Roy Keane to leave Old Trafford

Manchester United has today reached agreement with Roy Keane for Roy to leave the Club with immediate effect.

The agreement allows Roy to sign a long term deal with another club to enable him to secure his playing career beyond what would have been the end of his contract at United in the summer.

The Club has offered Roy a testimonial in recognition of his 12 ½ years at Old Trafford.

The Club thanks Roy for his major contribution to the Club during his years of service.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said:

“Roy Keane has been a fantastic servant for Manchester United. The best midfield player in the world of his generation, he is already one of the great figures in our Club’s illustrious history. Roy has been central to the success of the Club in the last 12 ½ years and everyone at Old Trafford wishes him well in the rest of his career and beyond”

Chief Executive David Gill said:

“Roy has been a towering figure at the Club for over a decade. His dedication, talent and leadership have been qualities that have marked him out as one of the true greats. On behalf of everyone at the Club, we wish him every success in his future career.”

Roy Keane said:

“It has been a great honour and privilege for me to play for Manchester United for over 12 years. During my time at the Club I have been fortunate to play alongside some of the best players in the game and in front of the best supporters in the world. At all times I have endeavoured to do my best for the management and the team.

Whilst it is a sad day for me to leave such a great Club and Manager I believe that the time has now come for me to move on. After so many years, I will miss everyone at the Club.

I send my best wishes for the future to the management, players, staff and supporters of the Club.”

Player power - I suspect many of the players took offence at his comments and it proved impossible to heal the rifts. The full story will out in due course.

Keane to sign for Newcastle and not Celtic. I don't think the FAI would appoint him as manager.

Typical Dub jibe.

The man was a living legend. 12 years of loyal service to the cause of United.
A true hero- one i will never forget in all my days of loving this sport.

I think its sad that you are gloating about an Irish player due to your loyalty to a foreign club. Whatever about liking foreign teams but to take pleasure in the suspension of and Irish player and as a result no playing in the biggest game of his life is quite said. I was delighted for Steve Finnan in May as I was Denis Iriwin in 1999.

This is an Ireland forum, not for foreign clubs!! He has been one of the best players in the premiership, Garcia couldn't touch him for commitment!!

Sad day indeed and im a Leeds fan but if he is to sign for another team it will probably be for Celtic because he wont play for another English team which is good news. ;)

He might even get the Ireland job now which would be even better news because that means no Venables :D

If the rumours are true about him been effectively sacked, then I think the idea of never playing against Utd will go out the window. However I have a sneaking feeling that he could be the next Ireland manager. I just think the FAI will look at the Welsh the Dutch and the Germans and think they were good appointments. Also I think Delaney is a big supporter of Keane and Delaney is effectively calling the shots here. It would be a huge huge gamble. It would get me excited however I could certainly see the flaws in it. However I think we have change as a country from 1986 and I dont want some 2nd rate English manager whose career is coming to a close i.e. Venables, Keegan, Robson etc.

Stupid comments from Liverpool supporters. And both incorrect but what do you expect? You should go to the Liverpool boards lads and not the Irish one.

That long streak of misery that can't score goals injured Keane.
And he did win a European Cup.

Not getting into whether he's a legend or not BUT why would a Dub care about his loyal service to United?

if you're a United fan, cool, whatever but whats it got to do with Dublin...

Exactly & it was Keane that basically got Man Utd to the final with his performances in the previous rounds!!

If the FAI consider him beyond his usefulness as a player (and let's face it even if he hadn't retired he'd still be Irish footballs past rather than future ) I don't think they'll want anything to do with him.

He'll want all the facilities Brian had and more, he'll want games involving potential opponents scouted properly as Brian did -and if that involves 35,000 quid to charter a plane then so be it. Not the sort of spending the FAI like to see going on at all.

Beyond that he has no greater call on the job than Stan or Trigger.
