I wouldn't have a problem with Trapattoni. His record speaks for itself. The only problem is his age, but he still seems capable of a good job at most places he goes.

The one thing we can learn here is that the bookies is no way any guide of who is going to get the job. The bookies are playing with the market and they are playing all sorts of games with this.

The RTE sports report started with scoop like sensation, 'from a reliable source - it's Trapattoni with Liam Brady' and talked about it
only after a listener emailed in 'not another scam' did the presenter concede that the scoop only has a questionable rumour value.

Fout times so far RTE have jumped the gun with no more info than the average punter. Paddy Power's are putting in marble counter tops in all branches with Italian leather sofas for punters to lounge in as they lose their ****** on another 'dream team' punt.

Another Trap close source (http://www.irishexaminer.com/irishexaminer/pages/story.aspx-qqqg=sport-qqqm=sport-qqqa=sport-qqqid=54253-qqqx=1.asp)

'but well-placed sources have confirmed he is ‘very close’ to inking a three-year deal to take the Republic of Ireland up to, and beyond, the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa'

'I understand Trapattoni has already had “positive” conversations with at least one leading figure involved in the recruitment bid.'

I take that back. The pressure got to me. ;)

The Sun say he'll be announced as manager next week.

Hopefully Givens walks:

I'm guessing they have the same source as everyone else. Most of the papers are a lot more conservative though. :)

Anyway, all SSN said was that he was in talks, that has pretty much been confirmed. When someone hears SSN get something badly wrong then let me know. As it is I trust them as much as BBC.co.uk which everyone seems to worship.

FAI to get Trapattoni and Brady
Emmet Malone Soccer correspondent
(Irish Times)

International soccer: The FAI is set to appoint veteran Italian coach Giovanni Trapattoni as Steve Staunton's successor. The 68-year-old is on course to reach an agreement with the association over the coming days and is likely to be in Croke Park on Wednesday night to watch the team play Brazil.

...

http://www.ireland.com/newspaper/breaking/2008/0202/breaking24.htm

What's interesting to me is that the Times have not yet been so positive about an appointment and this seems fairly sure.

I love the bit in bold, seems the amigos have been bypassed, well spent money there.

Finally I hope in 2 years time we're not seeing this as the dawn of an era of defensiveness and failure.

NeilMcD

Yeah it seems to be pretty much fact. I reckon that there was no contact early next week between the panel and Trappatoni. I would not be suprised if this was instigated by Brady.

Brady has wanted this job for a while now but realised himself that he did not have the experience for it. However the FAI were hoping to get him on board somehow. I reckon what has happened is that Brady maybe has created this situation where he is the number 2 to Trapatoni and may be in place to take over. If this is the situation I am happy with that I must say.

Brady has a great footballing mind and will be popular with the players and has also good strategic vision of a footballing set up.

The Times and the Sun are carrying this big and pretty much as fact. Everything else has been clouded with speculation but this seems to be a bit beyond that.

I think contact was probably denied last night in order to keep people off the scent.

At least it'll be intelligent football though which is important for me. Nothing like the Lawrie Sanchez in your face style that we don't have the players for. I definitely think we've the players to suit Trapattoni's system. It's not as if we're going to be sitting back and playing on the break at home to Georgia. It'll be more away from home and if it's successful then I'm happy.

Anyway, he's over 2/1 on Betfair. If it wasn't for the fact that the market has been so crazy he'd be 1/3 after an article like that in the Irish Times.

"The FAI is set to appoint veteran Italian coach Giovanni Trapattoni as Steve Staunton's successor."

No holding back there.

He's 2/1 on betfair because people are offering those odds. Nothing to do with the market being "crazy". If he's that much of a cert, why aren't these people "in the know" getting every last cent on him????

If there is one thing we have learnt from this process is that the market is not the place to look for when it comes to is going to be the manager. The odds have been messed about so often that it is pretty much meaningless at this point.

I would describe Trappattoni's style of play as cagey rather than defensive. We need a hard nose manager who knows what hes doing and Trapp fits the bill. Lets hope it works out and it is more Wenger than Vogts.

He's about the 10th different favourite. That's a crazy market and that's the reason his odds are so high.

He has an excellent record but does anybody have reservations over his "communication skills". Stan got torn to shreds by the media here and Trap seems to struggle with foreign language and has a poor media temperment. If somebody brought a muppet puppet to him at training I'm sure he'd go crazy and probably knock the "journalist" out.

Don't get me wrong, I think he has an excellent track record, but this is a bit nuts!:

He probably laughs about that now. "You tell me" would never get that worked up about the game, that's for sure.

As for his communication issues, sure the players play as if they don't understand each other, never mind the boss.

NeilMcD
02/02/2008, 11:09 AM
I think the key to this is Brady. I think we all like Brady or like the way he talks about the game. I reckon the players will like Brady as a coach too and if Trappatoni can do the tough guy in the same way Ferguson does and does his coaching with Kidd, Mc Claren, Quieroz, I can see this really working.

If its a Trappatoni with Brady, I will be very happy

Not at all. Quite the opposite I think.

He shows serious passion which Ireland have lacked of late. The problem with Stan and the media was, with all due respect, he made himself out to be a complete idiot. He was devoid of proper language skills and couldn't hold a press conference. That clip above showed how strongly Trap felt about the situation and that he couldn't give a balls if he was sprouting some crap because he got the foundations of what he was trying to say across. His english might be just as bad but as long as we understand the basics and he manages the team well I couldn't care less.

The chairman of the Selection Panel set up to recruit the next manager of the Republic of Ireland senior international team has asked the President of the Football Association of Ireland to convene a meeting of the Board of Management. The President has called a meeting for tomorrow, Sunday, at 6.30pm in the Citywest Hotel, Saggart, Co Dublin. A statement will be issued after the meeting and posted on the FAI website.

I can see it now.

"The FAI are pleased to announce that Don Givens will take control of the team until the end of the current campaign, to allow the Selection Team more time to find a manager. Accordingly, some of our qualification matches will have their dates changed to allow caretaker Don Givens attend a Samba Soccer camp, go on a holiday he has already booked (Falcon won't let him change the date) and appear on Sport's Tonight in May.

A new manager is due to be appointed in mid 2009."

Ah no. Here's hoping the decision is the right one!
