Good point made by Roddy in interview on the news today; that anyone with a big budget can buy the best players but it is not really management.

There is obviously a lot more to management then player recruitment, but it is certainly a crucial element.

Getting Sporting Fingal promoted, Drogheda shopping centre development, Ollie Byrne leverage of Tolka, Bohs deal with Liam Carroll and Zurick Bank loan on Dalyer are all dubious achievements and had little to do with proper soccer management.

To describe the behaviour at boardroom level at some of the above as dubious is probably being charitable, but it is not reasonable to dismiss the coaching and team management roles in any footballing success that was achieved.

Looking at the contributions on here, the Blues seem to be aping their hurling counterparts with this appointment in one respect: giving entertainment to everyone else.

It worked for the hurlers - didn't they win the league

I said they were the same "in one respect". But hey, the hurlers were bottom of the heap not so long ago. Bring on the mighty Cabinteely.

Waterford have literally no excuses for when they fold over this clown.

Waterford have literally no excuses for when they fold over this clown.I always cringe when I read posts like this.

Roddy Collins won't fold Waterford United. If the Waterford United board don't cut their cloth accordingly, it's their fault, not Roddy's. There's no point finger pointing at a manager, because every manager will spend the money they're given.

At Monaghan United, he got them promoted, their attendances in the Premier Division were poor and they didn't secure a shirt sponsor. That's hardly his fault?

At Galway United, we don't blame Tony Cousins for the club folding. He was given inordinate amounts of money to spend by incompetent board members who didn't have the best interests of the club at heart and we employed a criminal as a CEO. We had no supporters representation at board level to stem the tide.

Sometimes Collins big mouth lets him down but he's nowhere near as bad a manager as some people make out. He got Athlone and Monaghan, who were languishing in the first division for years, promoted. I'm sure Waterford United fans will be delighted if he does the same for them.

I agree he won't fold them, but he will damage what is there and remove those willing to help. He's a good man manager, a very unstable individual and alienates more than he allies. If he would just let go of his nonsense and concentrate on coaching, he'd do well and have a strong career, but he's getting more and more paranoid and this will, sadly, not end well.

We're off the back of our worst season ever. So far this season looks as thou its going to be worse this year then last. If you're a Waterford fan you'd know a change was needed as the squad has next to know experience and along with the management team whom has next to no experience at LOI level either. I'm not a fan of Roddy as he talks a fair amount of tripe but he done with Athlone in 2013 or even Monaghagn what were in needed of. He the gave the fans a big boost and got the club after like 17 years or so into the premier which many failed. He gave them a big lift created buzz which we're in need of.

Yes he's been at LOI clubs whom pulled out of the league but the board have to take responsibility for that, a manager can only spend what he's given. For instance Monaghan had a very little fan base and had no main club sponsor which contributed hugely to them pulling out of the league. Waterford have a potential big fan base which has been shown. We managed to get two separate shirt sponsors for our under 19s whom were sponsored by The Woodlands Hotel and the senior team managed to retain the clubs main sponsor of Sports World. And that's off the back of our worst season in our history.

Roddy's got a lot of experience done well in the first division. We can't get any worse giving we're bottom. We were going nowhere under our previous regime which has the fans feeling very disappointed. So the club went and took a risk but it's already giving us a buzz which we haven't had in years.

Roddy's been on talking about Waterford on Newstalk, RTE, Beat FM (yesterday) and been on WLR (The last two days). He's got the place talking about the club again. The publicity already been created by him and he's only in the job one day. Two of the country's main national tabloids have a story about Waterford and Roddy today also. Not many others if anyone would would get the club that much publicity.

I see a lot of other clubs fans say things such "Rip Waterford", "Thats the end of Waterford", "Another club for Roddy to ruin". But the club is currently dying a slow death we haven't had a supports bus to our last three away games which is the first time in a couple of years that has happened. At least with Roddy he's creating a buzz about the club for a lot of the fans which we wouldn't have if he wasn't our manager. And we'll have a bus heading to Shels next week.

As well as that it's been said Roddys salary is been paid by people outside the club so it won't affect the club. It's the first time since Henderson was manager we've had a manager managing the team. And that's four years. As well as anything else we've like 30 players in our squad some of which play no football what's so ever and there's some just aren't good enough. No matter who the manager was I see us releasing players during the summer either way. At least with Roddy he'll bring in a couple of experienced heads into the team which we've needed with the last couple of years.

And Tommy Griffin previous manager has been given a new contract of two and a half years with a new role as head of footballing operations. Whom will be on the management and will watch over the two underage teams.

The appointment will either finish us off or it'll be the makings of Waterford United Football Club. I'm thinking positively however.

Interesting times ahead for the club.

He did nothing to alienate anyone at Mons, in fact he brought the people working there closer together at the time as he was so enthusiastic and that was infectious. We finally had confidence that we could get promoted after the fiasco the year before. When we started his second season with us we were so optimistic. We all worked hard together and it was a lack of sponsors despite the club's and Roddy's best efforts that resulted in us leaving the league. We were no longer sustainable. Roddy did everything in his power to get us sponsorship, to try get the players to play for less and even suggested trying to get them to play for free til the end of season, but our committee didn't think that was the right thing to do.

In Roddy you have gotten a fantastic manager who knows how to get the best out of players by cutting down divas and making them work hard, you have a vocal person who has the ear of the media and will get you publicity money can't buy. I think this will be a major turning point for you and as long as you can maintain sponsors, you will be on the up.

Should have made up for lack of shirt sponsor. The Harps lads masks could be donated and ironed on to the jersey!

Magic, I understand where you're coming from and know what you went through. Yet from the benefit of time and actually reacting in time the situation was the same with Mons as it was with any other club Roddy was at. And I will preface this by saying he is a good man manager (to those he likes) and full of surface enthusiasm. Yet he drives more people away than he does in. For the success (real) that Monaghan had and the progress (real) that Monaghan were making, Roddy was not the man to drive money and sponsors towards the club as much of what he speaks is bluff and he's shown this time and again. I made the joke (which was slagged off here nicely by Dodge I think) that my other half said "This won't last" as soon as I told her of Roddy's Monaghan job. Roddy, sadly, has neither the emotional stability or confidence to make something work for more than a quick fix, and it is unfortunate.

I genuinely hope that he can find peace and finally finish the job he began on his career in Bohs.

I'm pretty sure Robert Birdsall (who's become a bit of a cult hero amongst a small section of the Harps faithful) has already claimed one.

We can thank Paul Cook. He got Roddy together with the Waterford officials according to the great mans interview on Newstalk.

Paul Cooke. Different fella, our FAI rep for a long time, MD of The Star up to a few years ago.

Anyway, on mature reflection and all that, have decided to jump on board and enjoy the spin. My better half has for the last few years always said that the club is better than any soap. Let's hope this isn't the start of the Christmas Day episode!

We have one major advantage over some of the clubs Roddy has ruined....we have NO money! We just aren't in a position to speculate to accumulate. He'll be able to get a few players in but nothing ridiculous. We got more media coverage in the past week than we have in the last two years combined! Bigger crowd tonight, buzz around the place, players were livelier. We're still rubbish, but so is every other team in the division.

Will he be replaced by Owen Heary? Roddy is a much better media performer I would say.
