They needed an injury time equaliser to avoid having to qualify via the play offs.

1993:

Ireland 3-0 N. Ireland.

The 25th anniversary of the 3-0 win v NI at home. The goals are widely available. This however, is the pre game minute's silence, when they didn't happen before every game, and so resonated with more people.

15 years today since Brian Kerr's first home game as senior intentional manager, a 1-0 win against Norway.
Also my first Ireland game

Happy anniversary. My first game was the Faroe Islands match (not too long after that I presume), when Robbie Keane broke the goalscoring record. It was actually my only match at the old Lansdowne Road, although I was also there for a Pixies/Kings of Leon gig.

Your only game at the old Lansdowne ! You weren't there to see McAteer's goal against the Dutch - arguably the most important home goal ever scored and many other great results (e.g. beating the French at home) ? It took me years to accept Lansdowne as the home of Irish international football, having been brought up seeing Ireland play at Dalymount. Despite all these years of playing at Lansdowne, I still get the feeling that I am entering a rugby stadium (which of course it is) and am not 100% at home there.

I was barely in existence for that France game! Four months old.

I hadn't even considered going to games really before my mid-20's, wouldn't have even known how to go about getting a ticket. I did have a ticket for Slane (U2) the same day as the Dutch game, but refused it because I didn't want to miss the match. As it turned out they showed the game on the big screen there, which would have been pretty cool.

Saggart is even on a Luas line as well (can't remember if it was then). Would have been great and the 45,000 seater which would have been about right in size.

I was at around 20 internationals at Dalymount. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalymount_Park. These two results I remember with sadness. Played on sunny days if I recall, particularly the Hungarian match.

4/5/1969 1970 FIFA World Cup qualification Czechoslovakia Czechoslovakia 1–2
8/6/1969 1970 FIFA World Cup qualification Hungary Hungary 1–2

I never regarded the place as being the home of Bohs (well I wouldn't as a Rovers supporter) but as the home of Irish football.

On this day fifteen years ago, an injury time goal gave us a 2-1 win over Albania at Lansdowne Road. Footage of the match seems to be hard to come by. I remember Gary Doherty being involved in the winner and little else, other than it was a Saturday and I was in the pub.

I was at the game, it was a late winner. The Albanians had feigned injury a towards the end of the game, and they put the ball out for a throw in so their players could receive treatment. We refused to give it back from the throw in and Doc forced it over the line.

Yep.

I remember everyone going mad in the South Terrace immediately after, and Rocking All Over The World on the PA, and apparently Dunphy on his high horse about Irish fans celebrating the win like that.

Late winner, nice day, good music - **** off Dunphy

I remember it wasn't very good but it was a vital win at the time.

This is the match report from The Guardian - https://www.theguardian.com/football/2003/jun/09/match.sport

If this was indicative of Brian Kerr's luck, it would be worth putting money on the Republic Ireland not just to reach Euro 2004 but win the tournament.

I think it's safe to say that, alas, it was not indicative of Kerr's luck.

Anonymity is useful sometimes.

I was 11 years old in 94 and only had hazy awareness of the World Cup in 1990. Screw the wedding day and the kids being born and getting the shift for the first time. That was the best day of my life.

Favourite pen ? Townsend for me, like he was born for that specific moment.

DeLorean

I like Sheedy's, especially the way Jack Charlton remembers it.

Loosely:

JC: "What are you going to do with it?"

KS: "I'm gonna bash it right off his head."

JC: "Good for you. Lads, I don't think you should place 'em, I think you should bash 'em."

I remember watching it on a big screen in Douglas Court shopping centre as a fourteen-year-old and my memory of it was that it was more epic than recent shootouts I've watched, like Ireland v Spain in 2002, Cork City v Dundalk in 2017 - so I went and had a look at it again a while back and my memory wasn't playing tricks on me - the shoot-out itself takes around 10 minutes, compared with around 6-7 minutes for modern ones. So whatever they're doing to make penos more efficient, they should stop, as it is making it less dramatic

DeLorean
27/06/2018, 7:34 AM
Yeah that's quite noticeable, it seemed more drawn out at the time and watching it back confirms it. After Bonner's save, Townsend & Cascarino ran from the halfway line to embrace him, you'd never see that now. Maybe they weren't supposed to do it then either though as the lineman seemed to be ushering them back!

a few observations...

1) we played a little better with the ball than I remember and most of the long balls were into the channels although it was Israel and Jack hadn't had too long to implement his style.
2) Jon Byrne - totally forgot about him. Classy. I think I've meshed my memories of him and of John Sheridan together.
3) Houghton missed a sitter. Shocker.
4) Only Chris Morris appeared to play his position
5) State of that pitch
6) Israeli keepers eh?
