Agree for the most part but I do like this....
Noel Gallagher - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GA7cyLcwHi4)
Lots of Hayseed Dixie contenders for best cover version, imo. But maybe I'm just getting old.

Scala – Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana)

Camille O’Sullivan – Pirate Jenny (Kurt Weil/Bertolt Brecht)
The Dresden Dolls – Pretty in Pink (The Psychedelic Furs)
The Divine Comedy – I’ve Been to a Marvellous Party (Noël Coward)

Some good ones that I have heard recently (though there are some good ones I can't remember that I haven't heard in awhile):
Old Crow Medicine Show - Wagon Wheel (Bob Dylan) (I believe was someone here's signature, thats how I think I found it)
Toots and the Maytals - Country Roads (John Denver?)
U2 - Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) (Darlene Love?)
Blues Brothers - Nearly every song they did
The Mouldy Joes - Those Were the Days (Mary Hopkin?...its Huddersfield Town's song and their version was for HTFC, but I think its decent)
Some good ones that aren't really covers but sort of interpretations of traditional songs:
Real McKenzies - Loch Lomond (traditional)
Dublners/Pogues (some versions together and some separate on all of them) - Whiskey in the Jar/Irish Rover/Wild Rover
Thin Lizzy - Whiskey in the Jar
Some bad ones:
Metallica - Whiskey in the Jar (Thin Lizzy...maybe not as bad as others but an impossible standard to live up to)
Any cover of a Beatles song
Save Ferris - Come on Eileen (Dexy's Midnight Runners...already mentioned)

Funny thing - though Elvis Costello wrote "Girls' Talk", he didn't record/release it until after Dave Edmunds - Edmunds: June 1979 / Costello: January 1980 :)

Might not be the most amazing version you've ever heard. This is a right and hard song to reproduce vocally, but I tried my best. Complete with harps top ;P

Cheers bro, sound that night was terrible. I think theres a better video out there somewhere since that one was taken. The beard has expanded since then too. Going more scruffy 70's by the day.
Here's another cover if you're interested. roughly recorded last night in fact with the girlfriend, for the Horslips fans.

Like a "No Homers"-type deal?
We could call it "No Paul O'Sheas"; I imagine that someone who owns a man-bag has to have a clean shaven face. They're the rules yeah?
