12noon irish time friday 25th August. Click (http://www.uefa.com/index.html)

Potential seeded team opposition here (http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/seeduc2006.html)

I think best teams to get would be Livorno, Chievo, Grasshopers, Brondby, Heerenveen, Blackburn or Newcastle (dispite high seeding could only beat Lithuanians 1-0)

Newcastle would be good draw for Derry as nothing to lose & Newcastle seem poor.

Heerenveen

would be a brilliant draw for Derry, real real chance of progressing!

there are a good few teams in there that derry can beat over two legs

Found this on a site for predicted groups in the draw:

Group 2

Seeded
Panathinaikos
Sparta Praha
Celta
Austria
Litex

Unseeded
M. Haifa
Nancy
Zaporizhya
Sion
Derry

There seems to be a "system" of shifting teams to ensure cannot play team from your own country.

I don't think it's meant to be.

From the official UEFA site

Group 2: Seeded Unseeded
Panathinaikos FC (GRE) Maccabi Haifa FC (ISR)
Hertha BSC Berlin (GER) Legia Warszawa (POL)
Paris Saint-Germain FC (FRA)FC Metalurg Zaporizhzhya (UKR)
FK Austria Wien (AUT) Odense BK (DEN)
PFC Litex Lovech (BUL) Derry City FC (IRL)

Some tasty potential ties there Panathinaikos. Hertha BSC Berlin , Paris Saint-Germain all good money spinners

Id fancy Litex if i was a derry fan

never mind the money spinners in the first round, get either the austrian or bulgarian team, hopefully progress and then the money spinner is all around you.

Lord Summerisle
25/08/2006, 8:46 AM
Exactly. Better off getting a beatable side at this stage- make the group stages and take the money-spinners there.

25/08/2006, 9:10 AM
I don't think any of the ties would be easy but certainly Litex or Austria Vienna would be a lot more beatable than PSG.
Does anyone know if they re-draw for the group stages or do the winners of the 5 ties make up the group?

Terry

re draw for the group stages

25/08/2006, 9:28 AM
Your all crazy! I want an easy draw here and i want all the top seeds knocked out so there is no money spinners in the group stage! then i want Derry to romp home with 5 wins (or however many!) then crush the remaining minnow plus some weak teams from the Champions league (like FC Thun last year!) in the knock out stages and win the bloody thing! Then we'll have a nice health co-efficient for next year.... and a few years after that! Then do that a few years in a row and everyone in the EL will be getting a place in Europe as long as a) you don't get relegated and b) you don't have Roddy as your manager (which means you default to A)

From the money spinning perspective, Olympiakos have Rivaldo and he could be a crowd puller. Hopefully they get the weakest draw though.

:D Brilliant!

When will the 1st round ties be played?

Maybe but Olympiakos aren't in Derry's pool so they dan't draw them at this stage.

Derry's possible opponents are here

http://www.uefa.com/competitions/UEFACup/news/Kind=1/newsId=448958.html

Panathinaikos, Hertha Berlin PSG, Austria Wien and Litek Lovech.

ger121

Litex won 2-1 at home to Omonia of Cyprus to go through 2-1 on agg. Can be beaten over 2 legs by Derry if they play to their potential.

Hertha won 3-2 on agg but were pushed on the way by the Georgian side Ameri. Would be tough for Derry but you never know.

Austria Wien are in the UEFA cup after losing 4-1 on agg to Benfica in the 3rd qualifying round of the CL. As with Litex could be beaten over 2 legs.

PSG and Panathinaikos are the 2 draws they'd want to avoid if they want any chance of progressing. The only consolation is it would probably be on tv and they'd get a decent crowd at the match.

I'd like to play Austria Vienna. If we got Berlin would it mean a trip to the world cup final ground? Where do PSG play their games?

Litex Lovech only beat Longford 3-1 on agg. a few years ago in the UEFA Cup, Stephen Kenny would know plenty about them and where they are going.

If I remember correct, it was 2 late goals in the 2nd leg that put them through after a 1-1 in Longford.

pete

Austrians are the best option. Austria "only" ranked 20th in europe.

Would be good chance of big bucks from german tv though if got Hertha,

You cant expect expect to make a fortune in 1 match. However, make the group stages and your elected. So Derry should play the game at the Brandywell if at all possible. Look at what Shels did to get "money". Now they are almost bankrupt. Litex are beatable but just about. A massive step up for Derry. Away goals are essential regardless of who they get. Not long to go now.

This is my attempt to qualify-by-maths. Using good old Berts stats.

So here goes...
Derry = MC[squared]. That was easy... what's all the fuss about!

All seriousness aside now for a minute!

Austria Wien seem to be living on one good season (04/05), Litex are the same but worryingly it was last year! so avoid them I would say!

Hertha clocked up 12.444 points last year too.... a worry!

Panathanikos and PSG going on form are due a good year! (seems like they both take every second year off!) Though they still put a good few points in the bag on the 'off' year.

So mathematics tells me we want Austria Wien!

If you disagree you are wrong ;) The proof of my theory is below!

02/03 03/04 04/05 05/06 06/07 rank07

Thats curtains for Derry for sure. Ah well it was good while it lasted. Hopefully they will keep the score respectful anyway. May be even get a draw at home?

Tough draw, bu Derry have been upsetting the odds so far. They've a quality squad, so they might put it up to PSG. If they keep it tight at the back in the first leg, and keep a clean sheet-they'll have a decent chance in the second. Hopefully PSG will underestimate Derry.

Well the two most recent meetings against French sides by Irish clubs have not resulted in any hidings. Cork lost 4-2 on agg to Nantes in the QF of the Intertoto drawing 1-1 at home and Shels lost 4-2 to Lille on agg in the 1st round of the UEFA cup also drawing at home 2-2.

PSG are far better than both those teams but a draw could be possible at home. You never know.

dav_sfc
25/08/2006, 11:29 AM
Fu<ken worst draw ever! Now looking for Vs Lille, Vs Depor style home performanaces from Derry.
Draw at home will be minimum requirements to progress. More importantly that would give the extra points needed to get seeded in the champions league rd 3 if Derry were to win the league. (am i right about that?) Plus and extra .333 for a draw! Imagine 2.833! that puts us well ahead of schedule of getting 2.0 a year for the next 5 years! (2 years ahead if im not mistaken!)

have to correct you on one point here, Lille are FAR better than PSG over teh last two seasons. FAR better. and thats a fact. Derry haven't a prayer against a French Ligue 1 side though. Worst draw they could have got

You have to lok at it this way - Newcastle got past Ventspils (I think) in the round just gone, 1-0 nil on agg.I reckon Derry could have caused an upset there. So there's every possiblity that Psg may flatter to deceive, and allow Derry to cause a few shocks.
