He hasn't played much recently so I was disappointed on Friday when I saw he got a red. Whilst he's missing games, at least he hasn't let the manager down too much.

highlights from the game are on YouTube, the red card is at 0:57
Really didn't give the ref any option there other than to send him off.

Nice to see Ryan Manning has put QPR 1-0 up away to high-flying Aston Villa. Badly wanted confidence booster.

Great stuff. He appears to be a confidence player so if he can get a full season and a full run in the team under his belt it will help his career hugely.
It was an ironic night for him. QPR were beaten by Bristol City at home to leave them rooted at the bottom with no points from 4 games. He’s got a young and bright manager in a Paul Warne over him and Rotherham are on an upward trajectory. Contrast that to the very QPR appointment of Steve McClaren who hasn’t had a good season in a while, and nor have QPR really. He’s a lucky boy.
Rotherham are also trying to bring Richie Towell back on loan.

Scored a late penalty to equalise against Bristol City and then scored in the shoot-out. He seems to have re-established himself at QPR this season and really should be considered as much of an option as any of the other Championship midfielders under 25: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/49245333

Seems to be playing as a wing back just like Stevens is. Certainly comfortable on the ball, his positional play might need some work though.

Looks like Manning is progressing nicely at QPR. Learning his trade and only 23, but could definitely be a viable option at left back in a year’s time...

Was having a look through QPR forum to see if they were discussing anything about Masterson. Realized how highly they rate Manning. Since converting to left wing back by Warburton, he has been their player of the season so far, topping a number of their team stats charts. It’s getting interesting. His contract expires next summer, he has an option to extend it by one year. Southampton and Newcastle both allegedly sniffing around for January moves. Admittedly, I’ve never seen him play but worth monitoring closely. Certainly should have been in Micks squad by now, considering his bizarre Hourihane LB experiment, and Dohertys subpar performance at LB today. Some ultra reliable resources referenced below:

I think the timelines were against him, as they have been for a number of Mick's potential options (which is why I feel some of the criticism directed at Mick for his selections have been unfair). At the start of September, Stevens was the obvious #1 leftback, with Cunningham as back-up, with a couple of makeshift options available (Manning would have been a makeshift option himself, having only just started playing left-back). And even Doherty, on paper, would have been a much more obvious option in the run-up to today's game (experienced Premier League full-back, who has played on both right and left vs young Championship midfield player, who has only recently moved into defence). Based on this I was initially going to say that it's too late for Manning to feature under Mick but, with Cunningham out now, I guess there is the possibility of a squad call-up in November as back-up to Stevens (although Derrick Williams might still be just ahead in the pecking-order). Also, if he continues his upward trajectory, he could be called up for whatever games we are playing in the Spring - more likely if we do somehow get the victory we need to qualify without the Nations League playoffs and are playing friendlies to build up to the Finals.

Manning is talented but would be best served trying to find a club that play him in a more central midfield position as defensively he is too dodgy to be a good Premiership left back IMO.

It's funny, he was an out and out winger in his LOI days, and a dangerous one at that. I never saw him becoming a central player at all. The modern wing back suits him, as it's not so much about defensive capabilities anymore, as it is about getting up and down the wing in a support role and chipping in with a few goals.

He is too slow, and gets caught out of position, it would be like watching Ian Harte all over again, without the free kick ability or set piece delivery.

Nice goal. Similar to weekend, finish to corner outside the area.
Robinson with the second, and Manning showing why he can’t be trusted as an international full back. He had at least 6 seconds to position himself goal side of Robinson when Barbet got dragged over. Instead he stands off and looks for offside. I’m with POS on this one having watched him a good bit pre covid. It does appear his head was turned with the mention of a couple of prem clubs, and he got ahead of himself. Needs to work a lot harder on defensive side to put himself in contention for an Irish berth.
Still though, he’s ahead of Ryan Burke (for now!)

Is he a long term wing back or left back? Or will he play himself into left or middle of midfield?

On a side note, our other left back in this game O’Shea just caught out badly with a ball over the top, incredible finish by Eze, worth the watch. Up to now O’Shea has been pretty solid

He’s playing left back in flat back 4 today. But he’s looked best left wing back (with left centre back covering him) from what I saw. He’s good going forward there’s no doubt. Haven’t seen him play left mid personally, perhaps he has?

It's just if he's not defensively sound enough for left back in a back four then he's very restricted. Not many clubs need a specialist left wing back- not even QPR do sometimes.

He played left mid when he broke through initially. Particularly at QPR, he was left of a midfield three. And played closer to the middle at Rotherham. I think he could have been a left winger at Galway but I stand for correction.

Was definitely more of an attacking player at both Mervue and Galway.

Is it me or do we have more players at the top half of the championship now than in a long time? Maybe I'm only noticing more now because they are young and breaking through but the numbers seem greater.

I think our player numbers are steadily increasing across the divisions in the last year or so, after bottoming out just before that.
At the same time a bit disappointing that there is so little Irish involvement in the championship playoffs this year. Only Fulham of the four teams have Irish players in the first team and also Leeds who were promoted have no Irish first team players. So still plenty of room for improvement.

Manning keeps getting linked with a Premier League move. I haven't seen much of him this season but his defensive capabilities keep getting highlighted as being insufficient. His attacking qualities are obviously borne out by his impressive stats. So, I'm not sure if the links are drummed up by representatives. Or if they're genuine and his defensive weaknesses aren't as irreparable as some would have you believe. Or if the clubs linked don't see him as a long term left back.
It's a strange one.
irishfan86
30/07/2020, 2:19 PM
I don't think it's that strange. I think there's always what I'd call "highlight bias."
Players who show up in the highlights for the right reasons (generally offensively) will always attract the interest of clubs on a more regular basis, even though that might not represent the totality of their contribution.
I imagine there are some elite defenders who are slow to rise to higher levels of the game despite their effectiveness, simply because they contribute minimally offensively.
Olé Olé

So you think that Premiership clubs would sign a player based on highlights and would avoid doing the due diligence that a lot of Ireland supporters would, even though it would be they forking out the millions?

They won't make decisions based on highlights. I just believe that offensive contributions more often lead to transfers. There's also a general attitude that defending can be taught, but offensive skill is generally something you have or you don't, which probably plays into that as well.

It's being suggested that Manning may be frozen out by Warburton due to his reluctance to sign a new contract. It would be disappointing if his current rate of progress and career momentum were disrupted in this way - just look at how it affected O'Dowda...

Hard to see how freezing him out will achieve anything other than chase him away from the club. Even if the Premier League interest doesn't materialise there must be quite a few Championship teams that could afford him with just a year left on his contract.

Mowbray on Manning:
Is there anything you can tell us on Ryan Manning?
"No. That's a name you've just thrown at me. It's not true. I think Ryan Manning is a very good footballer, I imagine QPR are not going to let him walk away.
"We haven't got any money to buy anybody. How much is Ryan Manning going to cross(cost?)? If you're going to buy a player, you have to buy the player and then you have to give him a salary.
"I know exactly to the penny how much we've got but it's probably a couple of loans or a signing, I would suggest, and I'm not sure I'd want to spend it all on Ryan Manning when we've got Amari'i Bell doing ok, so there's other areas I feel we need to strengthen first."
