I have that single by the Stranglers CTID - b-side has George Melly singing with the Stranglers on a song called "Old Codger" - Melly makes the song absolutely filthy even though the lyrics aren't naughty but Melly could recite the rosary and make it disgusting.:D Killer bass on this song.

Delbert McClinton's version of Frankie Miller's "Sending me angels" which was on a lot when CMTV was on over here. McClinton taught John Lennon to play the harmonica and also does a killer version of "Come Together". Great voice even if he's listed under country.

Elvis Costello and the Attractions " Good Year For The Roses"
Billy Connolly " D.I.V.O.R.C.E." Soft Cell " Tainted Love"

Yes only heard "Old Codger" once. Apparently Melly always had a high regard for The Stranglers and was delighted to be asked.
The Delbert McClinton must have been the featured mouthorganist on Bruce Channels original version of " Hey Baby" cause rumour has it Bruce his band and the Beatles were on the bill together on a British tour in 1962.

Status Quo's version of John Fogerty's (ex-Creedence Clearwater Revival) "Rockin' all over the world".

The Nice's version of "America" from the movie I can't recall the name of.....the one about the New York gangs.....Leonard Bernstein song, I think.

Eric Clapton - "Cocaine" by JJ Cale
Eric Clapton - "I shot the sherrif" by Bob Marley (dunno if Marley actually wrote it but he recorded it first anyway)

"Take a little bitty piece of my heart now baby" - current version by Beverley Knight - also versions by Faith Hill and made famous by loads of singers - Janis Joplin etc.

Brendan O'Brien and the Dixies cover of "Little Arrows" by Leapy lee. LOL:D

Sid Vicious and the Sex Pistols " My Way "
Sid Vicious and the Sex Pistols " Something Else"

The pistols don't play on those covers; they're from Sid's brief solo career. They split up in January of 78; those tracks were released Feb 79 and June 78 (respectively).

Anyway, here's two more:

Rage Against the Machine: The Ghost of Tom Joad
Sex Pistols: (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone

Well they were on " The Great Rock N' Roll Swindle" Original Sound track and it says Sex Pistols on the labels of the singles. One of which I have. Steve Jones ( guitar) and Paul Jones ( Drums) play on those tracks. Johnny had left in January 1978 and Malcolm McLaren continued to get the rest of them to record as Sex Pistols while they completed the Movie.
The Guinness Book of British Hit Singles credits the records to the Sex Pistols.

I stand corrected. I wouldn't put too much stock in it being on the Swindle though--I doubt if the pistols are responsible for Malcom's "You need hands" or the French geezer's accordion version of 'Anarchy'--but I'd trust the Guiness Book. I've seen those records attributed to Sid alone (e.g.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sid_Vicious), but I would imagine that Guiness are pretty reliable on such matters.

Well there was more than just Sid and the lads on the soundtrack. They dug up some old demos featuring the band when Johnny was in the line-up and
not only are you correct about Malcolm McClaren's " You Need Hands" and Jerzimy's " L'Anarchie Pour Le U.K." The Pistols did not play on the tracks recorded by the Black Arabs which were a disco medley of some Pistols tracks.

Agreed.

I kind of like Tori Amos' Smells Like Teen Spirit, but it's probably down to the novelty of being able to make out the lyrics of a Nirvana song.

Jayz, I don't know about that.
He was hardly a cult hero before that.
Got an inevitable boost but he's among the worlds most famous singer-songwriters for some time.

Should point out that in my couple of years on foot.ie this is at least the third thread on 'best cover versions' ...I predict a 'worst cover versions' thread before sun up.

Off the top of my head and awarding extra points for doing something a little different to the original...

Kate Bush' Wuthering Heights covered by China Drum (N.B. NOT the clown with the acoustic guitar)

Joe Jacksons Got The Time covered by Anthrax

Julie Cruise' Falling covered by The Wedding Present

Rogers & Hammersteins 'A Few of My Favourite Things' covered by Me First & The Gimme-Gimmes

while i agree he was one of the most famous singer songwriters for soem time i think he now holds a fake cult status due to his popularity mainly from liverpool winning the CL.... as i have said i think his cover of "i see a darkness" is one of the best cover versions ever but when ever i some one elses hears it there like thats **** put on ring of fire... most of his own songs are dark. but his most famous ones are either funny or cheesy

Mojopin, you're living in a world of wrong there. Folsom Prison Blues is neither funny or cheesy.

Lionel is right, this is a recurring thread. I'll try and pick songs I haven't mentioned on the previous threads.

Paul Anka's entire new album. Special mention to Black Hole Sun.
The Fall - Mr.Pharmacist
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Running scared

One I know I've mentioned before, but is worth repeating:
Ballboy - Born in the USA

Jogged by noby's post: The Fall's cover of The Kinks' Victoria I always loved, and isn't There's A Ghost In My House by them a cover as well?

Other faves, not already mentioned, off the top of me head:
The Futureheads - Hounds Of Love
Soft Cell - Tainted Love
Hayseed Dixie - Highway To Hell
The Gourds - Gin And Juice
Tony Tribe - Red Red Wine
Richard X & Sugababes - Freak Like Me
Sonic Youth - Into The Groovey
