An excellent first season for O’Brien, can’t ask for much more of 1 million euro signing, cup final and Europa League qualification secured with him playing week in week out.
He seems to be a bit of a cult hero there and the supporters seem to be in 2 minds wether to cash in or keep him and hope he develops further,I’d really hope he stays at Lyon rather go to Juve who’ll have a new manager and are hard to gauge, another season of playing every week and Europa League football sounds like a good idea to me…..
Are we 100% sure that he is nor a Terminator ? !
He looks like he could be a Terminator !

Would have to be a contender for Irish player of the season in terms of his development at club level. Probably between him, Szmodics and Kelleher, but unlike Szmodics O'Brien did it in one of the big five leagues and unlike Kelleher he did it for pretty much the whole season. (Maybe an honourable mention for Scales as well).
He's comfortably the youngest of the three also. Great to see a player breaking through almost from nowhere like that, even if it is yet another centre back.

Lyons form pretty much turned around when O'Brien cemented his place in the team. They looked like being in a relegation battle early on so it's been a great turn around by then.
In fairness, they picked up five points in his first six games and ended the season with the worst defensive record of anyone outside the bottom three.
It's been an unexpected bonus having someone break through in one of the big 5 Euro leagues, but let's steer away from the idea he turned things around himself.

I'm not saying he turned things around by himself, but their form did improve once he got into team and he stayed in the team for rest of season as they impressively climbed the table

That's a shame
Would loved to see how Jake would have handled him.
I'm sure the Lyon fans dont agree of course

They lost 4-1 in both league games this year, albeit O'Brien was on the bench the first time (Mbappe scored twice) and Mbappe was on the bench the second time.
A Cup final is a good time for an easier game though!

O'Brien's sporting achievements are incredible, really. A true athlete.
His journey in the game is a classic example of how young players should always try to forge their own path, back themselves to the hilt and never be dissuaded by naysayers. Good on him.

Good article about him here. Really highlights how no one seen a season like this coming from him. Even us on here who talk about Irish football an unhealthy amount still under rate what he's even done this season I think

The fact that he got and started every game bar one due to suspension is some going.
They have Caleta Car and Lovren on their books, as well as a couple of others at centre half. Lovren started alongside Caleta Car and O'Brien when they were playing a back 5. He's fallen to the bench and hasn't got a look in really. It looks like O'Brien hasn't been subbed either. There's a 10 cap Ivorian that can't make the bench too.
Really hope the lad starts against Hungary. Think he'll provide the perfect replacement for Duffy when it comes to defending and attacking set pieces.

Definitely, it's what we want to see as many of our younger players as possible do, when they get an opportunity grab it and kick on. Ferguson, Collins, O'Shea, Bazunu and now most recently Kelleher and O'Brien have done that to their credit. Hopefully Azaz will be next and Omobamidele will nail down a starting spot at Forest also. Honourable mention for Idah in Scotland too and Smallbone has been good for Southampton.

Parrot has also be quite good in Holland. Nor spectacular but good in a bad team
Gets a goal back for Lyon in the 55th min. Currently 2-1 to PSG.

Cool! First Irish player to score in a non-Irish Cup final in... well, about four hours.
But before that though? Anthony Stokes for Hibs in 2016?
Edit - Jonny Hayes scored for Aberdeen in the 2017 final. Any improvements on that?
I know Aldridge and Stapleton have cup final goals to their names.

First Irish player to score in the cup final of one of the big five leagues (England/Spain/Germany/France/Italy) since John Aldridge in 1989? First Irish born player to do it since Frank Stapleton in 1983? Or have I missed someone?

Are we counting Kelleher's penalty in the league cup final shoot out last season?

Shoot-out goals don't usually count anyway (much and all as you'd be tempted to make an exception for a keeper)

Attracting interest from Borussia Dortmund

With Everton mentioned as being in the mix the current Lyon owner John Textor is being linked with a possible takeover of Everton. Some talk he wants to sell his 40% of Palace and be a majority owner instead somewhere else.

That could be a massive opportunity with Hummels expected to leave this summer. Schlotterbeck would be a quality centre-back to play beside.

He already co-owns Crystal Palace, would that be even possible?

Dortmund would be a fantastic move alright. Though, in this case, staying at Lyon would also be really good. I guess he'll be signing for Everton then!
Lyon not only making Mangala's loan move permanent but they're also buying Moussa Niakhate from Forest.
Bringing in two players for a reported €60M this summer could mean they're looking to cash in on O'Brien this summer. Especially with one of them being a CB.

£30m (likely including a ton of add-ons) is the reported asking price for O'Brien with Everton and Nottingham Forest supposedly interested. £23m for Nathan Collins is the transfer record for an Irish player but it could be broken again this summer. If he goes for over £20m it would be the fourth Irish transfer over that amount, all four transfers involving centre backs.

Windfall for City?

They might get a few quid out of it, but any sell on would have been activated when the Eagle group sold him within their own umbrella from Palace to Lyon, so I can't see there being any significant windfall there.
Clever/cynical move from Textor's people to sell O'Brien within the group while he was undervalued, to be fair to them.
Windfall for City?
They'll be entitled to some solidarity contribution payment. 5% of whatever the transfer fee will be is set aside and divided between the clubs that trained him between his 12th and 23rd birthday.
Think they might be entitled to some training compensation also given his age.

French football site foot01.com reporting that a little over €20m (£16.8m) could secure O'Brien.

Incidentally one possible outcome here is that we end up with three Irish centre backs at Nottingham Forest, (O'Brien, Omobamidele and Egan) which wouldn't be ideal.

This isn't based on one post. I've followed you're comments for awhile now, no Irish "fan" would talk about his team/players the way you do. You maybe you do "support" them, but only when things are going well. I think the term for that is "fair weather fan".
In regards to O'Brien it's worth noting that these clubs will have watched more of him than people like Sean have who probably saw the odd highlights of Ligue 1 games involving Lyon if even that. They'll also consider factors such as his age, his physical attributes and his ability on the ball. I know its crazy to suggest an Irish player could be liked by anyone but these factors would all be massive plus factors for any club when signing a player.

Its one report with most sources saying e20M-e25M gets him (16-20M sterling). It is reality as I don't think its too far off for the way the market is today. Kilman just went for 40M. Branthwaite might move for 50M. Mats Wiefer (who? exactly.) went from Feyenoord to Brighton for over 25M.
Its not Irish fans paying the money, its clubs. A player is worth what the market says he is worth.

It isnt really in today's market, especially with the factors I've already mentioned.

With Lyon spending €140M already this summer I'd be surprised if O'Brien was still there come September.

I wonder if that means the latest defensive second coming (aka Branthwaite) is off? If not it'll be interesting to see how O'Brien gets on relative to him.

In fairness what amazing progress in a year to where Everton might be seen as a disapointment. Thos time last year he had finished a season in the Belgian second division. For context Tayo Adaramolo played in the Belgian Premier division last season.
Yeah would have liked to seen him stay at Lyon and playing European football. Then again as Liamoo said he's come some distance in the last two years to get where he is now. Think the sale of Onana means they mightn't have to sell Branthwaite until next summer.
