Super. Was it that game or the other home game against them (under Charlton) that wasn't live on telly? Remember listening on the radio; Packie Bonner was getting dazed under the new-fangled floodlights (must have been 1994 then actually)

It was 94. Some issue at the time meant that RTE could only show 1 of Ireland's 5 home group games, so they decided to ignore Liechtenstein, as indeed did Charlton himself, who went off to watch another group game that night. The issue was sorted out before the next home game, and Ireland's remaining home games were all shown live.

The reason I searched for it was after reading the bit in a Jonathan Wilson book about Lobonovsky, the famous USSR/Kiev manager.

Who are the commentators on the ESPN games? Macedonia 1-1 away and Romania 1-1 at home. The Cork lad in particular I can't tell if he's taking the **** out of Americans (in the onion bag) or out of the Cork accent.

That annoying whine is Tommy Smyth (from Louth, not Cork). He's a complete joke but ESPN still use him (he was on their panel with Michael Ballack during the European Championships this summer). He's lived in New York since the 60s and managed to get a football commentating gig during the 70s and 80s. Remarkably, he still knows next to nothing about the game but has made a career out of stupid cliches like "back of the old onion bag". The Guardian did a piece on him a few years ago "possibly the most hated football commentator in history" (http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2009/apr/15/tommy-smyth-us-soccer-espn).

For my part, if I could thank that post from East Terracer more than once, I would. Dunno why most of the LoI players have Dutch (or Luxembourgese?) flags beside them though. And that's a serious Brazil side; fair dues to the LoI to keep it to 2-0 for 70 minutes. Also, I'm impressed that I immediately latched on to the two most annoying aspects of Smyth per the Guardian article (the accent and the aul onion bag). :)

I'm hoping to find a youtube clip from the "Green is the Colour" documentary last year where Mick McCarthy describes with pride how he holds the record for the most fouls in one world cup tournament or match. He goes on about kicking Hagi up and down the pitch in the Romania match in Genoa. Can anyone help me out? Thanks.

Had to double-check my memory was still functioning OK there: "... Wait, Tommy Coyne was still playing for us in 2004, and scored a goal in a game against Holland?!" :p

I always re-call the front cover for the game FIFA '96 having come from that match. It featured Jason McAteer jostling and chasing down a ball with one of the De Boer brothers:
