Any idea how that back four lined up ?

I know McGrath played at right back and made, I believe, wee Davy Cooper, look ordinary . The tv coverage also missed Lawrenson's goal initially as it did a replay of an earlier incident.

Yes, one of the most important goals in Irish history and we almost miss it. Such a pity that Lawrenson missed Euro 88 due to an injury. It must still hurt him not to have been there and he might have been the difference between us and a semi-final place. Class player.

p.s. Wonder what Charlton and the police inspector are talking about. Is Charlton being told to sit down ?

Think so. With Lawrenson and Brady in midfield supported by Galvin and Houghton out wide.

One of only 10 caps for Colgan. Didn't realise he got that many https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Colgan Could any of the Drogs supporters fill in the missing appearances for that club?

The most healing in an Irish goal award goes to Matty Holland. It was medicinal, it was more than a goal, it stopped the country from bleeding out :)

Five years on Saturday it seems - http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/18180105

Same as that, kind of, I ended up swapping jerseys with one of them. Mine was a brand new, swanky looking training top. His was a well worn unofficial away jersey, about two sizes too big for me and soaked in b.o. It seemed like the right thing to do at the time though.

It's November 11 1987, and we're top of European Championship Group 7 after finishing our campaign with 3 straight wins. Despite that, we only lead Bulgaria on goal difference, before their final game at home to an already eliminated Scotland in fortress Sofia, where they haven't lost in 4 years. In Dublin, Jack Charlton is about to be let go as , as the football isn't attractive enough, unless Scotland win. Having done nothing of note in 85 minutes, the chances of a miracle are getting longer and longer.

Then.

We actually led Bulgaria by a point and had an inferior goal difference.

15 years today since Brian Kerr's first game in charge, a 2-0 win over Scotland with Kilbane and Morrison scoring.
Can't find any videos of the game, even match reviews are hard to come by.
Here's how the BBC saw the game: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/internationals/scotland/2750033.stm

Fairly sure I listened to that one on the radio cos it wasn't on the telly. Seems unthinkable now. And surprised it was the case even then tbh.

Also, how the hell is that 15 years ago?

I definitely watched it on the telly, I was living in Beaumont at the time, so I'm pretty sure I was either in Beaumont House, or in the Goose pub in Whitehall.

The highlights were on the news, I remember, so there was definitely cameras there anyway!

It could well be that it was on Sky, and so not having Sky, I listened on the radio rather than go down the pub.

tetsujin1979
12/02/2018, 7:56 PM
yeah, I think it might have been one of the first games that was only on Sky. IIRC the FAI signed the exclusive deal with Sky after the 2002 world cup, then there was uproar, and the government added all competitive internationals to the list of protected events that had to free to air. Since it was a friendly, it would have been exclusive to Sky. I definitely watched the previous friendly, a 0-0 draw with Greece that redefined dull, in the Goose.

I believe the IRFU are trying to take Six Nations games off that list of protected events to make more money from them.

I also had it in my head that the Scotland game wasn't televised.

And On This Day a further year back we were building up for Saipan... I mean... the World Cup, with a routine win over Russia...

Two decades (minimum) is a long time to wait for another World Cup qualification, granted we had waited six decades before 1990!

I haven't played the video but it is an interesting set up with a line of Russian defenders not in front of the goal and unmarked Irish players. My guess would be a free kick to the right which was played across ?

DeLorean

Pretty much. An Ian Harte free kick from the left which was only headed as far as Steven Reid by a Russian defender. Reid buries it to the net though so at least it wasn't as anti-climatic as this still shot :)

Had a chance to look at the video. I wonder why the commentator said that we were lucky to qualify.

When mentioning Roy Keane, he said that Keane was the players "the Republic would be looking to in the Far East". Indeed he was.

And a rare Robbie Keane headed goal :)

Had only watched it in mute myself, that's bonkers! I can't think of any reason that he would say that, at a push maybe that we rode our luck against the Netherlands?

He said "a touch lucky to qualify", only a touch of luck, I can live with that comment, even if it probably only refers to beating the Dutch and not all the games that went before that.

And a rare Robbie Keane headed goal :)
after which the commentator says,
"the crowd could hardly believe what they were seeing"
