View Full Version : Owls sack Paul Sturrock

Disappointed. 2 and a half years in to the job and Wednesday are 20 places higher than where he found them. A club with a history of sacking its managers and yet no success follows. They sack Paul Jewell who then leads his next team to promotion to the Premiership:rolleyes: .
I had a lot of time for Paul Sturrock and am sad to see him go. Slight plus is that he had Whelan transfer listed so perhaps the new man might keep him.
Is there any managerial talent out there at the moment I wonder? Leeds haven't got anyone yet and I suspect Wednesday will be behind them in the pecking order for the likes of Curbishly etc. Wonder what John Sheridan is doing these days?

In addition he had just signed a long term contract so I am sure they must have to pay that up. That was only signed about a month ago. Not a good way of running a football club tyhere it seems.

Isn't Sheridan managing Oldham with a degree of (relative) success?

Absolutely ridiculous sacking IMO. No money and for the first time since he got there had no injury concerns on Weds night with a full squad to choose from. Looks like the experienced players let him down a bagful against Colchester. I heard on the radio on Weds night that a lot of Wednesdayites blamed the players for the performance and 99% were behind the manager. But a result like that would have prompted him to clear out the dead wood as he subsequently proclaimed after the game. Looks like Mr Allen was going to freak out that Sturrock may have wanted to buy players in January and cost him some money. For once Wednesday fans have a realistic outlook on their football and realise that having a manager employed on a long term basis is good for the club. This sacking will put the club back again. The board needed to trust Sturrock and his 5 year plan.
Disappointed to see Sturrock go to be honest, always thought he was good manager who was able to get a lot out of very little. As you said Owlsfan we have a history of sacking managers (I'd love to run over whoever on the board set the Trevor Francis sacking in motion) but they should have taken into account the injuries we've had to our team, and in particular up front this season. Hopefully Whelan being taken off the transfer list will be the silver lining in this story though.
Personally I want an ex-player like one of the two Nigels (Worthington and Pearson), or John Sheridan brought back to manage the club, would love to see Chris Waddle being put on the coaching staff too, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see

Well there's always Brian Kerr available.

According to our chairman he's being sounded out for the Limerick hotseat though*

Nigel Worthington - why didn't I think of him? I'd put money on it now.

Just checked - correct as ever. Not sure how Oldham are doing though and it would cost money to buy out his contract.
Surprised Sheridan didn't get the Irish gig though ahead of Stan with that experience;)

Worthington commented yesterday on how he has a great deal of respect for the club and although t\he has not contacted the club, and they have not contacted him he'd be very interested to talk to the board. Honestly I think he's our man

They approached Burnley to talk to Cotteril but were refused permission:rolleyes:
Interesting stat on the Championship this morning. 15 managers have been sacked since the start of last season and the average tenure of a Championship manager is 1 year two months:eek:
Fingers crossed Hull, Barnsley and Southend continue to lose. I expect Leeds to pull out of their slump. Butler looked awful for them against Luton.
Anyone see young Irishman Billy Clarke come on for Ipswich and score one and make another? Looked good. Alan Lee also got one as well.

He'll be relieved of his duties by Christmas by that second rate shambles of a club, and oh how I'll laugh

I heard on the grapevine it might be Gary McAllister.
I'd say Gary Mac will wind up at Leeds to be honest. Also heard today that Bryan Robson has applied for the job, so so far we have
Alex McLeish
Bryan Robson
Nigel Pearson
Nigel Worthington
Gary Megson
Gary McAllister
Graham Taylor
and
Jim Sheridan
all being touted for the job. Not a bad short list all in all to be honest. I'd be looking at bringing in Worthington or McLeish myself. Decent track records, and good man managers the pair, which is what we need right now

Jim Sheridan, the sports commentator:p ? Hope he doesn't get it;) . John Sheridan is doing an ok job at Oldham but certainly doesn't warrant the big gig yet. Otherwise I'd take any of the other 3 ex-players in Pearson, Worthington or Megson

John Sheridan I assume. Doing ok at Oldham but nothing special.
I'd take any of the ex-Wendies other than him (Pearson, Worthington or Megson)

Lol was trying to think why Jim and not John Sheridan would have popped into my head, but outside of some deep rooted love for that sports commentator (and my how deep rooted that must be) I can't think of any! :p

Fingers crossed Owls get someone decent.

Thank Christ there's no Blades fans around to see us tripping up over our words. Still we could always bring up Waddle's screamer in the 93 Cup Semis again I suppose, I doubt that will ever get old! :)

I see Denis Wise has gone to Leeds. If Wednesday had got him, he would have been a Wise Owl :D
Latest betting is on Brian Laws.
Pearson has become the Newcastle Assistant aswell so we can count him out

Brian Robson is now the bookies' favourite
Yeah I heard it's down to Robson, Megson and Craig Levin. although since Levin is gone to Dundee Utd it might just be down to Megson and Robson. Is this the first time that someone has gone to church and prayed for Gary Megson to take over their club?

Can you believe that result last night? Down twice and score in the 45th and 91st minutes to beat Palace. The team that has spent a generation conceding last minute goals turns the corner. If Carlsberg........

Tell me about it, I was flicking from the Champions League to Sky Sports every two minutes (annoyed the hell out of my brother :p ) and when I saw MacLean's goal go up I think I started that 'sit down mourinho' chant aimed at my brother, who oddly enough professed his liking for palace when they were 2-1 up....good times, now if only we can keep up this mini-run we are in and start moving up the table.
Heard this morning that it is now down to Brian Laws and Robson for the managers position, don't know what to believe in these rumours anymore, but I just know that Allen, tit that he is, is going to hire Robson because he thinks Robson will be able to get some big names here

Maybe he'll take some of the S'thorpe Irish up with him?

Laws for Wednesday and Sturrock for Swindon. Apparently, Sturrock has it in his contract should Weds approach him again he is free to join them without compensation to be paid to Swindon!

I don't know about that, I was going to say why would we want him back after sacking him, but then again we are the club that gave him a new 4 year deal 3 weeks before sacking him

I would say Sturrock is holding out for someone to replace Allen as chairman. He wants to go back to Hillsborough, thats why he wants a clause inserted into the Swindon contract.
just saw this...

Hmmmmm. Whether these appointments work out are in the laps of the Gods. Some modest success with S****horpe, having been previously sacked by Grimsby. Not exactly a great c.v. and I would still have preferred for Wednesday to keep Sturrock but who knows? I remember him as a useful player for Forest.
At least he has some breathing space in the relegation battle for the moment.
Yeah its debatable as to whether this guy can take us on towards promotion. He seems like a steady enough manager, but we really need someone who can work a bit of magic and get us up around the playoffs, thats why I was thinking a Nigel Worthington or Gary Megson would have been a better option, guys with proven track records of getting promoted

3 points away from the play-offs and 7 from the relegation zone. I'll be continuing to keep my eye on the latter for the time being.
Same, the last time a Wednesday team had my hopes up we scapegoated Di Canio in the interest of the British Tabloids and started our long freefall. That said though a result away to Coventry this weekend might start turning a few heads in our direction again

Di Canio was the last decent player to play for Wednesday. If one of Man U's best players had pushed a referee, Ferguson would have made a few mournful sounds and then supported the player to the hilt. Wednesday hung Di Canio out to dry and he walked as a consequence but the team was in decline anyway, starting with Francis, with great impetus by Pleat and then by Wilson.
Unless a big benefactor comes in, the Owls are doomed no longer ever to fly high again (if they ever did but they did soar slightly for a while).

He didn't have a problem chastising Cantona over the kung fu kick.

United gave him a long ban before the FA got in there with their action, don't know which was the longer.

That United ban on Cantona was put there to try to head off the FA from giving him a season long ban or something ridiculous. Plus it gave Fergie the ammo he needed to attack the FA when they did impose a more severe ban on Cantona by saying that 'United had already dealt with it white noise white noise', the typical garbage that comes out of that mans mouth.
Back to Wednesday though, I remember when the board sacked Francis, stating that a new manager with fresh ideas was needed to take the club that extra mile, and then they hired David Pleat of all people. I also remember realising at that moment that I may have made a mistake becoming attached to Wednesday :p

What a day today. Take the lead at Coventry. Then score an o.g. and have two players sent off and lose 3-1. The joys of following the Owls

I see Barnsley have sacked Andy Ritchie who was on Wednesday's list of potential managers

What can I say, watching the Premiership years on Sky One has made me all nostalgic for the good old days
Maybe they could get the guys the FAI got and relegate Reading, Wigan, Watford, Fulham, Sheffield United and Portsmouth :)

Replace Portsmouth with Blackburn and we're in business. Throw the 6 spots available to Wednesday, Forest, Birmingham, Wolves, West Brom and Norwich and we'd have a model for the FAI to work on, and also a case to point to when they shaft UCD out of the Premier. Still lads it's for the greater Galway good so we'd better stop moaning about it.
Oh and I left Leeds out of the 6 on account of them being a shower of ****s :p

Birmingham? Fupp off man. Why in the name of God would you want a little club like that up? Derby... Burnley... Preston... even Leicester would be preferable.
