To me he’s a lad that got way too far ahead of himself, likely with his agent whispering in his ear. He has been substandard since the start of the 2020, coinciding with his reluctance to sign an extended contract and some loose rumors of premier league interest. He’s far better off trying to establish himself firmly in the championship for a longer period, improve his woeful defensive skills, and then see what opportunities arise in a couple of years.
From the 8 or 9 QPR games I watched him in, he’d get swallowed alive at a higher level at the current time

You might be right but this is a lad who stayed in Ireland until he was 18 to do his leaving cert and got 550 points while he was at it. I'm sure there are legitimate reasons for this. Maybe the money at QPR compares poorly to other clubs. Maybe he fancies nailing down centre midfield as his long term position. Leaving QPR is hardly career suicide. Blackburn have been.the most recent link.

Agree leaving QPR is not suicide and QPR are having financial issues so he may see his future elsewhere. But he’s let the whole thing affect his career as he was finally developing and playing well. He has been a different player since January, and has been in and out of the team, and now looks to be frozen out completely. His desire to engineer a move out from QPR seemed a bit premature

But I don't think we know when it went from 'negotiating a new contract' to 'engineering a move out'.

As per Sky Sports, QPR have accepted an offer from Swansea for Manning.
It would be great to see him back playing again.

That's a good move. Up the table. Progressive manager.
One thing to note is that Swansea play wing backs. So it's conceivable and likely that he's being signed to play left wing back. It's fine for him at a club level as many sides are playing with wing backs, even the England national team is. However, it's unlikely Kenny will go down that route. We have Doherty and Stevens who have played a lot of football at wing back as our international full backs. However, both started out as full backs before moving in wing back- Manning started out as a winger or central midfielder before moving in there. I can't see him pushing Stevens for the full back spot in the national team.
If he were to get games midfield and do well then he'd be quite close to a squad place given he is a leftie too.

The hope would be that he can develop the defensive side of his game over time. At present it's not good enough. But I don't think he'll ever break into the Ireland team on the left of a front three position and I don't know that he works as part of a midfield three either. Hopefully playing in a slightly better team will help him to develop that side of his game and he can become an option for us over time as we don't have a natural backup for Stevens at the moment.

It's a real pity the career-path Manning has undergone. He was a regular and really excelling at QPR and has been reduced to a rarely-used squad player at Swansea.
It'll be very difficult for anyone to justify his inclusion in any future squad given his lack of game-time over the previous 12 months.

He's played 8/14 games, in a promotion-chasing, in-form team. Hardly a disaster.

We're so short at left back that he should definitely be included. I don't think left back is his best position and thought he was poor on his international debut but his versatility should get him the nod. He hasn't done too poorly at Swansea by all accounts.

If everyone were fit, I'd imagine after Stevens, it'd be one of Doherty and Coleman, whichever isn't playing on the right, followed by Robbie Brady or Derrick Williams or Dara O'Shea, then followed by Manning and then Cyrus Christie.
Think he'd probably make my current squad with the injuries, combination of injuries at left back, centre back and centre mid, which all take depth away...
When he played against Bulgaria, both Doherty (covid) and Coleman (injured) missed out, meaning O'Shea played right back. Stevens missed out due to injury, as did Williams. With Hendrick (suspended), Molumby (suspended?), McCarthy (bereavement), Arter (injured), Browne (covid?) missing from centre midfield, Brady was playing there... Anyway, hard to imagine we could be as badly hit this time around...

Williams was making the squad while in and out of a Blackburn side that were performing well below Swansea's level (and he had his injury problems which contributed to that.) It's good O'Shea has shown himself to be an option but it's not unlikely he will be playing at a lower level than Manning in a few months.

Sure. Hard to know what his best position is. I've seen him play centre-midfield more than any other position. Have also seen him play on the wing I think. Reports on him and full back and wing back have been both very positive and somewhat mixed. Thought he didn't have a great game against Bulgaria though.
Have seen so little of the championship since lockdown started, probably because premier league games have been much more spread out and they're all on tv during the week, as opposed to the usual 4/5/6 you used to get...

Gaby Heinze and Nelson Vivas played there and they are small yet mobile players, usually fullbacks, of course alongside a LIBERO or sweeper like Joe Chamot, Mauricio Pochettino or Robbie Ayala,
Anyway for me Manning is a flair player, to play him there is at his manager fault, because he is a lousy defender but a great footballer.
Great footballers can play everywhere with practise, for me Manning is a midfielder could be a anywhere in midfield, better as a left mid or as a number 10. as a defender it is a waste of talent

Yeah, he has been centre half and had a very good game from what I can tell. Stepped up lovely at one stage for Bristol City to think they had got in behind for a chance.

Woeful first touch and subsequent lunge for a yellow aside, he did ok. But here, its a **** standard of football on view tonight. Typical helter skelter English fare. Good preparation for the international team right enough.

That's disappointing as we're relatively stacked at centre half. I'd be much happier seeing him excel at full or wing back.

No harm that he improves his defensive abilities at the centre of the defence is the only thing. He might become a better full or wing back.

yes he is a midfielder for me, somewhere in midfield should be good, not a left back at all in my view, its odd that they played him as a Libero in a back 3

Shades of Stephen Ward about him, starting out as an attacker before ending up in defence.
Never in a million years would have guessed he'd have ended up playing centre half when he first came on the scene.

Lovely lovely assist for Swansea second, it was a máster pass from a #10. A Liam Brady kind of special delivery, ditto this.... He was dribbled pasa by Long with ease in a one on one for the equalizer and then couldnt block the killer pasa to Shane for the final punch out

What a goal he scored. A beauty!!!
Another lovely goal today. Ball broke from Okoflex and he hit it just outside the left side of the box with his left foot to the right side of the goal.
We might need a “Swansea Irish and Opposition Irish” thread :D
Kenny can't keep ignoring Manning. Highest rated Irish player according to Whoscored and Swansea fans are talking about him being their best player so far this season.
Out of contract next summer when he turns 27. Won't be short of offers next year and should get himself a good move with the contract to match it.
1588987094869094400
On his way out of Swansea at the end of the year according to Martin Russell, won’t be signing a new contract. Where does he go? Is he someone who moves to the Premier League now, via a Burnley or similar or is it more of a lateral move and he stays in the division? Goes abroad?
He shows up on the WS Championship Team of the Season so far.
The correct decision by Manning. He'll be 27 in the summer and probably his last chance to get a decent contract.
Could see him at Sheffield United if they didn't have a transfer embargo though they might have that sorted by the summer. Burnley probably have their sights set on signing Maatsen whose on loan and Charlie Taylor still has a year on his contract. Teams that are up around the play offs pushing for promotion are probably his level.

This has a bit of a West Brom/Middlesbrough feel to it alright. He's free so will get himself a decent wage. But EPL teams don't tend to bother with free transfers from the Championship, even when they're potentially good enough for that level, as we saw with Darragh Lenihan - who was excellent for Blackburn, is now excellent for Middlesbrough, but didn't get a Premier League move last summer and probably still wouldn't if he was available on a free this summer.
So a Championship team with realistic promotion prospects seems his best bet here. QPR to Swansea was a bit of a sideways move for him a few years ago, so hopefully he gets something better than that.
Another one for Manning this season. (apparently took a deflection off him v anything too delightful)
A lot of headaches (good ones) for Kenny coming up to this window. Will be interesting to see if he brings in some deserving names or if he sticks.

Watching Swansea v Huddersfield on iFollow so it's Swansea biased commentators. "We talk about Ryan Manning's quality every week".
They think he's a superb player who can consistently put dangerous balls in the box. Considering how poor our set pieces were against France...

I wonder is the England game haunting him? I think he hasn't had a minute for us since that game. He was shocking in it, but England are unfortunately rather good these days and his league form suggests he's worth another look.
