There are no shortage Maxi yarns, my fvourite was the week before the 2002 cup final and The Mirror had a double page spread on Dundalk FC's 'Head of Security'. He certainly policed the players tunnel over the years in a security bib or without, but that brazenness gave me a good laugh. I have no idea if it was pure mischief, partly believed, or just a good old fashioned Irish spnning a yarn but it was fun regardless! I also dont know how he made ends meet as a Taxi driver in the town, Im sure Im not the only one who spent an age in his taxi, outside home, taling about Dundalk FC and then the arguement when he refused to take payment for the taxi fare. For any of his faults or past beef with the FAI he was a very likeable chap and will be remembered far longer and wider than the vast majority of us LoI fans!! RIP Maxi.
One great story about Maxi, from his usual spot beside the tunnel in oriel park, FAI Cup Semi final v Rovers in 2002, he was working as security and tapped Martin Murray (manager) on the shoulders, Murray thought it was an incident behind him, just about turned around, then you can see Maxi with his hands pointing left and right, he was pointing some tactic on the pitch out to Murray (this was during the game), Murray took 2 seconds, realised a fan was giving him 'advise' and pushed him away...............................probably told this before but always worth another spin.

Brilliant story Oriel! I love reading ones like that. Maxi seemed a brilliant character, may he rest in peace. Thoughts and prayers with his family, friends and all posters on here that knew him

He must have been on Murray's shoulder all night as Im pretty sure it was that night when Murray was interviewd by RTE post match (got hit by a coin?) Maxi was right behind in shot the whole time.

Probably looking for his coin back.
I joke I joke.
Serious character, RIP Maxi

Looking at that video Max seems like a real character! Is this the same bloke who went to FAI HQ & threatened to set himself alight or am I wrong?

That's Maxi yeah
Plus it was plan b, he drove up the night before and had a ladder, the plan was to scale the building and enter through the top.
The ladder wasn't big enough so he parked up for the night, and plan b entered through the front door !
If first you don't succeed...............................
John Gill had to talk him out, Maxi also demanded Delaney come back from his xmas lunch, that was some stunt.
RIP Maxi

It was also water in the canister with a tiny drop of petrol, but of course petrol floats at the top so when he poured the micture over himself he was nearly blined by the thimble full of petrol.

Just saw a video from Oriel Park . The club and the fans and the people of Dundalk in general deserve great credit for the send off they're giving him.
It's obvious from watching it just how much he was loved

Yep Merrion Sq, he brought that corner of the city to a standstill for a few hours. I remember reading about court case, he also had no flint in the lighter, so the Judge went a bit lenient.
I`m also sure I recall he sent flowers to the ladies who worked there at a later date as an apology.
Some nice photos here of yesterday.
Loads of ex players, Chris Shields, David McMillan, even Joey Malone from 88 double winning captain fame (who was very unwell recently, and whom Maxi was in touch with) went. SK there also.

Just read on twitter that Billy Bagster passed away. I hadn’t heard the name in years , he hasn’t been involved in the LOI for over a decade. Afaik he was a coach at Pats and Monaghan at one time.

I remember hmi managing Monaghan and they played some decent stuff too. Was a remote possiblbility for Dundalk manager when in 1st Division 1st time and were looking for a wily character to sort us out on a tight budget, that overcoat hail rain or shine never seemed to come off, things gone full circle.
I think Bobby Browne replaced him as Mons manager another that would have been a popular choice if given the Dundalk job back then.

He did the rounds on local radio back in the day aswell before the LOI got much coverage. He was on Anna Livia radio I’m not sure if the station is still operating.

Long standing Pats fan of over sixty years Paddy Eccles past away over the weekend. He would always stand out on the Camac terrace with his signature white butchers hat with pats embroidered into it. An absolute legend in Richmond may he rest in peace.

Paddy was one of the many true characters in League of Ireland football. A genuinely hilarious man that always had time for anyone. RIP
Billy Bagster deserves a decent send off. The Malcolm Allison of the LOI, how he even got hold of Gitanes in 80s Ireland is a mystery. Just reminds me that the only thing missing from the latest resurgence is interesting characters and autodidacts like him. Ironic, with the preponderance of a certain 'busy' celebrity podcaster in mind, that a cricket-loving-Rangers-following Dungiven native is being waked as we speak...

Brand of French cigarette, i had to google it myself!!
Wots Gitane Dexy?
The philosopher's fag of choice!
The only thing I miss from the bad old days is the lack of characters in the stand and on the pitch. Dermot Keely's 'phone it in' dreary book tour only brought that home even more.

Bit of an unusual one here - but Martin McEvilly, Ireland's oldest man, has died aged 108.
Not sure if he had any LoI connections - maybe not, given he was 20 years older than Galway United - but I think this means the new holder of Ireland's oldest man is the UCD Executive Vice-President Joe Veselsky, who's 106 later this month. He was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire the week before it was dissolved in 1918.

Sure Galway are only just over ten years old. Being 8 years older the Longford Town, now that's impressive.

Incorrect. While GUFC was out of senior football for two years, the supporters trust kept the club alive by participating in the U19's league, before joining up with Salthill, Mervue and the GFA to form Galway FC. The other "partners" left a couple of years later.
Both of the teams you support will be in the First Division next season, no wonder you're lashing out at other clubs! At least it'll be something to talk about on your ****e podcast

There used to be (maybe still is) a tobacconist on Grafton St near Trinity College that sold all sorts of smokes. I uses to go there to buy Giyanes when I had notions of being like Slash from GNR back in the day.

The guy who died in the traffic accident on the NII near Wexford yesterday (Wednesday) was the father of former Wexford Youths players, Warren and Kallum Broaders. Kallum was also on the books of Waterford FC for a time. Rest in peace, Eddie.

Not very familar with BY but what years was he manager in the LOI? Sad day for BYs family.
Sorry to hear this, I remember Billy Young very well from Bohs days, he would have won 2 titles I think in the 70's, possibly a cup too.
Would have been manager in the famous 3-2 UEFA cup win over Rangers in 84.
RIP

Billy Young was the manager when I first started to go and watch games in the mid seventies. As young lad we sang Billy, Billy give us a wave, give us a wave and before we sang sang it again he waved at us. That was either, we were bad singers or he had good crowd engagement. I believe it was the latter. Many big games against better teams, Newcastle and other but the most memorable was Rangers in 1984. Many thanks for getting me hooked on Bohs Billy. Rest well my friend and remember Bohs fans will never forget you. Thanks for the memories Billy.

Not sure how I missed it at the time but I was addened to hear of the death of Peter McParland, former Dundalk, Aston Villa and Northern Ireland legend earlier in this month. I doubt there are too many former LoI players that could claim top goal scorer at a World Cup. The last of his era, RiP.
