View Full Version : Chiedozie Ogbene M Ipswich b.1997
I’d certainly like to see more of him, probably in the friendly realistically. He looked impressive against Hungary, albeit a very brief appearance.

Just looking at this video from the FAI for Chiedozie Ogbene's goal which shows the celebrations too. Interesting to note he was fairly swarmed by some of the most senior members in the squad. In particular, McClean, Duffy and Hendrick gave him really strong embraces. Looks like almost everyone swarmed him though.
Goes to show that it's not just in the media that he's a popular character. Appears as though he's won over the dressing room too.

He reminds me a bit of Clinton Morrison, a really bubbly character.
The squad seems to be full of big, positive personalities, even the younger guys and the guys with minimal club experience.
That's really important. I listen to Gavin Bazunu speak and think what I was like at his age. I suppose pro football makes you grow up fast, but still...

He actually reminds me a bit of James McClean. In his attitude and how he plays.

I don't think so as we don't really start with wide players up front and if we did it would more than likely be Connolly and Robinson with Keane central. Also think Horgan would get on before him.
Interesting. Was the second game but still, obviously that video was an insight into how hed impressed management. Ill watch them more often : )
I'd agree he's almost certainly behind Robinson for right forward if we even play three up front. He could be worth a go in the friendly. You never know though, and Kenny has certainly made a few surprise calls over his tenure.
And so he did. And did well. Bar the couple of times he lost possession and set Qatar on their way I think he did himself no harm at all to possible up top selection given how average whats come before have been.
The fact that two players have just come out of relative obscurity has made me much more positive for the future. If we could get 2 more in the positions we've all talked about it would be great!

I see what youre saying, but he has a better temperment. If we could harness the Mcclean in him and balance that with the ability to know when to hold and when to attack he'll be a regular.
McClean actually had a couple of good games I think. His footwork and set up for Robinsons first goal In Azerbaijan was better than I thought he was capable of. Hendrick has also been a pleasant surprise over the last two games.

Great play by Ogbene in his last match. Wins the ball on the edge of his box, carries it to the other box and releases it in a move which results in a goal:

Credited with an assist on the winning goal that propelled Rotherham back to the top of the table. Sadlier came on in the second half and Kayode, who hasn't featured at all in recent weeks, came on a minute before the goals: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/59787669

Lovely. The cross for their first was lovely too. Duff was great at those softly hit, floated crosses that just hang up in the air waiting to be attacked.

Any word on a January move? It would be nice if he moved up a level now, he will likely be up in the championship in Sept if he stays at rotherham, but a bigger better club now would be great. He’s far from the finished product, he has pace and dribbling but is very inconsistent with his end product and crossing. Moving up a level will improve his game.

I hope you are not his agent ! ! Maybe the higher levels want consistency and good crossing ?

He has his faults, but you can't help but love the boy. So much potential if he really gets his head down. I think he's more likely to sign a new deal at up-and-coming Rotherham than move, but that's far from a bad thing.
It's all about progress

Good to see him contribute to the goals last night, and was credited with the assist for the second.

Good finish. There was an article published recently by a non Irish outfit I can't find but the essence of it was that he was causing problems for opposition and creating a lot of chances that weren't converted into goals or assists and that those stats were not as good as they could be as a result. He's gone on a mini run here now of goals and assists and it would be great to see that run continuing until the end of the season.
Biggest complaint Rotherham fans have with him is his end product. He has the pace to beat his man and can get into dangerous positions but his final ball into the box lets him down when trying to find a teammate. Hopefully it's something he's working on and improving.

Contract up at the end of the season. Wonder if he'll still be there at the end of the transfer window.

Third league goal of the season already today. Decent form given the criticism of him back in June

Also scored in the league cup. Makes in 4 goals in 5 games. Not bad at all…
You’d love a transfer to a top championship side in the next week or two. It’s probably the easiest route to the premier league

I see no need for that - he's playing what looks like his first full Championship season at a club that have had a solid start to the season - he's comfortable there and scoring regular against defenses at a higher level than he has throughout his career and he's doing great - let him stay there and hopefully continue to bang in goals and come into the Nations League and Euros with his form good and his confidence high - I don't want him to switch to playing second fiddle or impact sub for a team with a deeper squad

Found it strange that he featured very little in the past week. Seemed to be our only in-form striker going into the Scotland game ( with the exception of Hogan ) available.

he was poor in the last window of games though. personally dont think ogbene is near the level required to start a game. his only use is from the bench against better opponents imo
Will miss the next 4-6 games. If he's out for six games he'll just be back before the leagues break for the WC.

And the November friendlies, more importantly. Maybe Rotherham would be happy to let him have two full games to get fitness back given they won't have a match themselves for another month. But equally it's possible we're looking at another injured forward unavailable for selection.

Gives Zach an opportunity to stake a claim for a squad place. Especially considering the second game vs Malta.
Could be back for the Burnley game tomorrow week manager said in post match interview. Would give him four games before the international break.
Back in the squad tonight and named on the bench.

"Ben Wiles scored the decisive first-half goal after Chiedozie Ogbene drifted into the box and found the Millers captain unmarked to coolly turn the ball home. "
Rotherham's first win away to Sheffield United in 42 years.
Chalk and cheese Sheffield United were compared to the weekend when they played Burnley, but Rotherham showed up with a game plan and worked their socks off for that win. Rotherham were well organised in defence often lining up 5-4-1 in the second half but first half their wing backs were getting high up the pitch and Wiles would try support Ogbene up top best he could.
Kioso also had a very good game and lasted 78mins before hopefully only coming off with cramp. Before the only goal of the game he had the best chance where he got into the box and forced the SU keeper into a good save with a header.

Finding their real level after a strong start to the season. Ogbene will move on at the end of the season regardless I think - there will be a dozen other teams in that division with more resources that would all love to get him in.
Oh he's out the door on a free transfer next summer whether Rotherham stay up or not. Hopefully bangs in a few more goals and gets himself a decent move.

Ogbene is top of Swansea's wanted list, according to Wales Online (29 Dec). His contract with Rotherham ends in July. But can Swansea afford him in January? "It's understood the Millers quoted £2m as the asking price for Ogbene when recently approached by a Belgian club".

pretty sure their head of recruitment has signed him twice previously. be an interesting move, i wonder where swansea see his best position. they are in need of a rwb by all accounts but seems like obafemi is pushing for a move so ogbene might be a forward option in that case.

He’s out of contract at Rotherham by the seasons end and seems unlikely to renew so if there’s even a small interest in him he’ll be gone in January.
Unless someone from left field comes into the fold, ie a Belgian club, then Swansea look the most likely move especially considering that Manning is looking like he might be moving on himself from Swansea.

Swansea will be looking for a striker. Both Obafemi and Piroe have 18 months left on their contracts and neither player wants to sign a new one so Swansea need to move them on rather than risk losing them for nothing.

i might be in the minority here but id rather see ogbene playing rwb tbh. wont really matter where his club play him though as kenny seems to think hes good enough to be a striker for us

Club Brugge (Head Coach Scott Parker) are reportedly thinking about Ogbene, (voetbalnieuws.be 17 Jan).
Rotherham supposedly quoting £2m for the lad when he's out of contract in June. Wouldn't be a bad move if the unnamed Belgium club that Wales Online said were interested was Club Brugge.
As well as Swansea and Millwall he was linked with Boro today.
