Yes Travers was player of the year - his stops and Solanke's goals is basically what got them up. It has looked all summer like they were just going to take the Premier League money and accept their fate like Norwich always seem to but suddenly they're making a few signings just before the season starts having done nothing all summer - weird one.

With this signing, if they don't do something about that defence, they're basically just paying a more expensive player to pick the ball out of the net two or three times a game than Travers would have been costing them.

And serving to shave a few bob off the value of one of their biggest assets. I'm really surprised by this. However, Parker had a fairly scattergun approach to recruitment ahead of 20/21 with Fulham. He clocked up a lot of loans of players from all sorts of bigger and continental sides - Southampton, PSG, Lyon, Torino, Bordeaux, Leipzig, Chelsea - and I don't think any or many made a big impression.

If I recall correctly, the owners of Bournemouth are billionaires. I think they could easily pay the wages of a top-class back-up goalkeeper. Great for Travers to have the competition. I can't think of anything else to say about it. Goalkeepers of struggling EPL sides don't get stick unless they deserve it. For example, last season Leeds were losing game after game and conceding loads of goals but nobody was blaming Islier (? if that's the name of the young French lad in nets). I'm backing Travers to hold on to the number 1 jersey in the face of goalie who has played 21 games in 3 seasons...!

Bournemouth's financial backing is a bit of a mystery actually. They seem to be owned by a Russian billionaire, but not one that's overly interested in investing in the club. He seems to have avoided being sanctioned to date also, possibly keeping a low profile is working out well for him.

So their stadium is still tiny and they've done nothing much with it. They don't seem to overspend on the playing side either - last season they pretty much just spent the parachute payment money to get promoted again and they haven't spent massively this summer up to now.

So yes, they do appear to have a billionaire owner, but a fairly disinterested one at the same time.

I hope you are right but, as I've stated, Neto will be their third signing after Tavernier and Fredericks. The rest of their squad is primarily unproven outside of the Championship (granted Travers is too). People that know more than me have identified their recruitment so far (excluding Neto) as a key factor in predicting their relegation (the Athletic's writer's weighted average ranking has them finishing last and an accompanying narrative in their season preview sees numerous writers referencing the transfers). I don't see how they would prioritize a sub goalkeeper...

Keeps Neto on the bench for the visit of Arsenal today, but they're 2-0 down after 15 minutes. Not sure either was his fault really - Bournemouth generally getting torn apart by a much better team - but hopefully heavy defeats against Man City and (presumably) Arsenal won't be used as a stick against him by the manager

Absolutely nothing he could have done for either. He actually made a great save on the first only for the rebound to fall right to Odegaard. The second goal was one of the most clinical finishes I have ever seen, no goalkeeper would have had a chance.

Bournemouth's defense are absolutely shocking. Nothing he could have done about the third goal.

Zinchenko's reaction to the third goal tells you how good of a goal that was.

I think they have bigger problems than goalkeeper. It'll be a rough year for Travers, but it'll be good for him.

Starts today after Neto made his debut midweek in the League Cup, so that's a positive.

Nice easy game today - Liverpool away. That's a heck of a run for then - Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool in succession. And they're already 1-0 down

Edit - 2-0 now; 8 minutes gone

5-0. Doesn't help that Liverpool have a point to prove after their poor start

At least those games are out of the way and they're starting out of the relegation zone.

The only way is up... So long as they don't have a record-breaking second half

8-0 now, so ten minutes to keep out of the Premier League record books.

Salah not involved in any of the goals - scoring or assisting - which is remarkable. And annoying for my Fantasy Football team

9-0 now. One more and he'll have conceded the most goals in a single game in the Premier League.

Except they finished second in the Championship last season with pretty much the same team. Just shows the difference in standard - there's about 50 Irish players in the Championship this season but most of them are miles off the level of the Premier League.

I think only the 7th was really a mistake from Travers, even then he made a good stop but the parry came off the wrong part of his hand and straight back to Firmino.

It is concerning how bad Bournemouth are, manager will be under pressure and could change things in goal even though Mark has been doing ok

Honestly you're part of the problem as a goalkeeper in a 9-0 defeat. I don't get this idea where 'was he at fault for any of the goals', yeah he was collectively. He might have bad communication, make the defenders nervous with his positioning, one of the goals he was all over the place when the ball came into the box, might have been the second.

They'll probably get someone to do a job for the rest of the season before appointing someone full time to take over once relegated.

They not 100% gone after 4 games
Its a crazy decision to sack him. He got them up and has no funds it appears

The owner's comments were telling as to why he got the chop. It was because of the comments Parker made after the disaster at the weekend that the club was not investing as it should in playing staff capable of competing in any way with the top half of the premier league. The owner basically told him he'd run the club his way and if Parker is not on board he can leave. Contrasts sharply with what Nottingham Forest have done in the transfer market which is quite stunning in terms of financial outlay. They are saying " we're back and we're here to stay". Its a riskier approach in the long run but i would also put money on them staying up and becoming an established PL team again.

Regarding Travers... i dont think shipping 9 goals means the new coach will put in the new keeper. It would be really knee-jerk to just blame the keeper. I think any coach worth his salt will look closely at all the players that performed to get them out of the Championship and Travers was, as we know, huge in that. I also have this long held belief (rightly or wrongly - i've yet to be convinced otherwise!) that the gap between a top keeper in the premier league and a top keeper in the championship is far less of a gap than that between the top strikers in each division. So, you're not always really trading up that much when it comes to your keepers at that level...

Omobamidele only signed a four year contract this summer. Unless he's got a release clause in his contract you'd want to be spending big big money to have any chance of getting him atm.

Not unexpected. Caretaker manager, 9 goals last game, established alternative available, reasonable to change things around and try a new keeper from their perspective. Obviously, disappointing through our green tinted glasses but understandable decision

Neto opens with a clean sheet, not much to do apparently a couple of routine saves. Vindicates decision, it’s a results game after all

On the bench again today. Was looking decent at half-time, with Bournemouth 2-0 down at Nottingham Forest and Neto having been booked for giving away a penalty in first half injury time. But they came back to win 3-2, so the manager might feel inclined to give that team more time together.

Neto very dodgy at the end, terrible attempted punch I think or perhaps a bad catch attempt. The result probably keeps his position, but not on personal merit

Bournemouth Daily Echo notes (4 Oct) that Harry Redknapp nominated goalkeeper Neto in his Premier League team of the week – describing the Brazilian as ‘Gary O’Neil’s first-choice goalkeeper’. It was the first time since October 2020 the 31-year-old former Barcelona backup keeper has started four consecutive league games.

Neto had been named by Alan Shearer as the top-performing goalkeeper in the final game before the international break.

Unfortunately for Mark T and for the BIG, it looks like he will have to spend much of the PL season on the bench.

Harsh as he couldn?t really be blamed for the goals against Liverpool. but kind of inevitable. They?d already bought Neto so you suspect there was always a likelihood that the more experienced keeper would end up getting the No 1 slot / especially after a 9 nil defeat.

I doubt it. If he is their second choice goalkeeper, they can't take the chance that Neto gets injured or suspended, and then they're left with their third choice keeper as the replacement

Maybe how to turn his name into something more Brazilian sounding so that he might get a proper chance in the Premier League - Travo, Markus Travero, something like that...

Nothing trivial I hope.

He had little enought to do in what I saw of the second half. One shot relatively central which he beat away comfortably. Initially I thought it was a bit unconvincing, as did the co-commentator, but watching the front-on angle I though he did well, taking no chances with a hard shot and beat it away from danger quite firmly. No chance with the pen, even if it was a bit Shay Given-like in diving as far away as possible from the ball :)

Im sure Bournemouth will evaluate all options including current back up and emergency loan options. Travers will need a few solid games if he keeps getting chances
