we should have either him or morrison in the squad. Both give us something different up front and It's clear by now that the Doyle/ Keane partnership isn't working.

I want to see the Doyle and Keane partnership under Trappatoni for a few games before I will say its not working, it didnt work very well under Staunton but that maybe down to the lack of proper coaching on the training pitch

Rubbish I thought they looked very good together against Wales and again against Colombia so do not agree with you there.

Rubbish I thought they looked very good together against Wales and again against Colombia so do not agree with you there.

While I get your point, they looked dismal together for an entire qualifying game.

Two good performances in meaningless games does little to change my confidence in them as a pairing.

Now, that said, perhaps they are finally finding some chemistry together. Another issue is service from midfield, which was non-existent for the most part last campaign.

If Andy Reid is healthy, perhaps he will get the most out of Doyle and Keane as a partnership. We already know Keane links up well with Reid, we just need another attacking player to join those two to really make us dangerous.

Seems he's gonna be loaned to middlesborough, newcastle or reading. Middlesborough would be my hope, assuming he'd get game time

Not good news though. Thought he was going to get a regular run as a premiership starter.

Hopefully not Reading anyway as he will restrict the chances of our strikers there.

Nah don't think it'd good news either, although to be honest if he's used effectively at middlesborough I think it could end up being better for us.

I'd put my faith in southgate over brown to be honest

Thought he was going to get a regular run as a premiership.

A player of very weak technical ability - can cause trouble when the ball is in the air (as seen against South Africa), but needs another dimension to his game to be a Premiership regular.

The ball is invariably just booted aimless up and down the pitch in the Championship so he should be capable of commanding some first team football there - more so with Reading and Middlesborough than Newcastle.

Looks like a deal to Boro is inevitable.

Middlesbrough will delay a loan deal for Republic of Ireland international Caleb Folan – in order to have him available for an important game against north-east rivals Newcastle United in December.

Folan had been expected to join Gareth Southgate’s side earlier this week on a three-month loan with a view to a permanent transfer in January.

But the deal may not go through until Monday, so that Folan will be eligible for the trip to St James’s Park on December 19th.

Ahead of the 26-year-old’s departure, Hull City boss Phil Brown admitted that Folan had failed to impress in his first-team opportunities this season.

He said: “We talked long and hard over the last two weeks over who we would let go. We always look to make decisions with a view to progress and as a result, we’ve allowed Caleb to talk with Middlesbrough.

“We’ve always been looking for someone to finish off the work of a more and more promising squad and now more than ever, there are a lot of players on the front line competing for places. Caleb didn’t score in his four games and didn’t really look like scoring either.”

What a complete joke of a manager Phil Brown is, imagine saying that in the press about any player let alone one still in your squad.

Folan is a strange player, he wont score goals at the highest level, but for us that will not be his job. As long as he can be in the squad and come on and maybe do what he did in Bari he is worth a place in the squad. I do think that leon best has more potential though as a player with similar type physical attributes.

rebelmusic

Sums up for me how much of a tool brown is, Folan for me is prefominately a support striker and will probably always have more assists than goals regardless of who he's playing for.
I'd say for him aswell that his energy levels are great and he terrorises center backs when they have the ball.

i wouldnt compare best to folan btw, folan is a niall quinn type player whereas best is much more of a from the feet player. For me best should be replacing shane long in the pecking order, not folan

I can explain what Niall Quinn and Cas were about as players and their role in the Irish team.
With Folan I have the feeling he has not found his niche in the scheme of things, moving to a new club in a lower division is not a bad move for him.
Cas spent plenty of time in the lower divisions.

I saw Leon Best live on Tuesday and it was all about his aerial ability & sheer strength. The 2 big Sheff United CBs really struggled with him all day. Long is much more mobile than Best, but nowhere near as strong.

Its a funny one alright. I believe that Hull are already resigned to get relegated this season and with the team they have and Brown as manager then they are probably right.
They have decided to cash in on any valuable players that they have i.e. Turner to Sunderland for agood amount of cash. It actually looks good (to me) that they can get 2 million for Folan when other clubs know that they are keen to sell what players they can. Brown is probably trying to paint one picture but I would say the real picture is something different.

a touch of the newcastle fan syndrome by the looks of it - no matter who you are, you pick players that can dig you out of the Championship - Folan can definitely do that. I think it will be a decent signing for Boro. I hope he gets a regular start fairly quickly.

He's a sap without a doubt. Tries to be the whole "I tells it like it is. Some people don't like that but that's just me. Deal with it" persona, like an auditionee for Big Brother.... Then turns up on Goals on Sunday, on the couch with a Pink Jumper draped around his shoulders the whole time.... Indoors... On a couch... A bit too self congratulatory too. Don't like him at all.

As good a move for Folan as you could expect really. I don't rate him though.

I don't rate the guy myself but obviously Trap does so it is a big loss. He seems to be the guy who comes on with half an hour to go and tries to get his head involved in the long ball play.

Gary Doherty could still do a job for us there. Cillian Sheridan maybe? Clinton Morrison would probably be the best striker not called up but he won't get a call up for obvious reasons.

I notice he has 6 goals in 10 games this season, 2 top scorer in the

It's a pity alright considering how well he did in the away game against Italy particularly but Best looked pretty sharp against South Africa so hopefully he can provide a similar service if required.

Doherty playing CB for League One, Norwich and not even making the bench from what I can see.

Sheridan yet to find the net for bottom of the table championship side Plymouth (one for the future).

How are these sensible options?

What are the obvious reasons for Morrission not getting called up - have I missed something?

Skysports said that Folan's move to Boro will be made permanent in January- probably for the best given the comments from both sides.

100% behind Folan on this, Brown is a joke of a manager, and to say the stuff he said about Folan is totally unprofessional.

i too would like to know what the obvious reasons are. his strike record (at club and country level) is pretty good.

a lot better than folan for example.

i can only imagine he (like reid, ireland) had some sort of falling out with people in the FAI / other players in the squad.

Not sure i would agree with you on that one SkStu,

with the current problems in QPR at the moment and that they are going through managers like knives go through butter. They have had about 10 different managers in the last 3 years, so i would imagine that came into calebs mind when he decided to turn them down. I realise it was only a loan move but if a club doesnt have consistency with managers then a player cant be blamed for being cautious about signing for them.

Im presuming Mick harford or Paul Hart made the offer - Hart managed to hold on for his job for just 1 month, how long Harford?

I think its probably best that Caleb try to resurrect his career at a more stable club

Easy C scores two today. First he didnt know too much about.

Having been credited with the first, Caleb Folan grabs his second - and there's no doubting this one is his. Set through by Richard Garcia, the striker takes a touch and clips it over David James and into the corner. Advantage Hull again.

Footballs a strange game...one minute you're a goal up and Wigan are headed for a nil all draw and the you're losing and Wigan are 1-0 up. Am happy for Kanu though (and that Zinedine wasn't at fault for the goals).

Robbie tends to drop so deep sometimes no matter who he is playing for that in effect it almost seems to be his position anyways.

It sounds interested, but Trapattoni is not going to move Keane out of the striker role, and he's not going to remove one of the defensive central midfielders.

Judging by the way Folan unsettled the Italians in Bari he has an awful lot to offer a team which has never evolved in attack since the departure of Niall Quinn. Much as we like to kid ourselves that we play a bit of football in the final third, and in all honesty we are better at it now than perhaps any time in the past, we are still more effective playing to a big man.

Imagine Robbie picking up the pieces from Folan's knock downs and Doyle's passes into space, with Duff and McGeady or Lawrence hovering around. I know it's been said here that Trap won't change his midfield / forward line but it would be nice if he did. Stating the obvious but the more goals Ireland can score the better off we'll be.

irishfan86
24/03/2010, 2:49 AM
In terms of a starting position, Folan will only get there if Doyle is absent -- that is who he is competing with for a place. The only time we'll see Robbie, Doyler and Folan on the pitch together is if we're down a goal or more.

Even though Doyle is a better individual, I'd be tempted to play Folan ahead of Doyle, as Robbie elevates his game tremendously when paired with a target man.
