouldn't want or need an Irish assistant foisted on him, and Brady's unlikely to want the job. He's quite happy with his role as Arsenal's U21 manager and his media gigs on the side.

He could still do the Arsenal U21 and the Ireland assistants job at the same time. Chris Hughton did it with Brian Kerr. Also if Houllier took over the job I wouldnt be surprised if he left after two years and then maybe you can give Brady the full-time job. Thats what they should have done with Staunton.

Brady's current role is not Arsenal U21 manager. He is Director of the Arsenal Academy whose main role is the development of young players. The Academy have an U18 team and I think you will find that team is coached by former Arsenal player Steve Bould. Brady does not have any hands on involvement with team management or coaching at any level.

I think it would be crazy to rule Houllier out of the running. The man has won trophies wherever he's been. Granted at Liverpool they may not have been fantastic to watch under him but he certainly had them very well organised which would make a change from the Stan era.
Not saying he's the man for the job but it would be silly to discount him offhand if he was interested.

Irrelevant. That's Don Givens job, and will remain his job. Houllier would be responsible for getting the first team to tournaments. If young players come in, then fine, but he has to get them to play well for the senior side, and qualify us for championships. Staunton brought young players in by the truckload, and look where it's got us. Bring players in gradually, and let them blend into the team. Playing kids with no international experience for the sake of it, is merely going to continue the situation we're putting up with atm.

Well some of the kids that Staunton didn't even have ANY experience, let alone international experience.

Please let your rumopur be true!!! Like him or not he is easily the highest calibre of manager that has stated he wants the Irish job , plus he has experienced success very recently. id take him in a flash and would like if he could get someone like Houghton on board as his assistant

I backed Houllier at 40/1. Not because I want Houllier as manager ( I don't) but because I believed that Delaney would go for someone like him. I can't see him commanding the respect of our current squad for an entire campaign.

On 25th of October, he reported that he would wanted to be in contention to get an International job so reported that he would like to get the Ireland job. The FAI have now put him in the top list for the next managerial job, but he is quoted as saying "I am too good for that job.

I don't know how I feel about it tbh although I'm sure I've said elsewhere that I'd be happy for it. :D
As for the Wikipedia references, I wouldn't be bothered by them and they do seem to be unsubstantiated.
I believe Houillier would be respected by the vast majority of the squad but I don't believe he would pander to larger ego's in the squad either.
I'd take him ahead of O'Leary, Souness, Venables, Robson, Dalglish, Atkinson, of that much I'm certain. Who would come in on his ticket would be interesting. As I said before, why Heighway (or even more so, Kerr) hasn't been approached for the Under21 gig I'll never know.

I'm torn between the relation of someone's work colleague and an uncited wikipedia reference. Who can I trust at a time like this:confused:
Can someone just fill in this blank for me: I should put all my money on ________ to be the next Ireland manager. :(

That's fair enough Jerry and I can understand the skepticism, and I even asked a mod before posting what I did. Usually I wouldn't take much heed in passerby comments but this guy I work I've known for a while and know he has a relative on the FAI BOm so for him to say it to me made me take notice.
Having said that it probably won't happen making me look like a bigger plank.:o

For what it's worth, I think there's a lot more substance in what you've been told than the bit that some randomer put up on wikipedia :D. Especially when the FAI are notorious for putting out leaks and will want to assess the public mood on any prospective candidate.
Here's the full sentence (in bold) that was added by whoever put up the "too good for that job" quote (later edited to what's there now).

If Houllier has been approached and is interested then he is a cert for the job. I hated the way his Liverpool teams played football. But then again I hated the way Boro played under Charlton. But a winning Irish team trumps all my purist bull****!

It sounds like the MON thing from last time. Indirect approaches. Expect Houllier's brother (if he has one) to pop up somewhere within the next few days claiming "something". This is typical FAI stuff. JD decides lets get Houllier. Most of the FAI agrees. And then the leaks begin that Houllier is the choice. Houllier meantime is doing the job he is employed to do. Turns down Delaney indirectly as he was contacted indirectly. Then we are back to square one. Pure speculation but on previous FAI form close to what is really happening.

Houllier just said on French TV that he would not be the next Irish Manager. Houllier was working on Canal plus for the Champions League and he was asked the question and he denied he was going to be the Irish manager.
I would reckon that someone in the FAI has been contacting him about it and thats where the new story is coming out of.

The problems here is that Paddy Power's odds were higher than Betfair's. When that happens people can back Houllier on Paddy Power, lay him on Betfair and make a guaranteed profit. They'll just wait for the market to settle before taking any more bets.

How much did you put on it? If you put, lets say, a tenner on it you could have guaranteed yourself a profit of around €120 by laying him at 2/1 on betfair. You should always be thinking of laying when you get a price like that.

In the event of Houllier getting the job, the mere boast of "I got him at 40/1" carries all the kudos.
Noely should not disclose how much he has punted for fear of getting pestered with begging letters in his inbox.
