For anyone who didn't see Deery's second goal, it was a breaking ball from the box 25 yards out struck just as it hit the ground rifled into the net. Two sublime finishes from Deery. Martyn's goal was great, he broke into the box, took it around the keeper and calmly held off the Gretna defence to stroke it past their defenders into the net. Excellent performance by Derry. They've showed great character to come back from such an early conceded goal.

Yup, crashed for me. How often do you see an Irish team win 5-1 away in Europe though?!? :D Great result Derry. You have done yourselves and the league proud tonight. Well done.

Gretna 1-5 Derry City
Gretna's European debut ended in crushing defeat as lethal Derry City all but assured their place in the first round proper of the Uefa Cup.

Ryan McGuffie gave Gretna an early lead but Darren Kelly responded for Derry as honours remained even at the interval.

But the second-half was dominated by some masterclass finishing from Derry as they beat Gretna into submission.

Both Kevin Deery and Ciaran Martyn bagged braces as the strong Irish side ran out thoroughly convincing winners.

Gretna manager Rowan Alexander retained the starting 11 responsible for the 6-0 weekend thrashing of Hamilton Accies.

Derry were minus Killian Brennan, though Kevin Deery, Gary Beckett and Stephen O'Flynn were all passed fit.

The Irish side started strongly but an error from goalkeeper David Forde let in McGuffie, whose shot fell wide.

McGuffie got it right in the 12th minute though, pouncing on Brendan McGill's header to send a low left-foot shot into the corner of the net for Gretna's first ever European goal.

Derry were back on level terms mid-way through the half when Sean Hargan collected a long ball on the left and sent in a cross for Kelly to beat Alan Main with a hanging header.

Gretna's Chris Innes was booked shortly after the break for a trip on Ciaran Martyn and from the resultant free-kick Deery blasted a superb finish into the top corner of Gretna's net.

Deery had the ball in the back of the net again two minutes later when he fired a ferocious half-volley past the helpless Main from 35 yards.

The Gretna goalkeeper was beaten again after 63 minutes when Martyn raced into the box, rounded Main and squeezed a successful shot between two defenders in the goalmouth.

Martyn then rounded off the rout with his second to virtually assure Derry's progress in the Uefa Cup and leave Gretna stunned.

Well done Derry and thanks for 100 blips i won.

I just dont like some of the people saying it was amazing that Derry actually won. Maybe thats what the league is missing, a bit of faith. Fair enough i wouldn't have said 1:5 but i always know Derry would spank them.

Setanta commentators meant to be really struggling with the excuses ... five freakish goals and the like, pftt, they just look dumb now in fairness.

RTE are just having a banter, no commentary, just a chat!!
Thought the RTÉ coverage was superb. Really felt as close to being at the match as it could have. The commentators were fans, basically - cheering at every goal and going mental. They knew their stuff as well - no panic when the goal went in, said things were still going well for Derry, slagged my mate Davey Forde :) - and how right they were.

Would love to be a Derry fan on the p!ss in Glasgow tonight!

I listened to 5 Live, just out of curiousity, when the penny finally dropped they were very complementary. Said that 3 of the goals were the finest you would see anywhere in European football.

Yeah fair play to them. They gave credit where it was due tonight. They had nothing but praise for the league, Derry and their fans. A great advertisement for the league on UK national radio.

Thank you Derry, you've done your city and our league proud.

Things are getting better, slowly, but nonetheless better. It feels even greater than it usually does to be an Eircom League supporter. You wouldn't get this supporting Sunderland.

Yes!

HARPS TILL I DIE

Two brilliant commentators individually but together they were unreal, fair play it has to be said ... Tony Doherty had his heart on his sleeve and made not being at the game not so bad. Unrealy atmosphere being decribed by the two boys.

I suppose not all Irish media is tripe !?!

I know Gretna are a 1st division side but they are less then even money to win that league so a Premier division side in waiting. No 5-1 win can ever be lucky. Will be reading the papers tomorrow with interest.

He can say what he likes, no ones listening. Most people would rather hear him sing again over talking I imagine.

General shock on the Hearts board (http://www.jamboskickback.co.uk/showthread.php?t=9128) - wondering if Derry have a financial backer!

And here's the Gretna forum (http://www.gretnafootballclub.co.uk/fanzone/forum/) if anyone's interested! :)
