It's a shocking miss, Valencia has pretty much an open goal but directs it to where Randolph is standing. It should still probably go it but Randolph drags it back from the line very impressively. Shades of Seaman against Sheffield United years ago maybe but need to see it another few times, probably not that good.

Obviously Randolph had anticipated the direction of the shot and was already in place, thereby making the impossible possible.

I think Randolph was expecting that to be ruled offside.

How about that Ibrahimovic though?

I thought the goals were supposed to magically dry up once he moved to the Premier League, because the Premier League is so superior to all the other leagues he played in.

Not really, in fact the more I see it the more I think it's a shocking miss more than a brilliant save. He gets a strong hand and fair play to him for keeping it out but not as brilliant as I thought initially. He made an absolute mess of a Rashford shot a few minutes ago but the post saved him (twice I think!). That harsh enough for you Stu? :)

Ibra is unreal quality. Anyone who wasn't stupid knew that his quality would translate although his age was, for me, the only potential barrier I could see and obviously it hasn't been as I don't know of any other player since our own Paul McGrath that can conserve energy on the pitch like Ibra.

That goal was offside though.

I dunno DeL. He just pulled a quality stop out of the bag there again... (the first was a quality save even just for the fact that he didn't give up).

I bet you're really mad at the post... :P

Did I say that? Presumably in comparing him to Westwood?

I said his save at Anfield was brilliant, and despit Geysir playing it down a little I stand by that. I haven't seen the much lauded save at Old Trafford.

I'm with Delores on this one though, very good save but unbelievably bad miss. Much more about the miss than the save. It was a bit (note: a bit) like Sinclair's winner in the recent OF game, where he gave the keeper a half chance to save a shot he shouldn't have even given a chance to get a touch on.

You said something along the lines that he makes the saves you'd expect a goalkeeper to make but no more, but he's a good steady presence. At least I hope it was you, otherwise I'm on the hook for a defamation suit.

Also had one near-howler in the second, ball slipped under him and came back off the post, hit his back but luckily didn't creep over the line. Another fine save from Herrera near the end though.

I said Randolph made an excellent save at Old Trafford. I just explained imo how he made the save possible by his deliberate good positioning.

On last night's talking point save, I'd say seeing as the ball was traveling at thunderbolt speed, was certifiably halfway across the goal line before Randolph got his outstretch left paw onto it, I'd put the save alongside Randolph's greats (an expanding list).
Also he made a very good foot stop late on in the game from a player (Herrera?) clean through on goal.

In a reversal of last season, Adrian was given the chance to impress in the FA Cup against Man City...didn't quite work out for him the same as for Randolph, so I think Darren's status as our first-choice Premier League 'keeper is fairly solid for now anyway. http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/38465098

I haven't seen highlights yet but regardless of how he played it's pretty certain that West Ham have stabilised at the back, allowing them to now win games, since he has been in the team. Obviously ignoring games against Man City! I think if you micro-analyse his game you can find fault maybe a little more than you'd like to, but overall a keeper's longer term impact on a team is to provide solid base and he is doing that and more at WHAM, and has also done it for us. When he lines out on March 24th it'll be the first time he has played for us as an established EPL keeper with regular game time. Augurs well.

Read through the live updates and two specific finger-tip saves were called out. Looks like he's getting very confident. Conceded, but it was a hard deflection.

I don't think it was a deflection - Gabbiadini just leathered it in off the bar from 10 yards. It was as close to unstoppable as a shot gets.

Randolph looked a bit lost for West Ham unfortunately. One through the legs happens but he got utterly lost under the corner that led to WBAs equaliser.

Yeah I wouldn't blame him for the first goal at all but he was all over the shop for the equaliser. For a guy who specialises in dealing with crosses he's made a mess of quite a few.

He seems to have a problem judging the crosses ending up in no mans land. He is consistent.

Goalkeepers have to spread themselves to narrow the angle so it's a bit of a catch 22. The defender was the bigger culprit for that goal, he was really 'done'.

Good news for Randolph's longer-term first-team prospects at West Ham as Slaven Bilić has dismissed speculation that he's keen to bring in another goalkeeper: http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/slaven-bilic-says-antonio-conte-has-transformed-chelsea-players-into-superheroes-but-west-ham-boss-a3482426.html

We have been linked with many players in the last three transfer windows, including Chelsea goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

In those three windows, though, I have said a few times that the only position in the team I have absolutely no interest in discussing is the goalkeeping spot.

I was happy — and I am still happy — with Adrian and Darren Randolph.

If you ask me whether they will both still be here next season, I would say yes.

You can never be 100 per cent certain in football, of course, and maybe one of them will knock on the door and say he is unhappy but even if that happens, I will try to persuade them to stay at the club.

Shocking penalty to the extent that it was so poorly placed that Randolph essentially smothered it in his belly and so tamely hit that he was well able to hold on.

2 sh!te penalties for Bournemouth.

You could tickle Randolph with a feather and he wouldn't so much as crease his brow.

10) West Ham can’t afford many more of Bilic’s ‘mistakes’ Anticipating that Leicester City would still be tired from their midweek exertions against Sevilla, Slaven Bilic asked his players for a fast start. Instead West Ham United (https://www.theguardian.com/football/westhamunited) gave away three cheap goals inside the first 38 minutes. Despite a dramatic late push for an equaliser, West Ham paid for their early, inexplicable doziness. They are winless in their past five matches and although they are nine points above the bottom three, their form is deeply concerning. West Ham are lacking in pace and creativity on the ball and intensity and aggression out of possession, and have forgotten how to defend. Darren Randolph does not convince in goal and there is a shortage of basic organisation throughout the entire 11. “Mistakes happen,” Bilic said. They are happening a lot. West Ham have conceded 52 goals in 29 matches, a record that raises questions about Bilic’s future. Jacob Steinberg

I was disappointed in Randolph for the first goal. I hate seeing a keeper get deceived by an inswinger that misses everyone. One of my yardsticks is how keepers deal with these. I'd rather a keeper gets beaten by a header than by failing to anticipate no contact.

If Bale was watching MOTD he'd have been licking his lips.

Cool, calm, collected.

What's Darren Randolph thinking there? He bizarrely chooses to try and dribble Byram's pass out of the area with Markovic closing in. He is almost dispossessed but when he lunges in to reclaim the ball after he spots Hernandez, Hull fans cry out for a penalty! Not given though...

Nightmare afternoon for Randolph on the two Sunderland goals. He was clearly being obstructed for the first and should have had a free out in my opinion but was caught in no mans land for their equalizer. Only saw it once and thought perhaps there was a foul there too but can't say until I see it again.

Also, as a goalkeeper especially, who has a weaker/poorer team or defence in front of him relative to the strength/performance of other defences or teams in the league, he'll inevitably end up in a higher number of situations, compared to other players and goalkeepers, where errors may arise and where these errors may lead to the concession of goals.

I don't know Danny,
I've watched Swansea a fair few times and it's safe to say their defence is porous, some atrociously poor defending, yet Fabianski consistently puts in good performances, makes the absolute peach of a save on a regular basis, if he's at fault for some poor keeping decision, it's because he makes the occasional error, not his defence exposing him.

I haven't seen Darren's goalkeeping mistakes, afair he showed early promise this season in the West Ham goal, but the errors were always there, costly errors and they have accumulated.
Randolph and Adrian are two reserve keepers.

Stuttgart88
16/04/2017, 12:56 PM
I think it's easier to look good as a keeper in a team that concedes chances. The real test is how well a keeper does in a good team. Fabianski is a good example, though I think he's good enough now to play in a good team. He looks too good for Swansea but never looked good enough for Arsenal. Your mistakes are often more critical for a big team who is expected to win far more often. A team that's at the bottom is there for more reasons than a less than totally reliable keeper.

I think Randolph still looks nervous at West Ham in a way he doesn't look for us. I think he feels under pressure at club level knowing that fans and maybe teammates don't wholly trust him. When he plays for us he feels in charge and is more relaxed.

I frequently used to play for both our Saturday AUL team and our Sunday LSL team. Even though I was the regular keeper for the Sunday team I tended to play better when standing in for the Saturday team because the coach really liked me and I knew he trusted me whereas my Sunday captain was always looking for an excuse to criticise. I think Ireland is Randolph's Saturday team in that regard.

geysir

The thing is Stutts, Fabianski was in and out at Arsenal, make a mistake then you're out, back in again when the nr 1 keeper has a dodgy spell. When he went to Swansea he was their nr 1, week in out, regardless of the keeper errors, his confidence grew as a result and this reflected in his increasing goalkeeping prowess.
Unlike Fabianski at Arsenal, our Darren has been given a really good stretch of games this season to prove his worth in the heat of the epl, that's a vote of confidence from the manager. The odds are this is his last season at nr1 in the epl.
