I don't understand the exclusion of Tralee and Cobh if they meet the requirements. Doesn't make any sense to me and seems harsh on the two clubs.

I guess it does cut our travel a fair bit though!

What a joke.

Only 28 games, many of which will be meaningless for many clubs.

Second and third play a promotion playoff in a division with only eight teams.

Cobh and Tralee will only be considered if one of these eight fail licensing.

I'm bored already, and the season hasn't even started and I actually like the LoI. Imagine what non-believers would make of it. Not that they're watching.

It's a backward move if the league is retuning to being a closed league. If the clubs that were looking to join don't meet the standard we can't have complaints. 4 series mightn't be ideal but it seems to be the only option.

26/01/2012, 11:47 AM
I think the bad thing about excluding the likes of carlow tralee and cobh etc is that there is no A division. So by not getting into the 1st division they now have no league to play in????? a quick fix reserve league needs to be sorted now maybe an under 23 reserve league ??

Mr A

It's a question which could be asked of the clubs themselves. If Carlow, Cobh and Tralee's long term ambition is to join the league but their not ready on in a position to do so, it should be down to them to work together first and the the FAI on a workable solution with reserve teams if at all remotely possible.

I think it just makes sense to have a Galway based team playing in the decent, centralish ground. All the better for attracting in potential support and what not. If they don't run themselves into the ground like the last lot so much the better obviously.

Absolutely agree. A season of tediousness awaits. Already the gloss has been taken off what I was hoping would be a leisurely stroll to the title this season...

It makes no sense to exclude Cobh and Tralee either particularly as the promotion/relegation setup would suggest that we won't be rushing headlong into a 16 team premier/0 team first next season. Delaney and his fellow dregs are some shower alright...

Also, tbf, they are from the area of Galway so it's a long way from SD Barcelona. Cynical ploy? Absolutely. Hardly ridiculous though, why shouldn't they aspire to being representative off a larger area

Yeah I agree - as a Galway United fan I feel somewhat hard done by this season but can only imagine what those at Tralee and Cobh think. It seemed as if they were shoe-ins to get in with no A-Championship to compete in next year but what do they do now? It must feel like the last 3 or 4 years in the A-Championship striving for a League of Ireland place was all a total waste. It would be interesting to hear where they fell down and what the lower teams in Division 1 have that these clubs don't.

Edit: Also as my better half is from near to Tralee they were going to be the team I supported for this season. Do I need 2 petrol canisters?!

Mr A
26/01/2012, 12:37 PM
I didn't take from the FAI statement that they had fallen down- they just won't be considered unless somebody drops out. I can't understand the logic behind that at all.

It says the fixtures are out but I don't see them there as yet.

Hmm, that release tells precisely nothing about why Cobh or Tralee were excluded - as Legendz says, there would be no complaints if they failed the licensing criteria, but when it goes on to say that the process hasn't been completed yet, things don't add up. Galway had five days to appeal after they were put in the A Championship, if I remember correctly, so looks like that and lobbying the clubs are their only two options. As things stand, once the U-19 season ends, they're only left with the KDL and MSL respectively.

bennocelt
26/01/2012, 12:43 PM
KDL and MSL, so will they be allowed to take part in the league cup like last season, hardly. And what about the FAI cup, what level will they come in at......? Jeez what a mess

El-Pietro
26/01/2012, 12:59 PM
Cobh definitely owe players money. They haven't attempted to contact at least two of those players - though as was mentioned they haven't even begun the licensing review process. strange

adamd164
26/01/2012, 1:23 PM
Utterly bizarre, it would be understandable if Cobh and Tralee simply hadn't met the licensing requirements, but willingly going for an 8 team league and excluding the two of them is a shocking decision by the FAI.

Who are they trying to fool with this SD Galway malarky on the fixture list anyway... what a shambles.

Interesting theory by a Galway fan that actually seems like a plausible reason why the FAI are insisting on 8 teams:

There is a good chance that this was another obstacle put in the way to ensure that we did not get a licence this year. As it has already been mentioned there is a precedent set that a late application was accepted before by the fai. So if we had taken legal action it is likely the fai would have just said its an 8 team league so you still cant join. If they let the other clubs in then they would have to let us in as well.

From what I've seen/heard the clubs haven't lobbied for much. Some see calls for an interim league as foolish but the status quo doesn't always have to be accepted, otherwise things would never change.

I have it on good authority that if there was 10 teams in the FD this year, there was only going to be three rounds of fixtures, so that would only have meant 27 games for each team.

While playing everyone four times is a bit much, it does at least mean there is a 'fairness' with equal number of home and away games.

From what you are saying Tralee should be very, very ****ed off if they are not accepted in.

Can Tralee financially support a LOI team for the coming season? If the answer is yes then they should be allowed in to compete. If not then it is not a risk worth taking for Tralee Dynamos if you ask me. Not yet anyway.

Agree Tralee should be allowed in, Fai seem to be making it up as they go along it seems. I wonder did Fai Put pressure on Carlow to withdraw? they seemed that they would get a licence, then using Buckley park became an issue and it went all quite from them.

Fai should have planned for 12 team league ( if cobh & Gust) didn't get licence, then have a 10 team league, having a 8 team league is madness

I wonder did Fai consider a 20 team premier rather than having a 12 team & 8 team league?

Surely it could have been set as a ten team first division including Cobh and Tralee in the provisional situation. Then if they fail to get a licence, they dont take part. Setting it as a 8 team league maximum is just plain stupid. Money, time and resources wasted by those clubs.
