Saw the Ipswich result over the weekend. Lost 7-1. For a second I thought Keane was still the manager but then I remembered it was Paul Jewell, the man whom Giles (supported by Dunphy needless to say) went over to interview for the Irish job off his own bat. Trap may not be everyone's favourite but I think we had a lucky escape there.

Given that Steve Staunton had previously been in charge, and that Steve Coppell was the only manager to throw his hat into the ring, Paul Jewell actually looked like a half-decent candidate in November 2007. We would have accepted anyone with even the merest scent of a managerial career at that stage, and thought of it as a step up. Dark days.

Just had a chat with my Korean friends about Guus Hiddink, and apparently when he took over, everyone was really angry that he tried to make them play in a formation that was alien to Korean football, and that he dropped some established favourites that couldn't 'fit' into the system, and that he faced a lot of media and public opposition up until the 2002 World Cup. All sounds familiar.

Much as it chokes me, even with Stan being an An Lu man, Jewell's managerial record in English club football is better...
