Spartak Moscow stated when they bought McGeady that it was their intent to sell him on once a good offer came in.

I was gonna do a little digging around to see if there were any quotes from Spartak around the time Zenit were interested, the first thing I came across was this - so I just gave up :D

The former midfielder of Celtic, Aiden McGeady, at the moment in Spartak Moscow, is so appreciated by Zenit of Luciano Spalletti. According to Daily Record the Italian coach will be ready to give to McGeady 120 million pounds every week.

Spalletti must have an account in Zimbabwe.

And that Aiden just needs to send him £250,000 to release the funds. ;)

Although they were hammered last night a Rangers fans said he played fantastic last night. He must have been good if one of that mob is saying it!

Are any of that Spartak team in the Russian side?

Don;t think so - Dzubya could be there or thereabouts come the autumn though.

Aiden was outstanding against Porto. Set up two glorious chances in the first half and produced a piece of skill which was worth the admission alone (walked in from the edge of the area and totally bamboozled the Brazilian defender with a deft touch). Unfortunately the keeper pulled off an outstanding save from Aiden's shot.

Started agains Anzhi this afernoon. Decent stream here:
http://realtvsport.com/channel-6.php

Currently 1-1 , he's had some decent touches/runs and had a shot go narrowly wide, Anzhi equalising immediately after. Only turned on late, no idea if he had a hand in Spartak's goal.
Conditions seem terrible and they're playing into an absolute gale of Cahirciveen proportions. The Spartak goalie looks "dodgy".

Just saw ht highlights, no part in either goal. Of the stat graphs he was the least involved player on the pitch by far, and some other stat that I couldn't prehend had him as an average. The heat graph for where play concentrated, showed his (the right flank) was the least involved in the half.

Oh and both keepers could be on winners here.

This game is nuts. McGeady shouldered the full back who stayed on the ground, ball came back to McgEady good shot, good save. Then the player on the ground calls over the ref, points at McGeady and the ref gives out to him for something he didn't see! All the while the Anzhi centre half is warming Weillitons torso by rubbing him up and down. Nuts.

Spartak beaten 2-1. McGeady played better than most of his team-mates. Let's see how he gets on with a new manager because Karpin is gonna be shot soon. McGeady was double marked constantly, had a couple of decent efforts in the second half. The game itself was a bit touched in the "Irish" sense. One mcGeady cross was described in Russian words as "not decent", whatever that meant in English!

Karpin was all over the media complaining about the club, supporters, backers etc. He's looking to be kicked out but the club can't afford the payoff. He did a decent job with the side but when a manager is "elected" by the hooligan section, you kind of know you're in trouble.

Charlie Darwin

Well at least they didn't shoot him.

He was hoping he'd be begged to stay on. He did the same at the end of last season, he told the board (or the 2 people who put money in the club) back me or sack me, while he organised a fan rally at the Luzhniki. The "board" gave him a new contract with an out clause. He has one of the best squads in the league and couldn't put a dent in the Zenit side. He's luck to have lasted so long.

Reading in the Daily Record today there are calls for him to be made captain. He's been superb for them especially the last game where he set-up the winner.

Big test this weekend against CSKA. McGeady is a little doubtful to start (he shifted a couple of knocks against Nalchik) but it could be paper talk.

Thats some amount of fouls he drew, one of their players saw red for a second booking too.

Great assist for the goal. He's obviously high on confidence, will be great for him to build on the performance in March and help us get the victory we need in Skopje.

Spartak beat bitter (is there any other?) rivals CSKA with a late goal, assist from Aiden, but it hardly qualifies as an assist.
Short video here of the goal and a post match interview with Karpin,
"this was a game between good v evil...." :)

Well, he'd get assist points for that if he was playing in Fantasy Premier League and I think that's all that matters really. :p

That's some compilation video of his performance against Spartak Nalchik on the previous weekend.
It's inevitable that he will be subject to transfer speculation this summer, his boots are too big for the Russian league.

Go back a year and the idea of saying that would have been laughable. And think he could've been a Birmingham player. Eugh.

I got into a 'debate' on this issue with a Birmingham fan on another forum. He wants McLeish gone, and one of the reasons he gave is that he said he tried to sign McGeady. I pointed out that McGeady is on fire in Russia, his responce was that it is a poor league where even Garry O'Connor was a success and that McGeady is worse than Andy reid

The SPL is a poor league, Wes Hoolahan was a flop in it and was sold to Blackpool. He was in the Championship TOTY and is now a Premiership player. Now how can that be going off how that Birmingham fan looks at things?

Spartak went out of the cup to CSKA today (3-3 in normal time and 4-5 on penalties).

McGeady had an assist for the first Spartak goal (1 min on vid below), a half-assist for the third Spartak goal (4 mins on vid below) and smashed home his penalty in the shoot-out (8 mins on vid below).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9t07pCBLkw

He also scored late on at the weekend against Amkar Perm in a game Spartak went on to lose (start of below vid).

Fantastic penalty. The turn back for the third goal was excellent too. Vagner Love's hair is amazing though.

Was at the game and the atmosphere was one of dread throughout, Spartak fans would have been outnumbered had police and officials let the 6,000+ (from where I was standing it looked pretty close to it as they were penned in an enclosure that according to UEFA can hold 8,000 people) CSKA fans into the ground. By half-time most of them had given up and left the area, when we left at full time it was empty. It might sound nuts that a club would choose to turn away punters, but it would have meant the home fans being outnumbered. Cracking match and Spartak were very unlucky.

Thanks for the vids Rock. The firstr goal reminds me of a match I watched on telly years ago under Eoin Hand. It must be the style of Russian TV producers to show a shot of the ball in the net after every goal. I recall watching a game in Moscow (I think we lost 2-0) and all I can recall is the image of the ball nesting in the net after each goal.
