No pike games???

A lot of people don't like to do predictions on their own clubs games.

The following article appears in tonights Limerick Leader. If anyone does facebook you might throw it up?

"With the current season about to kick off and the usual shenanigans of the close season nearly at an end players are preparing for nine months of hard slog ahead.
Every club has it’s share of loyal clubmen who give freely of their time and effort to make it possible for the chosen eleven players to take the field on match day.
How does such dedication and selflessness compare to some of today’s players who are reportedly being financially rewarded by “their clubs” for services rendered?
As long as I have been involved in soccer, rumours of players getting paid have been rife, but what is a taboo subject for a lot of people may not be as black and white an issue as first appears.
The FAI rulebook says that a player may only be paid expenses for travel, hotel etc.
It goes on to say that any player receiving more than justified expenses may lose his amateur status.
That’s where it gets tricky.
Travel expenses? If one were to travel by car, a “fiver” should cover expenses but if one pays a driver to wait around for two hours to drive you home it would increase the cost significantly.
The rule does not stipulate what is not allowed!
Back in the 70’s a famous player transferred to a neighbouring club and despite living a stone’s throw from his new club reportedly benefited from travel expenses.
There was also the famous case in the 80’s where a number of players left Ballynanty to join another club where a red carpet (or whatever colour they chose!) was laid on for them.
The veracity of these and hundreds of other stories has yet to be proven but I have no doubt the majority if not false, were at least greatly exaggerated.
Any player who left one club for another is invariably accused of getting paid because the thoughts that one would prefer to play with another club was less palatable to the jilted party.
A bit like agents talking up their players, some of the current crop of players are well capable of spinning a yarn in the hope that some club would take the bait.
The rumour mill has even spread beyond these shores. Stevie Quane of Weston Villa fame tells a story of collecting the usual €2 from his players after a game. Approaching a new signing with little English, Stevie was taken aback as the debutant made it known that he “would not take any pay this week”.
I am not naive enough to think that no players are getting paid but I think it is a very small number.
Granted it is breaking the rules of the game and the usual argument from the clubs partaking in such practices is that the big clubs in Dublin are doing it, so to compete you must do the same.
Obviously that argument is flawed but some of these people have convinced themselves this is true.
I would not blame the players who benefit, as some of these lads may have families and be out of work so if any club is silly enough to pay up, then why look a gift horse in the mouth.
It is a short sighted practice that might bring short term success to a club but will be at a price much greater than the monetary cost.
A payment to some players is surely an insult to any others not being similarly rewarded.
Good players will come and go but good clubmen are the real prize"

Back in the day it was going on.in your own club by the way as you well know.hopefully the 12 lads will get the recognition they deserve. if your going to do a profile on the clubs.do your homework properly. Over and out.

Great article this and especially the last line "Good players will come and go but good clubmen are the real prize"...this really sums it up. Pity players wouldn't remain loyal to their clubs. The majority of the so called talented players signing with 2 or 3 clubs leaving their original clubs to battle relegation and an uncertain future. The leagues would be much more competitive (and more entertaining) if players remained loyal to their clubs similar to the GAA.

surely janesboro should have got a walkover?while nobody wants to see teams in trouble its hardly boro,s problem.if boro or others have similar troubles during the season will they be shown the same courtesy?clubs especially premier clubs should surely have their house in order before seasons kickoff after all you have 2-3 months from seasons end to organise and this club cannot get eleven on the pitch for the start, not a good advert for the league.

Pike Rovers 8-0 Fairview

Fairview made a rod for their own backs in this one with their starting shape. They set out in a 5-3-2, which was totally inappropriate in looking to deal with Pike's new look 4-2-3-1 shape. This meant that they had 3 centre backs up against Pike's one striker (Hanrahan), ensuring a deficit in another area of the pitch. That other area was the flanks, where Fairview were continually overloaded owing to the lack of wide midfielders.

Pike have moved on from the rigid 4-4-2 shape of old and are now sensibly building the team around star player John Tierney, who found himself in the role he is most suited to - number 10. Compounding View's shape problems was the fact that he had no direct opponent. View played two holders and a number 10, in the form of Bradley, Mullane and McNamara respectively. It would have made much more sense to field an anchorman with specific instructions to track Tierney, particularly as McNamara had little or no impact on the game in his position behind the strikers and was withdrawn soon after half time.

The first goal developed as a result of this problem. Mangan came way out of his centre back position to unsuccessfully challenge Tierney. The defence shifted left to adjust, thus leaving Pike left winger Dunisha free to convert Tierney's weighted pass after 15 minutes.

The next goal occurred just three minutes later due to the deficit on the flanks. Hanrahan had drifted to the right and was allowed to cross under no pressure. Dunisha headed in his second at the back post.

The third was totally avoidable. Tierney muscled Mangan off it in the box. Neither of the other two centre backs were in a covering position, allowing the Pike player to lift it over goalkeeper Ronan Power.

The fourth came from an overload on the right again. John Boyle was the man who applied the finishing touch this time around.

And again the fifth stemmed from the right flank. This time young right full McCormack was totally free to deliver his cross. Hanrahan with the header. Left wing back Mullins was dragged in again by Pike right winger Ryan's movement inside.

So it was 5-0 at the halfway mark. I decided to stick around for 5-10 minutes to see if Finnan would change anything. Shockingly however, the away side emerged for the second half with the same shape. They removed attacking midfielder McNamara after about 50 minutes for Shane Power, who seemed to be unsure of his positioning, playing in similar areas to the Fairview right wing back. If it was a lopsided shape that was intended, surely it was the other flank where reinforcements were most required. At any rate, it made little difference. Soon after the change Dunisha got in behind on that side and squared it, where it was turned into an empty net by one of Fairview's three centre backs as he challenged for the ball. I left at that point to watch the Ireland match.

A few themes here:

1. 5-3-2 vs 4-2-3-1 means 3 v 1 at the back and a deficit elsewhere. In this case, the flanks.
2. View's midfield triangle should have been flipped, with an anchorman at the base to counter Tierney.
3. Pike look transformed already from last season, with a far more fluid shape. Their defensive shape was also excellent today with both Boyle and Hartnett screening the defence extremely well. The threat in wide areas was varied, with Ryan coming narrow and Dunisha playing wider on the other side. Basically a far more modern approach than we're used to from the Hoops.
4. Mistakes will always happen as a coach, but not accepting them and changing things, particularly when the problems are so glaring, is unforgiveable.

early days yet but the way its looking boro will have to beat pikeprob twice plus drop no more points thats 5pts dropped in only 4 games and when you think they got a undeserved 95th min winner against carew who has 10 men from 20mins into the game could of been alot worse.
i do agree they have a fantastic team/squad should be doing alot better.
